Hi guys,
So recently i bought a used Alienware 15 R3 2017 model like new for 1000 euro. I was wondering if buying a extended warranty on it is worth it ?
DELL said it's 750 euro for 3 years Premium Support and onsite.
But I've been reluctant to purchase it as there isn't much feedback about it other than negative feedback and any positive feedback is towards the premium plus warranty.
I know Dell laptops are usually literal tanks but not always.
The laptop specs are:
i7 7820hk
gtx 1070 8gb
16gb 2400mhz ram
120hz fhd display
256gb m.2 ssd
1tb hdd

I would definitely recommend it as they are fantastic for their support. However, don't take first offer. Some people have received it for dirt cheap (check on here and reddit) so keep strong and you can get a good deal on the warranty.

No, just get 1 year accidental damage. You can buy/extend the normal 1 year warranty to premium at any time if you wish. Just keep extending accidental damage thoughVasudev and VERGEPROPCBUILDER like this. -
There's a waiting period between purchasing aftersales warranty extension and being able to claim btw.Vasudev, VERGEPROPCBUILDER and Vistar Shook like this.

I'll call them and ask, the original warranty ended just this august. I guess you cant trust what they tell you because they haven't replied to any questions and keep pushing dell premium support on meVasudev likes this.

That math doesnt sound reasonable to me. 1000 Euro for the laptop and another 750 in case something goes wrong? I would save the money towards another laptop. Unless it catches fire it will always have some resale value to someone to add to the 750 you already have. High performance laptops are getting cheaper all the time. Sure they dont have aluminum and carbon fiber but who cares. Its the hardware I care most about. All these things become obsolete so damn fast. Why commit to old technology?
I will agree 100% that Dell warranty is fantastic. If the laptop is working good then dont take it apart and mess with it unless your good at that type of thing. Also dont let anyone spill any liquids on it.Vasudev and VERGEPROPCBUILDER like this. -
I repasted it because the owner did bad repaste job. One core was hitting 85-88° degrees and above while the rest were hitting about 76°-78° degrees , its in like new condition I bought it used the original warranty ended in August 2018, and if I want to buy a similar spec machine it would probably cost me around 1700 euro here used . So I want to protect my investment I guess. But im really doubtful of it's life expectancy even with the care and maintenance. I've been hearing the Alienware 15 r3's get mobo failures often luckily not as often as the skylake model but still makes me nervous. Its running perfect ,no errors in diagnostics, no issues whatsoever even with heavy load. It was power limit throttling so i changed it in my bios mode to Performance mode now it does not power limit throttle when running a heavy load and I run my laptop at stock clocks in performance mode. I play a bit and my temps never exceed 80 degrees. I maybe might sell it and make profit then buy a brand new laptop with the 750 on top. I've been taking apart laptops and desktops since i was 10 built my first desktop when I was 11. -
Sell it before it starts giving you more problems. Without a warranty its damn expensive to replace parts.
Maybe its worth looking at Overpowered Laptops from Walmart which carry 2 year warranty. -
I live in Ireland we don't have Walmart, Bestbuy, target or any of those stores here we litrally went mad when we got a Krispy kremes that opened up a few months ago. Also many places here sell overpriced tech you find very little of deals other than Amazon UK every blue moon

I assumed you were from USA.
Even here they sell overpriced junk too.VERGEPROPCBUILDER likes this. -
Why expect it is going to give problems? Mine is running flawless for a year now.
-
Not as overpriced as here, here parts usually cost more here than usa and usually by a lot its rediculous you can pay 100+ moee for the same
Mine also seens to run flawless also im hoping it lasts me a very long time only thing i had with it was in beginning after restarting pc attet a update or driver install i got a bios message saying my ram capacity has changed but after a bios update its gone it didnt do anything but irritate me anyways. -
Usually you upgrade to new AW every year and a half after checking the forums for thermal issues and other problems.
-
My previous one I had for 2 years and would have had it longer if I couldnt get the R3. I pass down my laptops to my family members and the only laptop that truly failed after a short time was a Gigabyte gaming laptop. If the thermals are in check, then failure is a small chance.VERGEPROPCBUILDER likes this.

Maybe get a shorter amount of extra warranty. THe thing thats nice of Dell warranty is though if they cant fix it because they lack parts or if they couldnt fix it after 3 tries, you get a new system.VERGEPROPCBUILDER likes this.

Thanks, for the information it really helped relieve any doubts I will maybe go for one year warranty and extend it if needed to. I had a M14x a while ago really loved that laptop, it was such a sturdy tank this alienware feels very reminiscent of that old laptop. I handed it down to my little brother who broke it in just a few months... My temps are very good, I have no throttling fo sorts whatsoever . I re-pasted it, it runs 10 degrees cooler (under 80 degrees when doing intensive things) but the keyboard deck feels warmer is that normal i had the same thing happen with my dell 7559 after repasted it. I think its due to better thermal conductivity

I just realized through this thread that you could extend the warranty for Dell devices including Alienware.... Originally, I thought the warranty that you initially bought with your system could never be changed nor extended.... In my country, most laptops have 1 year Warranty, some even have only 6 months parts and replacement, and after that, it's over. No more extensions :/ At least that is what the local retailers in my nation tell you..... most do not even want to honor warranties even though your system is well within the coverage.. Or, they take the laptop, and state there are no faults even though there are and refuse to give you a replacement if ever they could not fix the problem, either stating it is working as intended or that the user must have done something to it... :/ The consumer always loses in my nation.

I went the opposite route. I figured I was going to trash my 13 R3 due to being a "DULL", but it has proven to be rock-solid. I'm going to expand my upgrade cycle from 2 years with Sagers to 3 years (so this laptop still has a bit of time left) and then see what's out there. Even with a 1060, it's plenty capable of business tasks for a LONG time. I already extended warranty once, can I extend again?

Oh, that is a very good question and I also would like to know the answer to it. How many extensions could you make with the DELL Premium Warranty? Could I extend it on a yearly basis, or would they stop me at my second attempt to extend the warranty? Also, what are the prices of such extensions?ganzonomy likes this.
