I'm not 100% sure but I presume the touch screen on both the AW15 & 17 are glass (gorilla?). Any way I also presumed they might be susceptible to cracks being such large pieces of glass. If that happens does the standard warranty cover it or do I need accidental damage cover?

Honestly, I wouldn't trust them to rule it under regular warranty. I bet they'd try to claim it was your fault and not a "regular use" type of damage.

Laptop screens not just 'break' by themselves. At my work, we support over 700+ HP laptops with glossy panels and the only times, I've seen 'cracked' screens are when the laptops were misused/abused or stepped on, etc.
I owned the ancient HP HDX18 for 2 yrs plus and after a nasty water spill, the screen was still intact which I sold for $300 for parts. -
I wouldn't have asked if it was a normal glossy screen. This is like a smartphone glass screen except it's much bigger. So for example, if one was to drop the laptop from a small distance like 1 inch it's could still crack the screen. Also if one is travelling and it gets pressured slightly.
I'm sure the default non glass screens will be fine with the above scenarios. -
The glass is the main culprit for those mirror-like reflections. I wish they would have steered clear of touch options, for the 4k. I might have bit on a glossy without the glass overlay. My Alienware 18 has a glossy screen, and without the glass it only has minor reflection issues.

Both of the scenarios mentioned above are considered accidental damage.
