I've had my AW15 R2 fail to boot twice with this message. Recovery is a bit painful, requires booting from recovery stick, and using a few bootrec commands.
Any ideas why this could be happening in the first place?

Was it like this on arrival? How long have you had the laptop? Can you take a screen shot of the error?
Have you tried running the ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment? (smash the F12 key on reboot, should bring it up)
Do the lights flash? Have you tried running in safemode?
More information please. -
It wasn't like that on arrival, have had it for about 6 months, screenshot attached. Just to be clear, I managed to recover from this completely - the laptop is working normally, however, I do wonder what might be repeatedly causing a serious boot record corruption. Will do the ePSA assessment and report back if anything is noteworthy.

Yes, that's one of the recovery steps, however, my question is: what could be the root cause of the problem? My best guess so far is a fresh Windows 10 bug

i had this error before and was because i tryed to change icons from the system or trying to change things in regedit

That's really weird. I suspect co-incidence. Anyway, neither applies to the cases I've seen.
