hi,im going to buy an m2 ssd 256gb for my alienware 15 r2 and is this program still availble ? going to do a fresh install of windows onto the ssd and use the 1tb for games etc, also can anyone recommend a decent m2 ssd for this and i also read theres 2 ports for this and 1 is faster than the other ?
previous owner sent this back and they installed a new hd 1tb and put windows 10 on it for her
can i use this one ?
Intel 600p 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD/Solid State Drive
256GB Intel 600p Series, M.2 (22x80) PCIe 3.0 (x4) NVMe SSD, 3D TLC NAND, Read 1570MB/s, Write 540MB/s, 112k IOPS
ive just made a recovery windows 10 to usb stick so i take it i can use that, just need to know if this m2 ssd would do the job ?going to wipe this alien and start afresh with ssd as ive noticed the laptop is pretty slow with the 1tb
dont think i need respawn anymore
-
the 600p will work with your system, yes.
You could install it and install the new OS while keeping your old drive installed until you've moved files or just not wipe it beforehand. -
hi,cheers thats all i needed to know, was reading that they say your better to disconnect the hd inside the laptop then put the ssd in on its own ? ive got nothing i need to keep as ive not long got this so can i not just format the drive when i reinstall windows 10 under the options when installing windows ? ive got the windows 10 recovery ready on a usb stick
not done this for a while so im pretty rusty ! f2 then change boot to usb ? or will it just detect the usb when booting up ? -
I wouldn't remove the drive. Just boot off the USB drive and format the SATA drive later like you're planning to do.
You might not be able to get into the bios by F2 or Del. You might need to do an advanced startup through Windows in order to boot into BIOS.
Essentially though yes, you'll probably need to set boot priority in order to boot from the USB stick. -
cheers for advice, will order one up and give it a go ! the laptop seems a bit sluggish not really bad but a bit laggy ! must be the 1tb on its own being loaded with games etc
decent laptop for the money i paid but needs an ssd for windows files only -
I'm going to have to retract my previous OK on this drive;

I'm just as guilty, I have one of these sitting on the kitchen counter as a replacement myself.

Which OS do you have? and was it pre-installed?
-
got windows 10 64bit and was returned by previous owner for a new hd replacement, dell or whoever does the repair installed windows 10 on for her,ive done a recovery windows 10 on usb but need to find out a decent 256gb m2 ssd to put in this machine and not to pricey !
-
OK, if you use the Create Recovery USB from the start menu, it will create a USB that will install the factory image (including drivers and Dell/Alienware-specific software). If you use the OS image from the Dell support driver download web page to create your USB, it will install a clean version of Windows 10 with generic drivers and you'll have to install drivers manually.
To do the install, hit F12 as soon as you see the splash screen to get into the boot menu. Go into setup/BIOS and make sure you are in AHCI and not RAID (SATA configuration under the advanced tab), then f12 during boot, this time select your thumb drive to do the install.
If you use a NVME SSD, the left most slot is faster (x4 pcie), assuming 2.5inch drive over to rightgritts likes this. -
hi m8,thanks very much for the info i appreciate it,im a bit rusty with this kind of stuff and this will help me a lot,ive not ordered up the ssd yet but i might just stick with the Intel 600p 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD/Solid State Drive as its pretty cheap at £90 from scan and ive read other folks have got this in there alien and it works fine
i take it that when im installing windows on the options screen to choose which drive to install to im better off formating the 1tb then ? and then choose to install to the new 256gb m2 ssd & will that need formatted to ? just cant remember as ive not done thuis kind of stuff for agesLast edited: Dec 13, 2016 -
I just disconnected the cable to the 1TB 2.5" drive during the install, then reconnected afterwards.
-
just ordered one from scan coming thursday, would it make a diffrence if i unplugged it or not ? seen a video of someone removing the hd and would i not need to do the same to get to the cable to unplug it
-
You can unplug the cable from the motherboard without removing the hard drive. Do it when you install the M.2 drive. Then boot to your recovery USB drive and do a clean install. then reconnect the 2.5" drive cable back to the motherboard and use diskpart to reformat the 2.5" drive (assuming you have made backups of any files you wanted to save off of it).

will follow your guidence m8,my ssd is coming tommorow and hope it makes a diffrence as im not overly impressed with this laptop as it seems pretty slow,im also minus a screw for holding the m2 ssd but i notice one of the screws holding the plate underneath the laptop fits it,i dont need a special screw or anything do i ? its the same thread & i can always replace the cover one when i get the chance
finish work early tommorow & wife will be out the way which is always a bonus !! haha
