Guys i need help!!! Ive been in a dilemma of choosing between the 15 inch model or the 17 inch model.. Can anyone of you posts any pictures of your new skylake units' screen here?? I wnT to see how the FHD panel in the new 15 r2 is compared to the FHD panel in the 17 r3..
And also is there a big difference in the size when comparing the 15 r2 vs the 17 r3???

I have owned every size alienware from 11-18 except for the 14. I think the 17 is the sweet spot for portability and useful size. You get the number pad and a big enough screen to actually game on, not saying that 15.6 inches is too small but im getting older and the extra real estate really helps. Also using it for working, 17 is a major advantage. I have an R2 17 with the 300nit screen and think the R2 beats the r3 in terms of screen quality. I am only going off of what I have seen at best buy with the R3 17 vs mine.

Does that both have the FHD panel??? Would you say that it wont compromise portability that much if i went for the 17 instead of the 15??

The 15" fhd panels on the R2 are reportedly a huge downgrade from the R2.
I don't know whether the same quality is what they have used in the 17" R3, but I'd start looking at the UHD options if I were you.. -
But the gtx 970m is not that much powerful for 4k gaming.. And i dont have any plans to use the ga anytime soOn.. Thats why im just looking into fhd panels.. Haha

The 17 should be about 4,5 cm wider and 2,2 deeper. It is not so little. From what I know, the 15R2 FHD screen 220 nits is a crap, you can read something about it in this forum. Next week I will order the new AW and I am in your same situation

You can always turn it down to 1080p when gaming. I did this when I had a base AW15 with the 965m and it was just fine.
I personally don't find the 17 that much bigger than the 15, but I already use a 17' laptop bag anyway, so its not like I had to change my transportation solution. -
What unit are you getting then? The 15 or the 17?? FHD or UHD?
Hahaha.. Im already decided before to get the 15 then comes the panel issue.. Hahaha..
-
So i just purchased the UHD for the color nor for the resolution since ill just scale it down to 1080p? Haha..
-
The UHD screen is beautiful and doing basic desktop stuff like browsing and playing windowed gamed (Hearthstone) it did fine. You probably can't find a better screen in any laptop than that one.
-
Just use 1080p when gaming. Problem solved. Plus you get the extra pixels for normal use.
What could be better? :-D -
Hhaha im in a tight budget..
i dont know if its worth it if the fhd panel in the 17 is fine..
thanks for the insights btw..
-
Me too! I really don't need the 4k resolution but I want quality, so I have to renunce SSD and pay anyway a plenty extra (damn AW!). I am gonna use it 99% of the time on my desk but for that 1% I really need portability.
-
Hahaha thats why i think its just a marketing strategy for people to get the uhd thats why they gimped the fhd panel...
I also need portability since i go to different places a lot due to the nature of my work.. But i dont want to cough up more cash just to buy a uhd panel in which i wont probably utilize its 4k.. So im leaning into buying the 17 r3 cause its fhd panel seems decent..

I am a bit lunar... so today I was thinking to buy a pc desktop with gtx970 and then I would have 1000€ to spend in a decent laptop! I am so confused...
-
Hahaha building a desktop would really make the most out of your money..
i just cant do that since i move quite a lot.. If i do that i would be using it rarely.. Hahaha. Thats why its only a laptop for me.. Haha

@ SlashNLennon Did you end up with the 17 r3? How bad would you say the extra weight and size is? I've always used 14" gaming notebooks so I'm a bit skeptical
