This looks very interesting. I wonder what thermals etc will be like.
Also annoyed that there's still no 120hz IPS option

Hmmm, so compared to the current 15 R3/4 design (outside the obvious thinner bezels and chassis),
- One less USB C Port, but one more USB A port.
- USB ports and Ethernet Port placement different. More to the side now. Also only 1 audio port.
- Numpad replaces Marco keys, but the keyboard is now island-styled with some smaller keys (notably the arrow keys).
- M.2 + 2.5" storage. Maybe there'll be a unspoken M.2 2242 slot, but otherwise, 2 less storage slots.
- Smaller max battery size (90 wHr vs 99 wHr).
- New red color (really wish Alienware brought the red color to all laptop models)
- No RX 570, GTX 1080MQ, or i9-8950HK (which is probably a good thing). GPUs not factory OC?
- Offers i5-8300H as base CPU.
- Less/no light strips.
- One more side vent, and the vents look wider. Also no big, deep vents at the back.
- Speakers located on the side.
- Clickpad.
- Back and front rubber feet swap orientation.

They showed a red 13r3 picture but it never came to life.

Looks like a nice competitor for the MSI GS & Gigabyte etc series etc. Wonder how it will perform, I do like the styling. It also seems to be less dependent on the bottom vents thanks to all those side vents.
But I think it will also lose that "tank" feel of the current models.
It has the same 144hz panels as the other oems.VICKYGAMEBOY likes this. -

Hmmmm...sweet. Just offer a 13 or really compact 14 and we’re good. I like how AW has flat sides-not scalloped edges-it’s a better use of space and volume. It’s industrial/utilitarian and most of all its honest. It burns my butt when people say look how thin (insert some manu. Name brand here) is when it’s obvious the dang thin is 1.5” thick and they just scalloped the edges to make it appear thinner. That’s an old dirty trick and folks don’t criticize that enough.
-
If Dell puts 120Hz and G-sync OLEDs in their 2019 line-up with thin bezels they will sell like cakes. No more light-bleed. Even for a high extra price for OLED screen, every gamer will want it. Smartphones are OLED, TVs are OLED why not 15 and 17 inch?
If I am looking at a screen, I look at laptop screen 95% of time, smartphone 5% and TV 0%. -
no thin bezels ??? naaaahhh and that touchpad sucks
-
is an inspiron with a back plate panel of alienware.
Vistar Shook and Papusan like this. -
The side bezels are quite thin, The top and bottom less but if you make those thinner, your chassis has to be smaller as well and that compromises in the amount of space a manufacturer has.
-
I really like the style and am glad they removed the macro keys. Overall I would love if they translated this style to the 17' laptop but thicker for better thermals, but I'm not optimistic given AW recent track record.
-
is not necessary. they can bring the display more at the front and let the back bump "heatsink" for more cooling like the existing models, and the bezels could be a lot smaller
-
Exactly, if they are going to waste space on a numpad and not a few keys for the microphone, volume control, and page up/dn, OEMs should just push the screen forward and remove the bezels.judal57 likes this.
-
Would prefer that too. It would also make the hinge look more flush. The hinge on these models is an eyesore imo. The current thick models have a nice clean look for the hinge.

I'm not entirely convinced this isn't fake, as much as I want it to be real. No major tech sites have commented on this....
-
Let's see performance if it's real, thermals haven't been good on these Alienwares.
Vistar Shook likes this. -
It was already teased by Alienware China.
A lot of people complained about the forward hinge design so it seems they want to play it safe. I dont mind it either way. -
As much as I'd like it to be real, I have to agree. No official press release, nothing on their site or Twitter and all the information I've seen on it comes from a French site. Not saying it's not possible, but for a computer supposed to come or in two months it just seems odd

As said before it comes from Alienware China and it has been confirmed by a spokesperson for that region. The red version is exclusive to China.c69k and VICKYGAMEBOY like this.
-
I understand that, but as said it's just odd that for a supposed US release in two months and an already "official" announcement, there's nothing on this side of the pond. I do hope it's real and look forward to more information about it.
-
im ok with the design.. bezels are thin.. you cant reduce the top part much, due to the IR camera.. or else end up with nose camera.. only thing i dont like is the keyboard, and no tron lights, not even a touchpad light.. this is going backwards from the branding.. mixed up feeling of dell and alienware machine..
-
DELL, please throw in OLED and your sales will skyrocket. You did it as first in a gaming laptop, stay first.

Looks like dell with alienware logo.. They are living up to there new brand name DELLIENWARE.. LOL
Vistar Shook, judal57 and VICKYGAMEBOY like this. -
the problem is they can easily make a good design, a slim 13 or 15 with OLED with 1060 or 1070 full version with thin bezels, and also include all the tron lights.. its just they are too lazy to make a new design.. so they use leftover ideas of old M17x and new dell keyboard etc..
-
I thought DELL would be more flexible and go all OLED by now. As far as I remember they introduced OLED almost 3 years ago, made huge sales/profit with favourite and popular 13 iinch. They should definitely ride the successful wave.
Alienware is in good hands and still is a big name. And, OLED with G-sync or possibly 120Hz is the only way to really make a difference for now compared with other gaming laptops.
People today still buy 13 R3 and 13 R2 for the OLED lol
I would not hesitate to buy 15 or 17 inch from DELL or other brand if OLED + G-sync were offered in near future.Last edited: Aug 26, 2018 -
I thought it was a Clevo or older AW LGA laptops.

The problem with OLED laptop screens is the production for them are done for now. I believe the panels were made by Samsung, so I'd take it up with them. More of the focus is on high refresh rate panels with G-Sync (or Freesync).
-
i still want to buy 13 R3 and add it to my collection, one of a kind OLED gorgeous.. sadly its not available anywhere for cheap..c69k likes this.

Pretty sure the oled panel in the 13in was the same throughout all revisions. This is why I think they won't use oled on all the models. We would be getting the same panels for the next 3 years lmao. Alienware loves to recycle and reuse.
-
If this is true...
Dell continue shrinking the size and weight for the refreshed Alienware’s. What with the cooling? Will it be perform better the thinner it becomes? If this is the new design language I wonder how the bigger brother AW17 will be. Already struggling heavily with the cooling and then the first Dell’s engineers think about is decrease the thickness even more than ever. As well lower the weights with 40%. This does not sound good for better cooling.

They can only use what panel manufacturers offer. There are no other oled panels being made for laptops and the issues still persisted regarding burn-in. So they received some backlash from it.
-
I have read the oled has burn-in and faster panel degradation issues.
-
I have read it too, that blues degrade over time and if you have the same image displayed 24/7 on the screen you get 'burn-in'.
I have set my system to turn off screen after 3 minutes and for the 'blues', based on tests, the impact is minimal or almost unmeasurable. However these were OLED TV tests.
I hope the panel will last lol
If it develops a fault, I will have it exchanged under warranty. -
I had a couple of Samsung Galaxy phones after the S6 and all exhibited quite heavy degradation of the blue color and also burn in of those top bar icons. Wasnt to happy with it. My laptop is on for about 14 hours a day of which 3 are with an external screen. I think I would come across quite quickly to degrading pixels.pathfindercod and c69k like this.

I like the design but hate combo mic/headphones.
It shouldnt be a replacement for the "hefty" units they had honestly it would be nice if they could just have this as a "thin" model and the other as a "high performance" option. Guess Alienware really likes the kool-aid after having a taste.Eclipse251, Vasudev and Papusan like this. -
I have the feeling this is fake, no news regarding this design/model nowhere in any tech site. I don't get why announce it in Europe but not back home.

They probably got around to testing thermals and pulled the plug...

I'd be happy with a red color, but that design looks similar to the gaming inspiron models. They are making the systems too similar if it's real.
This was their best design IMO

Hmm. Looks like I will keep my 13R3. I don’t like anything on this new machine. No dedicated track pad and not centered. Oled not an option?
Vasudev likes this. -
No manufacturer is making 15inch oled panels and from the data I gathered, for a lot of users burn-in/pixel degradation issues are still there. I guess Oled still isnt really really ready yet. Sharp is going to enter the Oled market though so lets see if that makes larger Oled panels more mature.
Even Oled TV's from LG with only white Oled's with a filter on top for color have burn-in issues while those should have been more solid and durable.

Only positive thing is the chance of a vapor chamber! Lol
Design is not to my liking. I don’t like the hinge setup. Looks cheap in the middle like that -
I like the 2.5" drive bay... if it has 2 m.2, then I may change from my 13R3! Hopefully 20xx cards come soon too as I feel stupid owning 2 laptops with 10xx already + my desktop 1080Ti.
-
You maybe waiting a long long time for 20xx card in a laptop that is slim form factor.
