Clevo has proven to be not so upgradable.
If you go to their forums you will see many people that are angry about the new pascal cards which cannot fit in the last generation Clevos.
The keyboards are less then desirable.
Also right now people are seeing temps of 90c on systems with ICD or LM paste.
Also FYI with a 6700k (desktop) + 1080 Clevo suggests two 330w power bricks.
With that said Im considering Clevo simply for the lack of Optimus.
Also their 120hz panels are good. 99% of laptops AW and last gen clevo had 25ms displays. (27ms on 4k panels)
With all that said one needs to see what happens at Pax West. Since now we have desktop GPUs one can assume the next AW will close the gap.
It should be a game changer.

Read somewhere forgot in Reddit or Alienware Arena that the new AW 15 and 17 will come with OLED displays just like 13
-
I doubt it but if that were the case that would suck. IMO
The goal should be:
1. High Refresh rates
2. Low response time -
We'll see, although it seems a 15 or 17 inch OLED panel is not available in the market yet, maybe Dell/Alienware will be the first
OLED panels typically have a high refresh rate and lower response time than the best LCD

It would be nice to have infinity display on alienware laptops. Maybe a combination of OLED and infinity display with Kaby lake processor and pascal gpu inside of it. That would be super expensive!
-
I really don't like oled. My galaxy s6 has screen burn in after a year of use. Dont want that on my laptop.
-
That's the main thing that concerns me with OLED.
They're absolutely ****ing gorgeous but most (if not all?) TVs have firmware that changes what a pixel is displaying if its been static for x amount of time to reduce the chances of burn in. Its usually fast enough that people can't detect it but you can also disable it if needed.
Computers on the other hand, AFAIK, do not have any such firmware and they have a huge amount of static images. The taskbar, the menu bar, address bar, etc. I would expect those areas of the screen to burn in rather quickly. -
I have read in a Korean Tech article talking about the new OLED technology and how the LED's are different than the older generation ones that had the burn in issue. There's a different structure / arrangement of the LED's along with it being a newer tech of organic compound, which is suppose to address the burn in issues of the older OLED's. It did however mention that it was still in development so who knows if these panels made it over to the newer AW's or not. I'd be surprised for Dell to go in blind with these panels if there was a major issue...but then again, it's Dell and they are famous for some dumb mistakes.
I think in due time the burn in issue will be the thing of the past.
Only time will tell. They do look amazing though and I'll take one... -
Are you sure? Not SLI right, single 1080p ?
I know the 6700k is double he tdp of the usual laptop i7 of 45 Watt tdp.
because I was planning to get a laptop with 6700hq or 7700hq if what you are saying is true, I won't have enought with a 330 watt unless, clevo is suggesting it for the overclockers.
I currently have a 240 watt psu
47 Watt cpu
122 watt gpu. I have just about enough to run it.
So jumping to 330 watt means 90 watt extra
I will now most likely be getting a 45 watt cpu and the 1080, which has a tdp of 180 watt.
so I thought 330 watt should be enough, if you use a laptop cpu right?
Though looking now at the TDP's since the 6700K has a tdp of 91watt it indeed makes sense that 330 Watt is not enough for that cpu + the 1080 -
The Samsung Galaxy S6 screen is pretty new and the same one as in the S7.
The blue lights degrade too fast which causes the burn in. I only expect this to be worse on larger panels because the yields arent that great yet. Anyway that is my expectations. I really would worry if I had Oled in my laptop. Those 13inch laptops with Oled panels are also still so rare. -
I was tempted to buy a Razer Blade on ebay and I think paypall covers scamming so I'm not that worried about that. HID also sells the new Razer Blade.
My main concern is the warranty. If you check the RazerBlade reviews on Amazon, there are quite some issues. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Razer europe covers tech support on a US bought device in the same way that Dell/Alienware does. Sending a laptop back to the US for repairs is quite expensive and is time consuming. -
This is correct. I once wanted buy a Razer Blade as well. But the amount off issues and confirmed by Razer that no warranty would be issued made me decide otherwise.

I'm considering a less powerful and less weighty build that should generate less heat:
6700HQ, GTX1060, 200 watt Power Brick.
Concerning Optimus, none of the GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080 equipped laptops are limited by Optimus and should be VR compatible which means that you shouldn't be limited to Clevo.Last edited: Aug 29, 2016 -
not sure what to say about the new font... seems to indicate their laptops are getting slimmer
if this picture is of any indication, it seems we're getting an overhaul in design at least on the lid, the bezels seem smaller and the bottom part have a different designLast edited: Aug 29, 2016Wonkyfinger likes this. -
MSi GE and GS series use optimus on internal display, dunno about the external ports.
-
Grrrrr...I have a Sager (back)ordered, but I'm thinking about canceling to check out the Alienware lineup. My 15 r2 is hands down my favorite of gaming notebooks that I have owned, and I have had Razer, Clevo/Sager, Asus and MSI.
-
Looks like the pic was taken down... Does anyone have another good link? I am dieing to see what they are coming out with. I just want to drool....
-
it' on their facebook page
just go to facebook, search Alienware, then sort using Pictures, and find a picture with unfamiliar Alienware font infront a laptop lid -
Ah... I thought it was a full frontal with the lid closed. The font does look more premium and will probably have less bleed now... good step in the right direction, but even HP cleaned up their logo so thats not saying much...
-
i think the BRAND logo is going to change, to the new badass alien logo
-
It's going to be interesting to see what AW pulls through with...not expecting huge surprises but...it doesn't hurt to be optimistic.
-
I didn't know about that. Good to know although it doesn't really matter to me. My main concern with optimus is that it makes a most notebooks unusable for vr development and that problem seems to be eradicated with pascal.
-
Is there a difference? Can't seem to notice it
The best I'm hoping Alienware could do is probably offering MXM GPUs, they still offer MXMs for their Precision laptops so there's still fair chance. LGA CPU is far too optimistic I doubt they will do it, so yeah the best they could do now is follow MSI's footstepsVasudev likes this. -
Intel have stopped making notebook CPUs in anything but BGA. The only way to get LGA is to use a desktop CPU, which means 65W TDP instead of 45W. I don't see Dell ever going for that.
MXM isn't looking much better. The MXM-SIG hasn't published an update since 2012. Dell's Precision range no longer use MXM. Clevo have deviated from spec with their GTX 1080 because the board is too small. I can see MXM fragmenting into a bunch of vendor-specific variants, used more for modularity than compatibility.
I think the quest for smaller and lighter is going to kill off user-upgradability in all but a few boutique brands.iunlock likes this. -
