Result of half hour FPU on 17R5 w/ 8950hk (re-pasted). 10C max core temp diff.
Very hot but seems even. Thoughts?

B-b-but they said improved cooling system and Up to 5GHz ! What'll hapen if OCed out of the BOX ?!

For that to knwo we msut know how hard the fans where spinning for this test. If the fans hardly turn on than these temps are great and there is room for more. If the fans already are running full tilt, then these temps suck, especially when an overclock is applied.

he does not know what he talks about lol at that temperature, the fans are clearly running at 4000RPM + so no, we do not need to know how fast they spun. After checking the screenshot again, check the package power draw of more than 90 watts. Its running the I9 i think and with all 6 cores enabled 3.9 is the max boost clock. The 5ghz is only for a single core. So this CPU is going full blast here. The I9 only has a 45watt TDP on the baseclock so its boosting now. If it is truly running at 90 watts than these temps are pretty good.
The machine is not officialy out there so not sure what the state of the EC firmware is that controls the fans. With the AW15R2 for example they where horribly slow to kick in and they only started to spin at 75c with firmware 1.28. So yeah it is hard to say how hard they spin at this time. Some Asus and Gigabyte laptops are hot as well but also quiet and have conservative fan profiles so again there is not saying at this time how loud the fans are. It can be anything. Not enough data to build a conclusion on.

And yet CPU temperature is still bouncing off upper 80s....still unacceptable. Why does Dell insist on using cheap crappy paste when they could commission Phobya to get their extreme compound on there at 16 w/mk.....I think it would seriously be worth the extra money upfront at the factory vs paying for RMA shipping, paying for somebody to remove and repaste.....but what do I know, I'm just a stupid college student.

Dunno if it is truly pulling more than 90watt then those temps are not that bad I think. What surprises me more is how much it pulls above the baseclock TDP though.
All laptop reviews that I have seen until now with these CPU's run hot though so it doesnt bode too well. None could hold their boost for prolonged time.
Regarding the paste, its just a step less during assembly when the paste is already applied at the heatsink factory. Also they are sure that they are all pasted equally even though the paste itself is not good (if they still use the stamp method).
The later batches from the current generation did in the end had real thermal paste. But those few bucks of proper paste wouldnt be too much to ask I guess.....Maybe its the longevity of the paste that matters. No data on that. I never ran a laptop with stock paste for longer than a month of 2. -

I'm pretty optimistic that with some LM magic and balancing that this thing can hold its own...
Also, remember that this is just a face lift type of refresh..it's NOT a full on refresh.

i9-8950Hk has 4.3GHz default Turbo boost for all 6 cores. Base clocks shouldn’t matter with a unlocked chips. Just increase power limits.Vasudev and Vistar Shook like this.

But thats a short boost only. Its pulling more than 90watts already. Need to see more data, but the I7 six core in the zephyrus can only boost for so long to 69watts and after it loses its boost and is barely faster than the 7700HQ (25sec). I think it will be a bit of an inconsistent CPU i think.

Short boost? What is that? Unlocked cpu means you can put whatever power limits you want. Only limits should be the cooling. You shouldn’t compare it with a half locked down chips.Rei Fukai and Vistar Shook like this.

I suspect similar safeguards will in place. If it uses 90watts as the screenshot suggests the bios will not allow it to boost higher to protect the motherboard. Unless they have a much beefier power delivery in place.

From what I have read, Msibook doesn’t cut of before 115W. I mean Current Alienware manage +-100w. Clevo +205w. Why should Dell cut it lower than for their models with 4 cores chips? Maybe due the cooling in this model? Or because Dell finally have learned from previous models overheating problems?

Higher fanspeeds I think. Onthe current gen models the fanspeeds is quite a bit higher when the GPU also kicks in. But yeah need to wait for more data to see whats up.

It's not the watts that make it cut out, brother Papusan.
it's the amps, on some strange temp curve.
The watts are irrelevant. I just happened to reach 94C at 115W at 4.9 ghz = EC power trips the laptop.
BGABOOK. CANCERBOOK. TRASHBOOK. TURDBOOK. VOMITBOOK.
There are two higher temp cutoff stages: 94C and 92C, after a certain amount of amps. (where the laptop will simply power trip instead of reaching thermal throttling).
Then as amps increases, the cutoff drops SHARPLY downwards, to where the laptop will shut off INSTANTLY (in less than 1/10th of a second) when you try to pull that amount of amps (4.7 ghz Prime 95 FMA3/AVX, small FFT's).
It's the actual EC that actually reads the exact power going to the system. (CPU+GPU), in EC RAM registers C8 and C9. No way to shut off these registers without hacking the EC. Even changing IMON SLOPE has no effect, as these registers bypass the Bios.
The cutoff can only be disabled by hacking the EC, which you can't do without bricking the laptop. Completely unknown whether the amps/temp limit can be changed via EC RAM registers, if it can, i sure haven't found out how to do it. -
Please research how to convert wats to ampers, and that can bring you to conclusion they represent same thing, similar thing would be if you say to someone it is not celsius degrees that makes difference it is fahrenheit. Point is as soon some unit can simply be converted to another you can use both by your preference...
