Do you really need external screen if you want better bench score? I have never heard about this before.

I'm guessing you used an external monitor? I'll have to try it, also what kind of score do you get using the AW screen?

The AGA uses a JST connector which looks like this:

When you're using the laptop's screen, the rendered output is piped back over the same connection used to send data to the AGA. This typically takes up about 10% of the bandwidth.

If you use an external monitor plugged into the AGA, there's no need to send the rendered output back to the laptop. That 10% overhead goes away, letting you get higher frame rates.

So yes, using an external monitor will help withperformance.

I understand. This means that people need also to invest in an external monitor to have the pleasure of maximum performance from their external graphics card. Oh well
This means that those who bought GTX 970 desktop cards. Barely can have better performance than a heavy OC'd GTX980M if they used the internal screen.

It means all that heat your OC'd GTX980m would be making is external to the laptop.

Hey folks.. brand new on here. I was looking for some information about my X51 R3. I purchased a graphics amplifier and an ASUS 1070 Founders Edition. Currently the X51 has a GTX 960 inside. I was wondering how this may effect the performance? It almost seems as if my system recognizes both cards and is using both as they both seem to be spinning up. My monitor is showing usage of the 960 even though both of my displays are hooked up to the 1070 in the GA.

I know that this isn't an SLI situation... just confused as I figured the 960 would not be used for really anything. Both cards register and both are showing activity. Is it possible that some work is being offloaded on to the 960? Should I just remove it?

Sorry if this seems incredibly newbish. I just recently got the desktop and have been a console nerd for a long time.

I finally plugged an external monitor to do some more testing with the AGA and GTX 1080 FE and I was amazed by the improvement in scores. This was with a slight OC of +150 on core and +200 on memory using MSI afterburner and top temp was 69 C which has room for more OC. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/12680396? I am now more relieved knowing with an external monitor the performance is there.

i7-4980HQ is known for heavy throttling. A Skylake 6700Hq should fine match previous HQ top model without much difficulty even with lower clock speed ;)

Not necessarily.. Each GPU variant performs differently in different benchmark tests. Some are stronger in one type but not in another, but in theory the 1080 should beat the Titan X. Also his 17R3's CPU is not better than the one in my 17R2.. I also have a 17R3 with a better CPU than the one he has, which I have yet to test/benchmark with my AGA. Contemplating selling my Titan X to buy a nice 1080, although I really desire to hold off until the 1080Ti gets released because the performance difference with my current setup is far too close to justify an upgrade in GPU as it stands.

The 1080 did, he got 15629 in firwstrike
The Titan on the R2 got 15470 in firestrike. However the 1080 was OC.
The skylakes and the haswells perform about the same. Skylakes are just a little cooler and more energy efficient.
The Titan X, the 1080, and the 980Ti are also around the same. It only takes a bit of OC to get a Titan X and a 980Ti to get really close to the numbers of a 1080.

Look at the numbers a bit closer and you'll see the 1080 is slightly better.

True, in Firestrike.. Try beating my 3DMark 11 score & see how you do.. That's a different kind of benchmark all together & the 1080 may not be able to top out the Titan X there although I hope it does. P18838

    Need your opinion:

    I'm going for 1080p gaming at a rock solid 60fps, full settings. Should I get a 1080 or a 1070?
Do you think the 1070 can survive 2 gens of 1080p gaming?

    Considerations:

Today's 80 series will likely be next gen's 70 series (i.e. the 1070 performs almost exactly like the 980ti). That means if I buy a 1080, I'll probably be able to use it for 1-2 more gens.
If I get a 1070, it won't hurt as much (financially) then I can just buy another 70 series card down the line.

One more thing. Will the 1070 work with the AGA? I read a few pages back that there's a problem.

So you're able to close the AGA completely with the cx650m? if so i'm definitely grabbing one for the noise reduction.

I got an Evga 1080 SC a little over a week ago and finally decided to run a benchmark tonight (after getting 3dmark on sale), and Firestrike result was 15502. Thats with no overclock. This is with a 17R3 6820HK. Bios is 1.2.8. I then decided to try using MSI Afterburner but got very unstable results when running the benchmark. It went black and unresponsive. Had to hard reset. Happened 3 times, with what i thought was mild overclocks. I'm wondering if there is an issue with MSI and an EVGA card? This was the latest beta of Afterburner. Should I try with EVGA Pecision?

Edit: Got more stable results with Precision OCX. Card does not seem that overclockable though. I managed a slightly better score than what I'm posting, but I did not save it:
