Aren't you confusing refresh rate with ghosting? Its still a 60 hz panel so you will see animation trails when wiggling windows like that.

On battery the gpu caps at 800 MHz
So significant performance impact
But also the unit is very quiet under load in this mode. I think I'll be creating an under lock profile when I want to game lighter titles with quiet fans.

Panel selection and size, upping 1 inch diagonal will exponentially increase everything else.
With the default LCD you should be getting that trailing point, the response time is 25ms (or even higher) on the IPS screens.
What you want to do is lock p-states with nvidia inspector multi display power saver. -
The ultimate 13 R3 = Aorus X3 primary thin form/bezels design + Alienware build quality + Alienware graphics amp would be a dream come truePMF likes this.

I would pay whatever premium for another inch on the 13.3 and I suspect it wouldn't be challenging engineering wise to do so. Cutting the panels in 14.3 diagonally sounds like a manufacturer's nightmare seeing as they're barely keeping up w/the 13.3's based on public information. The base chassis is large enough for it already. Seems weird to have a large laptop w/a small screen and I think the general consensus now and going forward is that large bezels are widely unaesthetic to consumers.

A la 'Dell xps 15'
Next refresh could be a 14" oled with the xps bezels (or lack of)..... Stunning.

xps bezel is very nice imo, but since AW has the windows hello camera on top they can't do that
bottom area is too small to fit the camera without compromising on integrityRairch likes this. -
I'd happily give up the camera. Never going to happen though.
I actually don't mind the bezels.......... Yes they are big, but when gaming the oled blacks merge into them and they never bother me.
Daytime is ever so slightly more of an issue (well 'noticeable' more than an issue) but to be honest, I hardly notice anyway with the oled being so bloody stunning.

Agreed. I still don't believe in the Tobii despite being open minded and watching several videos on its features and functionality. It's far less capable on the 13s and 15s as well, so they should've just scrapped it entirely.
For now, I think can live with the thick bezels. I probably won't even be using the OLED (personal luxury) often outside of traveling (when i'm bringing my laptop with me) since I'll be connected to my external monitor and keeping the lid closed and off.Rairch likes this. -

Say whaaaaat?
Can you explain further? Is this something in the standard geforce control panel? I just tried using MSI Afterburner to underclock and I don't think it did anything. I also noticed on battery MSI AB stated the CPU capped at 40% utilization, while clocks remained the same? So maybe how I'm thinking about it is wrong. -
That's what mine says as well! Sadly, from the playing with the laptop side of things, I'm going to be spending New Years weekend with the girlfriend and I don't know how well mucking about with a new laptop would go over (although she also games so I might get at least a little time in, plus there's Friday and Thursday night).Last edited: Dec 27, 2016selvedge likes this.

The version of nvidia inspector I downloaded is causing BSODS. Would be nice to find a guide that shows how I can run at a lower p-state even when plugged in for times when I want less fan noise. Any tips?Nomi92 likes this.

Hey guys,
Finally got the shipment notification after much confusion. Due here on the 29th.
A little back story, I ordered on Dec. 16th and received a notice that said my product was completed and ready for shipment on the 24th. I called this morning to see when they were shipping it and got tech support in India. The CSA told me that my order had in fact not been completed due to a part shortage and that I received the completion notice by mistake. A few hours later I got my shipment notice and when I checked the tracking it said that the product has been picked up in Hawthorne, CA.
I think Dell has some internal recording issues to take care of. -
Just a quick one.
Anyone experiencing a lot of heat on the left half of keyboard? The palmrest seems fine just say a third of the keyboard on the left?
CPU temps 76 gpu 78 playing doom for an hour.
Not noticed it before.

They're sending a tech to replace my heatsink, thermal pads and thermal paste this week. I will try to take a video of the job and also what kind/brand of pads and paste they're using.Dell is sending the parts (heatsink, pads/paste)
My GPU was hitting 93c when the
online support did a video card test.Bahn Yuki likes this. -
After seeing the review for this notebook and the OLED screen I will definitely be picking one up. This thing looks amazing and has some life with the amplifier too.

I'm in the process of getting my 13 R3 returned, the laptop doesn't turn on and I've noticed the AC adapter's LED goes out when I plug the laptop in. This seems to be the same issues my parents had with their three year old Inspiron 15R SE, so I'm gonna have to bail before I follow this same road.
-
it was never tobii on the 15 and 13, only presence detector
-
You're forcing the gpu to stay on a lower power state using this option.

I'm tracking after some Google searches. However, current versions of NVIDIA inspector crash my system hard! Bsod city

Got my brand new 13R3 in just an hour ago. I took it apart to repaste and they defiantly fixed the heatsink contact as not only are they using normal thermal paste now on the CPU but it has full contact. I just removed that and the stamp gunk on the 1060 and repasted with some Grizzly thermal compound. At idle the cores were withing 1C of each other at 34/33/34/33 and now running OCCT so will get back.
The question now is do I want to keep this or the 15R3?? The 13R3 weight and size is great just the palm rest is just a tad too small. The OLED screen is gorgeous and Star Wars Battlefront looked beautiful. For most games I will play at 1080p anyhow so would the 1060 be something to hold me off for 18 to 24 months? -
So they've incorporated the thinner heatpads over the choke like on the 15 and 17 inch models? Next time you open it up could you post a picture of the heatsink if it's not too much trouble?Rairch likes this.
-
Sure I can if I get some time. Yes they are using the thinner thermal tape like iunkock showed in the video.

Also what is everyone's opinion between the 13R3 and 15R3?? I have a few days to decide on which one I can keep.

To me the portability of the 13 is great plus the OLED is just stunning! Depends on your needs mate.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk -
For me, that would depend on two questions.
1. Are you going to travel?
2. Will you get the 1060 on the 15r3.
If you're travelling alot then ofcourse id stick with the 13 r3 as the 15 is way too heavy, atleast for me. Also if youre getting the 1060 anyway, why not get it in a smaller package and get an external screen if you need a larger display. -
True. To be honest I have a nice powerful desktop right now and this guy would be used to bring over friends houses and the occasional LAN party.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
1. Very little actual traveling. 3-5 times a year I travel. Most of the time it's gaming on the go.
2. The 15r3 I have has a 6820hk and a 1070 in it. -
Well then its a tossup between power and portability. Whichever you prefer!Rairch likes this.

Man it's a tough decision to make.

Just keep the 13 to gaze at that oled!

You could always get a graphics amp down the road if you do keep the 13 r3.
-
Well this guy is intended for 100% portability so the graphics amp is out of the question.

Depends on how soon you might want to upgrade like if you upgrade yearly or not. If you upgrade yearly I'd do the 13. If you want it Beyond 2 years then 15. The aw13 r4 will probably equal or just surpass the 1070 with the 1160

You already have a desktop. Keep the AW 13 for the OLED, and watch movies in bed or the couch.
If having trouble deciding, Play LIMBO, INSIDE, The Fall, The Swapper, and/or The Witness on that OLED screen. Amazing high contrast games.Rairch likes this. -
I usually upgrade once a year or every 18 months.

How's your battery ? -
Not bad actually.
Use power saving mode, dim display after 1min etc and get 4 hours browsing.
Gaming on high performance is about an hour, but that's to be expected.
The wear is bothering me a bit, going to get Dell to send another out I think. Will give it a week or so and see what happens to it settling down.

Mine seems to have settled on 6.3%. I'm also trying to stay away from this forum as it just needlessly makes you worry about things!

I'm thinking about using my Rewards credit to pick up the WD15 USB-C dock. Anybody already have this and care to share your experience? It'd be nice to dock with a max of two cables if possible (one USBC/and one POWER). It would be even more interesting if I can do one cable docking (USB-C) only, and still get some benefit to power delivery (I think USB-C maxes out at 100Watts).
-
So just finished the repaste
Overall took me half an hour, due to taking the time to get a feel for the disassembly process.
Really well put together machine and extremely user friendly.
(Such a simple process, will only take ten mins from now on)
Dells paste is terrible, everywhere was dry as a bone, well look at the pics.
Will run some tests over the next day or 2 to let it settle in.
Seems to have done the trick so far.

GPU not breaking 70 now at full load. Happy with that.
CPU 0 hitting 76 (other are around 65) so not much difference on that core, leads me to believe the heatsink is crap. Or the paste needs to settle down.
(or I'm terrible ot the line method
)
Either way I'll monitor it over the next few days.
With an undervolt of - 0.150v its sitting in mid 30's at idle.

I'd say wait for Plugable's Thundebolt 3 dock that should be coming out sometime in Q1 2017. That's what I'm waiting for as I hear bad things about some of the docks being offered now, and don't want to settle for a USB 3.0 dock.

Just picked up my new 13, transporting it home, Argh excited!

Good stuff.
How many degrees difference has the repaste made?
Also did you spread the paste all over or just put down a grain of rice?
