Somehow I suck at it too. I did 2 repasted, didn help at all. The screws are messed up, so I order 50 new ones via ebay. I will wait for those before repasting again.

Anyone get an i5 version of this? I wonder of the Intel XTU can be used on it to undervolt it. I seen some of the temperatures on the i7-6700HQ across several systems and they look really high and was curious to see if the i5 runs cooler. I doubt it since they seem to have the same TDP.

Nice! I wasn't planning getting a machine then, thankfully, I can still claim a 10% initial discount from Dell. My main complain with Dell UK is that they only include 1 year warranty by default.

Yes, indeed. If the problems persists, you can switch to dGPU via the control panel and make sure you are using high performance mode.

Let me know how it goes. Indeed, AWs were always maintenance friendly. If I recall correctly, the only "hard to reach" part were the keyboard and two of the four RAM slots in the AW18.

The first time I pasted I did it evenly, but it doesn't give the right results.

The second time was better, I screwed each screw fully before moving on to the next. So 7 to 6 to 5 and so on...

Might try this when I put in the new battery.

Usually just do the even pressure across opposites.

Did you find much of a difference the 2nd time or just a degree or two?

A few degrees, but haven't fully tested it yet. When I checked the paste from the first time it didn't look right, so I decided to do it in order the second time.

    Will do.
Want to see how the paste spread more than anything.
I can't see they'll be much difference to be honest....
But, a few degrees is a few degrees!

Anyone know if these screws would work for the heatsink screws? The Dell service manual says that the heatsink screws are M2x3 but there are a lot of different kinds that I found. Link to the screws

Oh and we should definitely have a chatroom for this thread or something :p

Really recommend against this. While it is a quad core, it has half the # of threads (only 4 as opposed to 8). Will show considerable less performance in multi thread apps. Not just clocked lower.

Still a 45 TDP processor; so probably only marginal temp difference.

Has anybody experienced a crash during game? Screen freezes and constant noise?
Playing doom multiplayer but first time it's happened.

Possible undervolt issue? Has been steady at - 0.150v for a while now.

What does happen to me once in a while though is that the screen shutsoff due to inactivity and then the computer freezes.

Any fixes for this? This occurs ingame ofcourse.

I've been thinking about the upcoming refresh and I really don't think that we'll see any drastic changes from the current model and doubt that this will even merit the adoption of the 13 R4 moniker (unless they need a way to distinguish them because of the new motherboard). It reminds me of the initial 13 R1 refresh that added the 960m more than anything and, while that added more power, it wasn't game changing. Nor, for that matter, was the 13 R2 that followed.

We'll know more for sure tomorrow, and even more once people get the Kaby Lake machines, but I'm not expecting to be overwhelmed by the urge to return/upgrade.

The service manual stated that the heat sink screws are M2x3. So I ordered these ones.
Also I really couldn't take it when the screws get scratched during the process. ;-)

So I repasted again and took a pic of how much I'm using this time:
    Still too much?

15 minutes of Prime95+Unigine Heaven is getting me a max of 90C/85C/90C/85C on CPU and max of 92C on GPU. Definitely have to wait a little longer but seems like temps are so far the same, if at least a couple degrees cooler on the CPU. This is all with an undervolt of -0.140V and no performance modes on. Flat on top of a table at 69°F ambient temp. I'm thinking of getting an exchange if temps don't improve much further. But I want to see what other people have to say first. Hope this helps anyone!

I'm still laughing at how my temps were the best at stock lol

Edit: 51 minutes in and temps are the exact same

What paste are you using? Seems a tad too much, I always use the plastic tool or brush to even it out. If there's a little too much I just move it to the center of the die.

I'm using Kryonaut. It definitely does look like a lot, looking at the picture again, especially on the CPU. I tried the pea method this time around as I hear it gives good results. I honestly think I may not be tightening the heatsink down as I can because these screws just strip so so easily... I'm planning in buying extra M2x3 screws and probably wont be opening up my laptop again til I get them. Trying to get out multiple stripped screws get old quick.

@selvedge also I once got a bad batch of IC diamond. It might even been a fake, the temps were way off. Tried a different brand and got like 20 degrees Celsius difference. You never know...

Haha yeah that's not a pea more like an apple... But traditional paste shouldn't be that bad temp wise even with a little too much paste.

Guys.. I didn't mean for this to be my first post but Dell has lost their minds and have WD Blue 250GB m.2 ssd for $29.99.. should work for the 2nd db bay in the 13r3, right? http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/wd-b...bsmi-fcc-kc/apd/a9301055/storage-drives-media

They also have the same 250 GB 2.5 inch SSDs for $19.99 each.. http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/wd-b...-sata-6gb-s/apd/a9301054/storage-drives-media

I have been following this thread and ordered mine on December 14th , 13R3, i7, 8gb, 256, 1080 screen... got it delivered on the 23rd of Dec 2016. Had high temps, repasted twice, 2nd time with grizzly kryonaut, idle is low-mid 40s and under load seems to only go to about 72 while playing HTC Vive. Still think I used too much and may repaste again later. Battery wear was up to 10.1% but has gone back down to 8.3%; will see if it changes any over the next few days.

    Thanks..

Hey gang, cross post from the amp thread...

After trading out my old 17r3 for a 15r3 I can no longer set my notebook to sleep with the amp in. They added some kind of update to the old 17 that allowed this function but it seems absent in the new notebooks. Anyone else notice this or am I missing something? I've tweeted Azor to see if he knows what's up but nothing so far.

I undervolted my core i5 to -0.15, with the result that the max cpu temp dropped by about 10 C when doing the 5 minute XTU stress test.

I think you put waaaay too much of it :/ [thicker amount would result in loss of thermal conductivity..]. I would use a half of what you have here on the CPU and 2/3s on the GPU.
Have you tried the spread method ? I find it to be the best [at least for my desktop cpus in the past]

So I switched back to normal mode from CPU performance mode just to see what the temps would be like with a -0.140 V.

With cpu performance my GPU would be a 71, CPU mid 70 to high 60.
In normal mode: GPU 79-81. CPU high 70 to mid 80s. The fans in normal mode are obviously A LOT quieter and they just dont want to kick in until mid to low 80s.

I use a grain of rice size on cpu and an 'ever so slightly' longer line on the gpu.

Strange how your Temps are waaay off after a repaste.

Id be tempted to chuck that paste and purchase some from a reputable supplier or from the company direct.

Does seem odd, as that paste is meant to be #1 for thermals. (should still perform even if you do chuck a bit more than needed on)

Edit. Just a thought, (and I don't mean to sound funny) but are the fans definitely connected back up properly?

Just I have read someone was idling at 69 only to find the fan wasn't connected back up after reassembly. :)

Kaby lake has landed. £50 difference for me to spec the same laptop. The config comes with a 1050 ti but Fortunately the 1060 upgrade is £0 to upgrade. They did this with the killer 1435 and 1535 to select either but now it's a £10 upgrade so no doubt the 1060 will increase between £50-80.
I think I might bite the bullet but try and get them to lower the price a bit more than 10% just to close that £46 difference. But all in all I'm getting 800mhz more (maybe I might notice it) maybe more battery life (if 30 minutes maybe. I bet that's pushing it) and maybe better temps (but I'm not expecting much)
If there's any extras to the unit that might of changed then hopefully I notice.
I'll chat with them shortly and report. But I'm expecting a I won't receive it till maybe end of the month. But I did receive my last aliens ware a week earlier in December and that was before Xmas so maybe they can do that? I'd feel "complete" with a 7700hq inside.

What do you mean? I put my computer to sleep all the time while the undervolt is applied.

Anyways, what i was talking about wasnt sleep. What happened was when I'm playing overwatch ill sometimes grab my phone while a match is loading up. The screen shuts off cause im not using it, but moving the mouse doesnt bring the screen back on (I can still hear the game music completely fine).

Using too much paste shouldn't make too much of a difference with temps as opposed to not using enough.

    Why bother.
Got a good machine now, for the sake of 6% max increase over skylake and better 4k playback...... Is it worth the month wait?

Cant say it is for me.
