so, why you didn't ask for a replacement? the 15 is the best 15 inch laptop you can find out there!

So you would send it back to get another laptop but not to get it fixed...... Whatever, do what you want.

I did the same as he did and I couldn't be happier.

I expect a $1500+ machine to arrive in perfect working condition. If it doesn't, it goes back.

Too many people are ok with Alienware's terrible quality control just because they know they have a good warranty. Who knows what else they might screw up trying to fix the original issue when it's sent in for repairs...

If all he plays is LoL, the Omen is a much better choice.

And if he doesn't need the mobility, a desktop is the best option.

Except that Dell will build you a whole new system if something goes wrong within the first month. You just have to ask the reps (sometimes they'll offer it themselves) that rather than have a tech come out to fix it, or send the laptop in, you want a new replacement system built.

You can get a replacement system built for almost any reason you can imagine lol within that period. And the reps usually throw in other things to, I got a free vindicator backpack because I had a monitor issue (looks like it got damaged during shipping) and my new system is perfect.

And if you think HPs quality control is better than Alienwares you must be joking lol, though the omen is a premium product so I hope its better, not to mention that their warranty is significantly worse.

That said the Omen is a very very sexy laptop. It's probably one of the coolest looking laptops that I've seen, all while still retaining some bit of professionalism.

No, his issues are him related. Most of his problems (including unable to install command center, how much time remaining with the battery mode that changes based on the usage, and a part of keyboard not turning on which now I know why - command center not utilized...) are software related or not being familiar with the computer in general. There were advises noted in these forums but I assume that he ignored them or didn't do a simple search.

He's been nitpicking. I'd think that he would do the same with Omen.

All I know is that I've purchased two Alienwares in the past 4 years and BOTH arrived with defective hardware (M14x = bad mobo; 15 = vibrating fan, broken hard drive connector, and several other issues).

The Omen arrived in perfect condition and hasn't had an issue yet.

    Maybe it's just bad luck.

No, I am not nitpicking. I'm fairly familiar with computers in general, thank you very much buddy. The light definitely gave out, as in DIED. And all the other lights randomly turn on and off in different areas, with Alienware Command Center. I've done plently of research, and also another factor that is not fixable is the ridiculous heat production from the laptop, making it more of a desktop than a laptop. Simply, this laptop is not good enough to be worth $1900, maybe I will be better off with another laptop or an actual desktop. I could see many with this Alienware, need to switch out for a new laptop in a short span of a few years, it simply is not really built to last.

Anyone who got the gtx 980m and 4K display config tried hooking up to their 4K TV ? With only HDMI 1.4 equipped, how is it going to hook up to 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 inputs? If this can work as a 4K console, thinking it may worth the extra cash after all.

The only method I can think of is getting a miniDP to HDMI 2.0 (or 1.4, if it could work).

HDMI 2 is backwards compatible so your 1.4 cable / port will work just fine.

HDMI 1.4 can push 4K just at 30fps, vs HDMI 2 at 50-60fps.

I was about to buy the 970M version, but the version with the 980M is on sale apparently. Should I buy that one instead? How are the temperatures with the 980M version? Does it run much hotter than with the 970M?

    Option 1: i7-4710HQ, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 1080p IPS, 980M 4GB
    15577 NOK = 1915 USD

    or

    Option 2: i7-4710HQ, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 1080p IPS, 970M 3GB
    15742 NOK = 1936 USD

The price is basically the same, so which one is the best option?

The 980M. You can always upgrade the ram yourself for significantly less than dell is charging you.

Depends on what you're doing lol. There are a lot of console games that are 30fps. Pretty much every TV show and movie is 24fps.

The reason 30fps looks slow to you is because your monitor is refreshing at 60hz. So you're seeing the same rendered image twice because your GPU is pushing only 30fps.

Now if your TV is refreshing at 30hz and your GPU is pushing 30fps, then the difference isn't as noticable. That's the whole principle of gsync / freesync.

Hi guys, is the first time I write here.
Im having a problem with my AW15 i bought a month ago, specifically with GTX 980M cause is giving me the error "video_trd_faliure(nvlddmkm)" and literally i had done everything.
and i don't know what other thing to do. I had done a clean windows 8.1 install with the necessary driver then installing windows 8 updates and finally the nvidia card driver. I change the BIOS to A00. I uninstall and install the nvidia card and still giving me the error with the blue screen restart every time i open the nvidia control center and sometime just without doing something in the desktop the error shows.

Someone with the answer please.... i appreciated your help

    Please hear me out.

I just called Dell Support, and as it stands, they refuse to send me a 240W adapter. They claim the Bios A02 has fixed the problem with the CPU throttling and lower FPS, and that a new adapter simply is not necessary anymore, and that it was just a quick solution while waiting for the Bios update.

So the question is: Is that true? Or should I call them again, hopefully talk to a nicer guy, and still demand a 240W adapter?

    (My laptop hasn't arrived yet).

    hi all
i have a very "funny" problem on a brand new aw15 and i'm wondering if anyone has the same, i found some related discussions here, but not exactly what i'm experiencing:
when the synaptics driver is installed for the touchpad, the mous will "hang" every now and then (but at least once every 20 secs). it will just stop moving and also the keys on the touchpad won't work. then after around 1 second, everything works again for a moment until it happens again.
if the synaptics driver is uninstalled, this problem doesn't occur anymore. of course, the usage of the touchpad with the generic windows drivers is a bit funky. i'm using it without synaptics driver now, but was courious, if anyone had or has the same prob and if whoever was able to solve it otherwise than just uninstalling the syn. driver :)

    cheers

    Nope its a setting.

Find the touchpad icon in your system tray (bottom right corner) -> right click and select 'touchpad properties' -> uncheck 'turn on palm rejection'

    Then

Start menu -> search for touchpad -> 'Mouse and touchpad settings' -> set the value under touchpad to 'No delay (always on)'

Just discovered an impressive website gpulibrary.com. See how mobile/desktop GPU perform in many games in 1080p or 4k. Anyone can confirm if the benchmarks there are close to what you see on your laptop?

    Sounds like you are overheating.

One way to correct this is with the computer plugged in. you need to change your power settings
Go to Advanced Power settings, look for Graphics Power Plan or settings, look for, "Plugged in", and change the setting from active to passive.

    this should correct your issue.

hmm, i set everything according to you, but the issue still exists :-/ uninstalled the driver again. i already came to thonk there might be something with the touchpad, but it really only occurs of the synaptics driver is installed.

I have peculiar problems with the touchpad too. Only noticeable in chrome. The scrolling is smooth, but sometimes the page jumps to the top or bottom which irritates me while reading. No such problems in other applications. Does anyone have solution for this? Thanks in advance.

That fixed the jumping problem I guess. But the scrolling animation isnt silky. Anyway practicality over aesthetics. Thanks. Can you also tell me how to disable the two finger right clicking? And also make the black box disappear while scrolling in chrome.

Do you have smooth scroll enabled in Chrome?

The browser that I find has the smoothest scrolling is Opera, and now it uses the same engine as chrome so give that a shot if you want.

I'm not sure about the other stuff, sorry =(

The AW15 is very nice design, machine is pretty nice all round. The 1080p panel I have got with mine is top notch, no bleeding either.

Although the problems out of the box are horrible, one fan vibrating rattling through desk, dell diagnostic reported USB error, 2x BSOD just trying to run the pre-installed Steam on desktop with nothing else install right out of the box. Kernel-Failure reported in the event viewer.

Unrelated to the above, downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers and cant even overclock the 970M, just the memory only. What the hell it that all about?

What performance test did the run? Once I got my 240 watt, I noticed my passmark, 3dmark, and cinebench scores all went up. It's the cpu that's being throttled at least in my case but the 240 completely alleviates it.

It all depends on how much power you want when you are away from your amp. Since it sounds like money isn't a issue, go for the 980m =)

Wow, my 15 is still doing that ghosting effect. I have sent it in to the dell repair office, which replaced the display. Now a on-site tech replaced the motherboard and a second display, and the ghosting is still occurring. Dell is trying to get it sent back in to the repair location, but hopefully I can bully into sending me a new unit. What else could they possible replace?
