*OFFICIAL* Alienware 15 R1/R2 Owner's Lounge

Hi guys, I'm writing for a freeze problem that I had Yesterday. I was palying Witcher 3 and after 50 mins of game, during a combat the game freezed. Mouse and keyboard dind't work anymore and after 10 second the notebook turned off and restarted by itself. I don't think was a temps issue because after 30 min max temp was 84C and in 20 mins I don't think the temp can rise to 100C (I usually check temps and after 2 hours they are max 2C higher than they was after 30 mins).No blue screens, no errors. Only game blocked and a "vibration sound". After the restart Win 10 finished an update. After that update I try played again and after 5 mins max temps was 98C. I immediatly stopped the game and opened XTU and no more undervolt. The value was 0 (-0.150 before). I undervolted again and palyed for about 1 hours. No more freeze and temps under 90C. (88max). Any suggests? I'm a little bit concerned.

 

honestly it should be fine but you might have a problem with the paste or some other issue causing the system temps to rise. might try to reapply the paste. the paste should function identically in laptops contrary to other posters comment.. nothing different in the physics of a laptop or desktop other than the desktop gets hotter and uses more watts.

 

where do i get replacement for battery as i want to still keep this cool and quiet machine for the next 2 years until alienware change their policy to use generic realtek audio controller and bring back hdmi input back and change their current r3 design back to r1/r2

The heatsink pressure is important. the more pressure (to a certain level) the better the cooling.

 

If I am not satisfied with the performance, should I buy a new GPU or should I buy the external amplifier.
I own the 15 R2, gtx 965m i5 6300hq.

 

GPU is soldered on the Motheboard. Same also for the Cpu Ball grid array - Wikipedia

 

You can use AGA with 980/980Ti/1060/1070Ti to boost your GPU performance. You must use external monitor through AGA external ports like HDMI to get full power of GPU.

 

I just got my 5th motherboard and this time they gave me 4980HQ + 980M. Ran firestrike and I can see the cpu throttle to around 1.5ghz (75*C on both cpu and gpu).

 

I think you're eligible for new 15 r2/3 since the problem isn't fixed after 3 MB replacements. Ask @VICKYGAMEBOY

 

The problem is still not fixed almost 3 years after release of affected model. None should need to go through all this Throttle mess. They know very well they can't fix it. Why continue screw the customers? Give them the money back or newer model who maybe work as intended. Wasn't a cheep $400 lapbook.

 

Is anyone here glad they purchased an R2 instead of the R3 for the durable heatsink and no cooling problems? Ive had mine 7 months now bought on clearance new 999 on amazon stays cool as a cucumber

 

Is there any reason to switch from a R1 to a. R2?
R3 has a better video card, but since we just bought a house, I'm limited to the toys I am allowed to buy

Yes i only wish i could have gotten the gtx980 instead of 970 but the R3 at least the most powerful one has heating problems. And my 970 runs gtav on 4k setting without lag or stutter.

 

Thats what I have, a Gtx 970, 3Gb.
How much VRam does yours have?

It has 3gb of ram i wish it had a couple more gb but it works good and i use the whole 3gb in gtav.

 

Anyone install the A10 BIOS? I'm guessing it has the microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown? I installed it and my system felt sluggish. I had to revert back to A09.

 

Good to know that it's possible to play GTA V on a 970 with 3gb, I never tried, thought that it would be too sluggish.

@judal57 had same experience like yours, he downgraded to a09.

 

I dont know if the update has made it out yet but when it does your computer will lag some because it changes the was the intel code works, less efficient, more secure. I dont see myself updating to it myself i dont put anything personal on any windows machine! Ive never trusted windows

 

I disabled spectre protection of windows 10 and performance is more or less okay for me.

 

Should I install the latest 1.4.4 bios update? Is it safe to install it? Will it decrease CPU or ssd read/write perfomance?

 

Yes there's a little performance hit after the update.

 

For the record I use an Amplifier with a gtx 1080ti and can max games at 50 - 60fps in 4K to an external monitor.

 

You can use the AGA but your CPU is a bit of a bottleneck though. Games these days really benefit from hyperthreading able CPU's.

I highly doubt you will have more than 30~40fps in GTA5 at 4K with a 970. WHich is about as fast as a Geforce 680~770GTX.

 

How many USB 3.0 ports does the original Alienware 15 have?

I have just reinstalled my Alienware 15 and USB 3 drive only works on one of the ports (top left).

On the other ones, the drive is moving but it feels like it's not getting enough juice to run.

I can't blame the drive, because it works on my desktop + MacBook Pro.

I tried to find USB 3 drivers for Windows 10, but it appears that none exist.

Anyone else have this problem?

Also these are the USB drivers that I have installed on my system. Is it possible that there are some driver conflicts there?

Even 15 r2 has only one driver listed for USB3, but every port (3 of them) work at USB3 speeds.

 

So is my problem driver related or is it time to retire the laptop?

Try installing the driver again and recheck the connection. Try plugging your external hdd to thunder like icon over a usb port and see if it helps the HDD spin up.

 

I havent checked the fps lately but its around 45fps. But like i said no lag and stuttering.

 

Impossible unless you play on low settings. Those are desktop 970gtx numbers at high settings.

 

It's on ultra and it's in the red right at 3gb used. 45fps all day long and 65° temps.

 

I really really doubt that. Like I said those are numbers i see in any 970gtx desktop review. The numbers on the 970M version are much lower. Video recording or it didnt happen.

Aroind 30fps is what is shown on the notebookcheck site and that is the same as my score when I had the AW15R1.

 

Key word there is review, as in article you read! Im giving you real world data as i own a 15r2 echo with 4k screen and a gtx970m.

 

I had the 15r and 15r2 both with the 980m and 970m. Currently a 1070 and i had a desktop with a 970gtx. I kinda know what i am talking about. No offense but i never could replicate those numbers. Yes maybe at a quiet spot in game. But not in the city part by a long shot.

 

I have two m. 2 ssd and one hdd in my laptop. Ssd.s from samsung. One is nvme 256gb and other is 850 evo. Windows installed on nvme disk. The average temp of this ssd is ~55-59C degree. Is this temperature normal for this ssd? I think it seems hotter than it use to be. Also, i have installed windows on hdd. I have booted from hdd to test that nvme ssd. I copied ~15 gb single file and it reached 65c degree very quickly. Maybe for ~20 second. What do you guys think about this case? How can I reduce temp? I have already cleaned the laptop from dust with compressor...

 

I used 2 layers of 0.5mm thermal pads to reduce temps 5-10C. The temps are normal. Usually NVMe drive run 10C hotter than SATA SSD.

Hey there! So I've been looking for 15 R2 mobo schematics and cannot find anything... A beverage was spilled into the laptop and Dell wants over $900 to replace the motherboard (they apparently don't have the ability to troubleshoot and repair semiconductors...) So I have an SMD rework station and lots of patience - all I'm missing are those dang schematics... Anyone have them kicking around??

Well, the purpose of my message was not "spreading cracked games", instead I'd want to find somebody willing to test it, because some content was deleted to achieve such a size (8gb were deleted, no textures or soundtracks missing a priori.

Well, I could get a 2 week leave (I told you I had an appointment with a doctor). I'm not even ill, maybe a bit tired, but I think he understood me.
I'm getting bored with my office job. I've the impression the go around in circle. And yet I think I'm proficient. It wasn't like that 5 years ago. Maybe there will be no more jobs in 10 years who knows.
Only jobs in the countryside in fruit picking or during the harvest, for who are brave enough. Computers won't do this.
But computers literally stole the work. I'm spending half of the day doing nothing. If there was nobody around me I think I could spend hours reading this forum. I would get bored too. I've decided I'm doing two more year, then I will begin a training as a plumber. I'm not joking. Maybe it's hard, maybe it's dirty, but at least I would feel useful.
