what do you think of the 4K panel so far? How is it during browsing the internet, during navigating windows and during gaming downscaled to 1080p?

Let's try to keep a nice attitude here.

Users are encouraged to spread knowledge when needed. No need to get rude about it, CPU's aren't worth it :)

Now, as a general rule you can use specifically for current 6th gen CPUs on mobile platforms, 6700HQ is a fine CPU that is good enough for 60fps gaming, and will bottleneck only very high refresh rate gaming (120+) due to the very low speed of 3.1Ghz with 4 cores maxed.

6820HK is a good CPU only if you are interested in overclocking, and the machine actually can take it. You can get a very nice boost in speed, useful for high refreshrates in gaming. As confirmed with other machines, using the same CPU and GPU, just changing the speed from 3.1ghz to 4ghz gave a 25% framerate boost in battlefield 4 multiplayer maxed 64man battle. (80+s vs 110s framerate). Obviously both CPUs are adequate for gaming, 6820HK is just a more specialized solution for users that need/want more.

Looks like they changed their website again. Seems like you can only get the GSync panel with the 1070 now. No more 1060 option. Its also more expensive from what I can see.

Would be better if they replaced the blind monkies that do QC with robots.

Not to impressed, its "muddy" even compared to other matte displays. At least mine is.

Suggestion between IPS vs TN G-Sync panel ? I watched few youtube videos on the comparison and most of them say the colors are washed out on TN panels and doesn't give deep dark and grey colors.

It depends on what you want. The TN 120HZ will be much smoother and crisp viewing experience with shorter response time (and 100 nits brighter). While the IPS will be more colorful/color accurate, and a higher contrast ratio.

If you do photo and video work, I'd reccomend the IPS.

If gaming is a higher priority get the G-sync

6700hq is one of Intel's history's worst low entry i7. Fully locked down!! Not even 2 extra bin with turbo boost added as earlier model. You are fully locked down with 3.1 GHz on all 4 cores.

In a world of dual core i7s, and even i7s based on the Core M architecture, I'd hardly call the 6700HQ 'low entry', nor its 'worst'.

And yet, 3.1GHz is still plenty enough for the majority of modern gaming, so there's no need to be dismissing it.

Picked up AW 15 yesterday with 6700HQ, GTX 1060, 120hz G-sync, 256GB ssd, 16ram, 99battery, and Killer 1535 for $1502 before taxes with veteran's discount. I was hoping I can use TenOff on top like some of the posters here but representative couldn't help me :(

I'm little worried on the ship date since I have a flight to Asia on the 28th and won't be back for a month. It will suck to return to a AW15 with heating and screen bleed problem when I'm passed by refund date.

Oh well. Let us rather say low entry 4 core i7. Who is talking about that you only use a *Gaming* laptop to just gaming? You can use almost anything for gaming. Even the worse performing 6300hq work just fine for gaming as well. But that does not mean this weaker processor is very good in other sorts of use aka processor intensive task

I would never suggest a gaming laptop can only be used for gaming; I do a lot of AI simulation work that will typically max out the CPU, so I'm definitely in the camp of benefiting from a faster CPU. However most people, even on these forums, would be mostly using the laptop for gaming (or at least, that's the most intensive task they'll be doing), for which the 6700HQ is definitely adequate. Hence why I object so much when people are so critical of the 6700HQ; for most users, it's fine.

Just picked up the 15R3 with 1070, GSYNC display, 8gigs of ram, and 1TB normal HD for $1838 after tax. I hope the 12% ebates goes through, and I hope this unit comes with the heating issue already fixed. Final cost should be around ~$1400 with the ebates and dell gift card cash back. Just hoping that all of that pulls through lol

edit: the 12% appears to be applied to the market price, and not the discounted price. Even better!

Whats the FHD option on the 15 R3, is it as grainy/muddy as the 4K screen is? Has anyone gotten a keyboard and touch pad which does not seem flimsy and cheap? I remember on the XPS13 I had to have them replaced 3 times before they finally managed to put in a keyboard and a touchpad with at least decent quality. Having been a few years on a MacBook Pro, you really get picky about the quality of the hardware.

Excellent Price for that configuration. I configured a very similar config for 1643.39, and without the SSD.(just the 1TB HDD) I did go for the fast RAM, and Windows 10 Pro though.

Has anyone paid with Bitcoin before? They seem to not be able to figure that out to well.

Random question since thermals have been a hot (!) topic lately.

Can anyone with more knowledge on thermals help me out here?

TDP of the GTX 1060 is meant to be just below what the 970M was, which was ~100.
    The i7-6700hq has 45 TDP.

Why then, are we seeing more problems with CPU heating than GPU heating?

Well previous posts said that the only reason you need an HK cpu is for 120fps gaming and ironically you can not get the HK cpu on the 120hz display basically if your buying the gsync model right now your going to bottleneck and if you buy a 60hz screen with the HK your over paying when the non K series cpu can get the job done.

If your going non gsync for reasons such a battery life you are best off waiting for the next gen cpus to hit as you will get even better battery life when watching videos as you will still be able to use integrated gpu for 10bit and web based video which currently requires powering over to the nvidia gpu to handle the load.

Well, you can still attach an external monitor, so hk can be good if you want that option but not a gsync monitor with 120fps (and conserve battery when on the go)

Are you sure that the current igp cannot handle youtube videos for example? and the geforce will run when i watch a youtube video? thats sad if thats the case...

Yea, depending on the settings I easily get 120fps. I subsampled the graphics in FFIX (1440p to 1080p) and was getting around 120fps with gsync enabled. **** looked amazing.

Temps killed the system pretty quickly though. Getting my new one tomorrow.

    Hello,

I'm interested in this Alienware 15 but I have seen its quite big for a 15" laptop..
I'm an airline pilot and I have a looot of time to kill in hotels so I will be gaming a lot on this laptop. I was looking at the 15 with a 6700HQ, GTX1070 and G sync screen to use it when I'm out and at home, but Im a bit worried about the portability..
OR other option, the 13" with a 1060 to play when I'm out and a graphic amplifier with a big screen for home.

Is the 15" ok to travel with in a suitcase or cabin bagage ? or for the 2nd option, is it realy possible to play games like witcher 3, BF1, WoW on a 13" screen.. ?

    Thanks for your advice

(BTW, anybody here from Switzerland who tried to contact Dell to get a discount code ? their online chat is never working and when you phone them up they redirect you to a local retailers...)

I dont think a 3.4kgs laptop would be hard to carry. Sure its a bit bigger than usual 15" laptops, but not much! Its a few centimeters bigger then a macbook, and 1.5kg heavier. So the main question is the weight i guess? but that souldnt be a problem...

I would not like to play on a 13inch screen tho. Its manageable, but its not worth it i think...

Its all personal opinion tho :D

"hardware-accelerated decoding and encoding of 10-bit HEVC/H.265 video streams and decoding of 8-bit VP9 streams."

Currently you would need gpu acceleration for high res VP9 or you would use a lot of cpu decode. Kaby Lake with its support for VP9 will have much lower power usage for youtube on the go.

Hey guys, I just got my 15r3 6820 today. I try to run OCCT and its fail, then I try the support assist it pass all the test but the thermal is disgusting. Should I repaste? it seems has uneven heatsink (I ordered from 9 Nov). What should I do? I'm really tired with them, which I have returned 17r4 that with some issues then I turn to 15r3....but as expected no issues had fixed....WTF Dell

Also I order this laptop at Ireland Dell website...and the plug they gave me is EU plug WTF again

I might have more than a book soon. We'll see =D.
Pretty certain it can and will, though not as easily for 60fps (unless you're playing some of the new AAA CPU-devouring monstrosities of "optimization" they call games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided). But with all the CPU load that everything needs for no reason these days expect this to change in the coming year or so =D.
