Just got off the phone with a Dell rep and she told me that the product may go EOL and that it may therefore never be delivered to you o_O

They were anyways never able to provide any relevant detail but this is a new benchmark in ridiculous; why would a company make a recently launched product go EOL and that too with their website still taking orders for the same product...

Very well said mate. I'm actually curious how HP will pull through if they started to up their game in the higher end gaming laptop segment.

    Thanks for sharing.

Could you run OCCT for at least 30 Minutes and post up the screen shot?

Also keep in mind that you're likely running on bios 1.0.8 which are bringing limitations, hence the temps you are seeing.

If you are happy with the way everything is then that's all that matters. :)

There are plenty of 6700HQ's that run 90C's out of the box with wPrime, OCCT or any CPU intensive programs / apps.

The units that I have and work with are all 6820HK's as that's what we've been mainly focusing on.

Just a quick tip. Try undervolting your gpu and if you like, disable turbo boost on the cpu.
On my asus gl702vm (i7 6700, gtx1060, 1080p IPS 17") I'm getting sub 70c GPU temps and sub 70c CPU temps after hours of gaming.

    occt 30 min

@Ioverdose but the performance of the computer is the same without the turboboost? i guess you get much lower fps.

I don't really mind for temps as long as they don't climb to 90º.

    I will keep testing.

I placed an order last Friday for this model on Dell's website. Still shows as Pre-Production and I am hoping there won't be any issues with overheating as I have read really good reviews about the product.

    6820HQ with GTX1070
Just casual gaming here. I'll probably use it for work too... mostly coding but occasionally 3D modelling too.

I do play games, just not 24/7 :p Got to work too :)

I went for the 4K option just for sake of it. I will be using it a lot with my external Dell 24 inch 1080p due to be upgraded to Gsync later in 2017.

no it's undervolted but not underclocked, the clock speeds remain the same so i haven't noticed any performance loss in games
the cpu losing turboboost however might cause cpu based performance to drop but i guess it depends what you're using the laptop for

Fwiw I turned off turboboost in throttlestop for the time being and temps are definitely manageable.

I have 97 C stock settings in occt.

I undervolt and turn off turbo and the processor Max's at 2.6 and the fans barely turn on now which is awesome. I haven't run a stress yet with turbo off though.

For day to day use it's definitely passable and manageable until dell tech comes and fixes the damn heatsink. It's those last 600 mhz that create all the heat it seems.

But there will certainly be a drop off in fps for intensive games I'm sure. But for now at least I know I'm not cooking the CPU.

Almost missed the delivery guy but got the laptop just as he was leaving.
    This was for a 15R3 6700HQ GTX1070 1080p IPS.
The laptop had glue spots on the chassis and some flecks on the screen but it was easy to clean up.
As reported in other places, the backspace key isn't quite right. It slightly gets stuck, clicks louder and is harder to press than the other keys.
The screen looks pretty good and there wasn't any lightbleed or bezel separation.
I've just started stress testing but so far, so good.
After 30 minutes, OCCT is reporting 68-71C max and averages 61C on all 4 cores running at 3.1GHz (20C ambient, no repaste, no undervolt).

I fixed the backspace key by popping it off, cleaning and remounting it back on.
It was annoyingly fiddly to do but the key works properly now.
After checking in a completely dark room, I did notice some backlight bleed in the bottom corners when looking at off angles.
When looking right at the laptop, it was barely noticeable.
Running OCCT/Furmark together hit 90C and started to throttle; not sure if this was a safety setting or maybe the BIOS.
Undervolting by 150mV and running OCCT/Furmark together got me max 77C with 71C average and GPU at 69C.
I'm still testing things but it looks to be a keeper.

    hello guys how are you?

i just got my new alienware 15 R3 and already have some problems. I'll try to be as clear as i can. Let's go.

im having some drops/stutter (i guess this is it) when i try to do multiple tasks, such as play a music in youtube and open other sites at the same time.

And im for that, every video/music i try to watch, i have a freezing/noise on the video and music. Like an interference.

I did a full hardware test (pressing F12 when restarting note) and it says it is all 100% working. All drivers are updated also.

It is almost impossible to watch a full Netflix film withouut stuttering/freezing the video...it is preety sad.

While researching on the web, i found a topic in dell community support (Brazil version) about a user that has a Inspiron Gaming 7559 that also has problem in the sound. The discussions of the users conclusion was that DELL SUPPORT ASSIST and DELL SUPPORT ASSIST AGENT were the problem, and some users said that after unistalling it, the problems stopped.
I removed both, but the problem persists

I would like to know how could i fix the processing problem of my notebook, that is affecting the sound, freezing it (it is like a frame freezing, something like that, when overheating - but my note isnt ho), because the notebook is brand new and for the config (intel 6820k, gtx 1070 and 16gbram) it is not to have this kind of problm.

It's gonna take a while for the bad QC'd machines to work their way through the system.

These last 2 good ones are the first I have seen, at all, so they are significant.

Hopefully the trend will be toward good ones out-numbering bad ones :)

It's enough to be aware, find new production units, or be ready to return / RMA / tweak it per usual :)

There are likely sooo many bad ones out there "running" in stealth mode, ready to rear their ugly side as soon as the owner finally uses it to game or benchmark.

That's why it's so important to test a new machine right out of the box for problems.

Gonna be a lot of "cheap" used "bad" units out there to snap up, bend and re-paste for a brand new cool laptop :)

Sure thing. Can you PM me your discord?

It looks like they doubled up on the paste as I've been noticing a change with the newer (recently shipped) units that I've been working on.

What a bunch of donkeys. Don't fall for their stupidity. Demand what you want brother...

The heat sink issue is not something they can just fix without a complete redesign of not only the heat sink, but also the mother board. However, not sure if you've seen the temps that the members have been reporting after a repaste and fix? My core differential is ~3C, sometimes even better. There are many with close differentials as well. A fresh one off the skillet is @richiec77 with darn near even temps so despite the original issue...if one does a little work under the hood, it really makes this system a complete package.

    :p

Very true. There's only so much that they can do and that is making sure to use a different thermal paste, however, it has been evident that they are doubling up on the paste as short cut in hopes to address this issue. For those that don't over clock and run stock, this might be ok....however, for those who do overclock and tax the CPU and GPU, it's just dry out waiting to happen.

Always rooting for positive change....I'm glad that they are listening and we can hopefully count on the next revision being a lot better from the lessons learned with the current units.

Actually Dell can / could do quite a bit, up to and including what you do, fix it :)

QA could come up with better procedures for assembly, paste and application, final tested affixing of the heat plate torque to make it even across the contact, and then QC test the result with an eye toward finding failures before they go out the door.

I've seen it done well, but it takes time to get the QA and QC set up to catch all the problems, and re-work processes to fix all the exceptions before they go out the door - don't forget to re-test again after re-work.

We hadn't had any good reports before the last 2 in since yesterday, so I hope we continue to see more good out of the box samples reported :)

Well said and that is what makes me cringe me the most, with all these folks having that rotten egg sprayed with perfume to make the owner think that it's a good egg.

    @hmscott, that's exactly right...stealth mode = bios 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 ... Bait and Switch = Dell and Switch.

    It's just crazy...
