I connected de laptop 15 r3 with the 1070 to a 4k samsung ks9000 and it should allow me to set the color as 10bit, im using hdmi 2.0 cable and in the nvidia control panel doesnt allow me to change bit deph.
With the ps4 pro i dont have any issue with that.
Any idea? It should output 10bit pascal series right?
-
Send me a screenshot of that nvcp

nvidia gtx support 10bit colors?

If i order a normal nongsync panel laptop, can i use my gsync monitor with it? my concern is that with optimus, the minidisplay port is connected to the intel igp so no gsync support with external monitor? Somebody tried this?
Also, the trackpad uses synapsys drivers or is it a windows accurate one? -
Yes. But not in opengl accelerated applications such as photoshop.
No, the HDMI and mDP is still connected to the dGPU even if you are running in optimus mode (you can switch to dGPU mode to hand over the laptop screen to the dGPU) -

Can the 1070 + 120Hz display switch to the intel GPU? It may be due to not having all the alienware stuff installed, but pressing "Fn + F7" doesn't prompt anything. I mean, I feel like everything should work fine regardless of it being a dedicated GPU, but I am just curious before I go installing that bloat haha
-
No The G-Sync panels are connected directly to dGPU (1070/1060) so optimus and the intel on board gpu are never usedilluMinniti likes this.
-
Yes but correct me if I'm wrong he can as asked connect to a G-Sync enabled monitor over DP and still use G-Sync? as he will be using the G-Sync module in his ext monitor connected to the lapto GPU?
well it said G-sync was working in Nvcp when i tried with my AW15 FHD (1060) -
Hey Guys.
So I recently bought this laptop, exact config is:
I7 6700HQ
GTX 1060 6GB
16 GB DDR4
128GB SSD & 1TB HDD
So I have an issue with the laptop and have no idea if I am the only person to struggle with this, seems like I am. The current issue is that when the computer boots and runs from the Intel HD 530 then it looks like a Christmas tree on the screen as pixels all over the place are firing on and off at random placed.
Best way to see this is in the video I made:
Some things I have noticed, this happens with the device is running from both the Intel HD 530 and the Nvidia GTX 1060, when I use FN + F7 to switch to the discrete GPU only, then this does not happen once in Windows, but it always happens during boot up, regardless of the mode that the GPU is in, as can be seen in the video.
I have run diagnostics tests on the unit as provided by Dell, I have run the built in screen test by pressing D + Power (works normally here) and I have also done FN + Power and run those tests, all tests pass and the laptop works fine otherwise, this is the only issue that I have and it is almost impossible to do anything on the screen when this happens. Also, this mostly happens when the screen is displaying black.
I am not sure if I need to say anything else? I have uninstalled the Intel Drivers and the problems remains there, I have also updated the Nvidia drivers, but the Nvidia card is not the problem here. It might be a cable issue between the HD 530 and the LCD?
Any help would be awesome. -
Did you have same results "on power brick" as on "Battery only" ? If that won´t appear under battery you can use another wall plug (different room) and give it a try?
Which BIOS version you currently have installed?
aVa -
Hi.
I have BIOS 1.0.8 and I have tried what you suggested and it seems to be the same regardless of whether I am on power or battery and in a different room or the same. -
Try messaging @AlienwareTech here https://twitter.com/AlienwareTech

@sarou just found this quick repast guide for the 15R3 :
Thanks mate

Nice! Much faster to do. Will look into doing that next time.

Hey folks, I even tried to place a new order for AW15R3 via mail but Dell told me, I cannot because there´s currently no capacity left
(or is that in cause of the "issues" ? I mean, if they´ll get my cash now and produce and ship in Jan2017 i mean ... ?? not their problem or?)
*rofl* omg .... no waiting for 2017
hopefully for Kabylake, else: fork why they won´t have my bugs to build a Laptop...
Regards

Was just going to post it here as well. No problem. I hope everyone sees how simple it is to do. Plus, you'll notice I saved some extra dollars (~$100) by installing Ballistix 8GB ram and a Crucial 275GB m.2 SSD myself.Aman Krishna likes this.

Considering they are having a hard time producing orders that are currently in queue, this is probably to avoid pissing people off further. Lol

My order from 09/12/2016 was delayed for at least until mid-January due to "shortage in a component" that they were not able to reveal for my 15 R3 6820 1070 4K Alienware.
After reading about the overheating issues, even though they have taken measures now by applying better quality paste and new heat strips, I decided to cancel my £2K order altogether.
Tough luck. Maybe now I will actually get a Kaby Lake computer in a few months and ditch my 6 year old laptop. Desktop or laptop, not sure yet.Last edited: Dec 20, 2016 -
I got a similar model but with the 1080p IPS display and it is supposedly built and on it's way from the manufacturer in Asia. Ordered 10/12/16
-
Thank you. I prefer not to disassemble motherboard
-
People that method is only for the 15r3 with a gtx 1060, so folks with gtx 1070 u need to disassemble the system, flip the mobo and remove the fan connectors first. Then u can remove the heatsink and repaste.
@nravanelli pls edit the video add the warning, otherwise people will end up damaging their laptop and blame u for the bad video guideSimplyJ3sse likes this. -
I asked Intel if it's true ... And they confirmed

How is it that there are still such huge core differentials? I'm assuming the thermal paste is as thick as 0.1mm, so shouldnt that reduce the heat differences if the problem was because of the thermal pads on the choke?
What was the configuration for this example? And are these temps considered acceptable? -
I may have made the paste a little too thick, this might be the problem still. I might go the liquid metal route next to see how it changes things. This is my 4th time taking it all apart, I can do it with my eyes closed now lolChrischank and selvedge like this.

Update:
Repasted my personal unit. Finally.
In addition to my repaste etc...After 7.5 Hours (total) of messing around with the heat sink assembly with a ton of testing, balancing, trial and error to get it just right, here are the results.
It's clear that with the uneven heat sink issues addressed (not meaning from the factory) on the 15R3/17R4, the core differentials can be resolved to be as good as +/- 1C.
More tests to come...OCCT etc...hmscott, Philosobyte, SimplyJ3sse and 2 others like this. -
Hi, first i want to say thanks for all theese informations. I love to read this forum and i learned a lot of things about the alienware 15r3. Mine also had the temp. issue, repasting didnt work, seems that the chooper was way to uneven to get good results. I was only reading here but now i rly have a question on this topic.
I had the 1070 and there was no need to flip the mobo and remove fan connectors. We just removed the small srews on the top of the fans and so it was easy to dissembly the heatsink.
P.S. sorry for the bad English, its not my native language
Kalen likes this. -
Thanks for sharing and no worries, your English is better than most native speakers.
The reason I like to remove the entire heat sink assembly + motherboard is so that I can work my mod in balancing it. With half of the heat sink still on the frame along with the motherboard still attached to the chassis, it's hard to gauge for optimal results.hmscott likes this. -
Thanks mate
Your work is awesome, thank you for all kind of videos, tutorials and speaking with Dell...i ordered a second 15r3 9th of December, so hopefully the new thermal pads are used by theese *** guys in China
just in case, i ordered some new pads, lm and thermal paste to give it a second try...
My configuration was with the i7 6700hq, so with undervolting (-175mV worked stabil) i got max. Temps. 80°C in xtu stress test (i think its because of only using the cpu, thats easier to handle for the "new designed, great, wonderful coolingsystem"
)
But when playing bf1 they climb up to 99°C.
So do you guys recommend to switch back to the older BIOS 1.02 when i get my new Alien?
P.S. i wrote you an email iunlock, message was send through the aw-community.com Forum (december 7th) would be fantastic if you can read this and give me an answer.

Strange, but with new NVIDIA drivers FPS in GTA 5 are below 40, while with original driver was always higher than 60
-
Hey guys. Does anyone know if there is a cable that sits between the Intel HD 530 and the Screen? Is there somewhere that I can check that cable since I am having some weird issues when using the Intel HD 530. Issues that seem like a loose cable.
-
If there is the other gpu is using the same one.
-
Is that the new heatsink? Since when did the fan come apart from the heatsink?
-
With GTX 1060 only, extra work is needed for GTX 1070.
-
I was about to say I have taken the 15 apart a lot and they were always connected. Lol
-
i7 6820HK + GTX1070
note that the heatsink is running with an older revision of thermal pads, newer ones should have lower temps
and no, the picture I posted is worst case scenario, normally the temps shouldn't be that highselvedge likes this. -
Don't we normally gauge the temps by looking at the average temps instead of maximum temps since max temps are just few seconds spikes anyway?
-
Holy ****, you waited 2 months?
I only ordered 12/06...and my 12/22 EDD now updated to 12/29. -
I think he meant December 10th.
I ordered mine December 13th and the EDD just updated from the 22nd to the 27th -
You're right, I forget the rest of the world does dates differently.
edit;
on the phone with order cancellation
"there is a part that is not available and has no ETA for replenishment. You may not receive your system until March or April"
She can't tell me what part it is, exactly.Last edited: Dec 21, 2016 -
I had a conversation with someone from Dell today about mine being delayed as well.
My original EDD was today. A couple of days ago it got updated to 12/28.
The order support rep told me that my system is on a production hold due to parts shortage. I'm hoping it's because they're waiting on updated heatsinks for installation. Anyway, I complained about how the system is supposed to be a Christmas gift and their ordering system STILL says 4-6 business days for delivery of newly ordered systems and she gave me a $100 coupon. Combined with the 10% off deal I used and my 2% corporate discount, it has me saving a significant amount of money, so I didn't cancel the order. Once it comes in, I'll use the $100 coupon to order accessories instead. -
Did you order yours with a 4K panel or 6820HK?
I'm iclined to believe the culprit is as other's have suspected and the 'parts shortage' is related to the 6820HK. With Kaby lake quad core CPU's shipping in January I think i'll probably wait another month or two to see what happens. At the very least to let AW get their act together.
I've been buying their laptops for the better part of 10 years and, I can't say I've seen anything like this before between the overheating systems and constant delays. -
Neither.
My exact configuration is: i7 6700HQ, GTX 1070, 1080 IPS screen, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD.
I'd guess that it's being held up by either the updated heatsink (with the adjusted sizes on the thermal tape) or the SSD (NAND shortage, maybe?), or the power supply bricks. A guy on Reddit with the exact same configuration as me ordered after I did and already received his system. The only difference is that he's in Australia and I'm in Canada. -
Try calling in and say that you're in a hurry due to (insert very important reason).

Hello everyone, noob here. I recently purchased the 15 r3 with this config:6820hk-gtx 1070-16gb ram- UHD display- 1tb hd (no ssd, figured I'd just add a 960 evo soon). I've had nothing but minor problems with dell about this.
First, they said I would get "dell dollars" or something like that, but they didn't email the code until 6 weeks and 2 phone calls later.
They also said I would receive a free copy of GoW4, and I never received it even after 5 calls about it.
The laptop also shipped with the sound completely screwed up. It took 3 different tech support phone calls and a total of 4-5 hours on the phone to fix it completely.
It also has minor heating issues. When put under stress tests or reasonably high demand, it operates fine. When I really get after it though (titanfall 2 with all settings completely maxed out) Core 0 does reach a max in the mid-high 90's. Alienware is sending on-site support to fix the heatsink and repaste, I anticipate it working fine after that condsidering it isn't nearly as bad as some of the heating issues I've read about here.
Ultimately, I just want to know if this a typical alienware experience, or even a typical high-end gaming laptop experience. I'm new to the gaming laptop world, and it was just shocking for me to spend the amount of money I did-less than 2 months ago-and have such issues. Granted, they're all relatively minor and correctable, but seriously, WTF? Is this just how it is with dell/alienware? Is MSI like this? Asus? -
I have owned a few laptops before and never had issues. Went Alienware this time around since it is my dream machine. Out of the box I have issues with the Intel HD 530, no where else have I read that other people have the same issue, but when using the integrated HD 530 it looks like a Christmas tree on the screen with random pixels lighting up different colours all over. No idea if it is faulty hardware or a cable. Best part is I live in South Africa and imported this thing. Only to have it be faulty out of the box.
So my experience thus far is not great but from what I have read, there are a ton of people with issues with this laptop. At least Dell is trying to engage people and fix stuff so +1 to them for that. But as for me, I have no idea what to do. -
Damn, that sucks.I guess you could say they're trying to fix it, but its been a huge pain in the ass every step of the way for me to get them to do what should have already been done when I purchased it.
Does anyone know what the secondary market for them is? I felt like I went a little beyond what I needed in a laptop (or what I could spend) and these issues have me feeling some serious buyer's remorse. I would be selling it in good working condition as long as the repaste/heat sink repair goes as it should. I looked on ebay, guess it's still too new, no used 15 r3's on there -

Grrrumble
My unit is at the repair facility. I inquired today about status
"
We have received the computer at the repair facility.
It seems like there is a part on back order in order to repair it.
I will investigate this issue further and provide you with an update in the next 24 hours"
Kind regards,
