I used to have a 4k 15 r2 and now have a 15 r3 120hz.
The tn panel was better than I expected. Viewing angles are fine and games play really well on it. I don't think you would be disappointed with it.

Did you use any particular software to find this out or were going by the build date on the sticker on the drive?
The Samsung PM961 is actually not that bad drive performance wise - but it is pot luck which one you receive. -
Ordered, my estimated delivery is 31st of March though.. which already feels like a lifetime to wait

So I've been having my laptop plugged in 24/7 since I got it (sometime before christmas) and HWinfo is showing battery wear level is 2.4%. It's been showing that for a while now though, so do I need to unplug my laptop for it to update the wear level, or is it just not wearing down for some reason? My 15R3 is also 100% charged the entire time too. Tbh I don't care about the wear as I have 4 years of warranty, but I know some people were worried about their wear levels so I am curious if there is reason mine hasn't dropped in weeks/a couple months.
-
Mine has shown 2.4% since I first turned it on!

I remember someone saying theirs wore down by like 4.8%. but for both of ours to be worn down by 2.4% pretty much since we've had them, idk seems fishy. Especially since mine has been 100% charged for about 90 days -
Got my 15 today! 1 day early, nice. Very happy with it so far (it turned on). Just installing some games now while I search this thread for all the programs u need to get to test it out. I know I have read it so many times but when ya looking for it you can never find. This thread needs a sticky of that crap!
-
Ps. Battery haven't 4 years of warranty!!

This any good?

Yea it is lifetime! lol
-

Well its 4 years of accidental damage. To me I consider that 4 years for the battery too
-
Yeah, ask for a free replacement battery after a year
Say the battery burned up due the battery boost
Or the performance isn't as advertised without the battery. You should be well covered.

Nah I don't mean it like that lol. After-all, whenever I tried to game on battery, even if League of Legends, I'd get like 1-1.5hrs of gameplay in before having to charge. Sure I could allow it to downclock itself while gaming @30fps but I'd just go on a console at that point. Need 60 + ReShade -
I have seen more and more owners have battery drain with the power cord in the wall when the machine is in fully load. The battery will wear out faster than needed and people should claim a new battery before a year. Otherwise you all will be screwed. Dellienware have 1 year warranty for the battery. Or do as I said in previous post

Yep. After replacing battery it is covered for 3-4 months. I asked tech support guys.Papusan likes this.

That's what I always thought. Is there a better program than HWinfo to check battery wear levels? I'm just curious, I doubt in 2 months it didn't wear at all being plugged in 24/7. But my room is usually kept pretty cool so maybe that could be why too -
By battery boost, I assume you mean the quick charging option in bios?
-
If the battery drain during use with or without quick charging I don't know. The battery should not be drained anyway. Dell introduced this hybrid power tech early 2015 for the first Aw Echo models. After the same recipe as MSI.
Edit: @illuMinniti You can use Aida64 and Hwmonitor as well.Last edited: Mar 17, 2017illuMinniti and SimplyJ3sse like this. -

Playing any type of games on battery regardless of setting makes games look terrible
-
illuMinniti Notebook Evangelist
Wrong. Its based on settings. If you have it set to power saver or battery mode in the Windows Power options or Nvidia, it will look terrible. If you have the power settings equal, it looks equal, but you won't get much timeSimplyJ3sse likes this. -
And if your hardware draw eg. +200W. Will firmware allow that power been pulled from battery? Or let's say even better... laptops with SLI graphics and +500w from battery?
-
Then you have no idea because regardless of setting it never plays the same period.
-
illuMinniti Notebook Evangelist
Well if you can prove what I said wrong, go for it. However I can run a game like Resident Evil 7 Maxed out with the same playable FPS on battery as I can plugged in. While I have no experience with said laptops with SLI drawing near 500W like Papusan was saying (my 1070 + 7700HQ draws like 120W, so 500W is a bit ridiculous to begin with), can't comment on it cuz I will never own one.
But for you, cn555ic to say any type of game on battery looks terrible, that's just 100% wrong lol. How do I know the battery drains in 1-1.5hrs? Because I've ran RE7 from battery and it was the same experience both on and off AC.SimplyJ3sse likes this. -
Well feel free to show us what your battery settings are in the Nvidia GeForce Experience app if you believe that he's wrong. It's all based on settings.

Literally the first thing I disabled in GeForce Experience was battery boost haha. 2nd being shadowplay. Shadowplay is actually very useful though, just don't have a use for it atmSimplyJ3sse likes this. -
Hey guys my 13 R3 is coming this Tuesday, and I was just wondering if using my old 240 watt adapter from my 15 R2 would cause any problems with this computer? I know the 13 uses a 180 watt.
-
What a great time to be a pc enthusiast/gamer. Purchased a laptop last year, returned a week later as the 940m gpu wasn't providing a satisfying experience. Told myself to be patient, and get what you really want. Finally saved enough to get the system I've needed for a long time. 15 r3, 60Hz FHD, 6820, 1070, 16GB, 128GB ssd/ 1 TB hd. I found an 256GB evo 960 PM 961
OEM ($120, what a deal) to replace the boot drive with. Any particular issues migrating the os? I've purchased Paragon migrate, and have it installed on my desktop, so might just use that, or the Samsung software. Looks like some feel that a clean os install is the way to go, but kind of wanted to keep some of the proprietary alienware controls. Any advice on setting up would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to put the os and a few often played games on the Samsung, and use the factory 128GB drive for additional games. Will eventually add an 850 ssd for file/media storage.Last edited: Mar 18, 2017 -
Try a game like GTA5 or Rise of the tomb raider on high settings and play it on battery. Let me know how it plays!
-
What are your specs? The 1060 models use the 180w and the 1070 models use the 240w.

Hey guys it's kind of urgent ,
I have 15 r3 I bought ssd m.2 850 evo , I inserted it inside , used Samsung migration to clone the windows from the hdd , I can't see the new ssd in the windows explorer but still Samsung migration found it , when I go to bios there is no option to change the boot from one disk to another , when I removed the hdd the ssd works perfectly!!! I don't know how I can use both ( I'm not thinking about formatting the hdd I want to keep the original windows there ! ) any solutions ? -
illuMinniti Notebook Evangelist
Definitely will. I already have GTA 5 installed, but its on a second SSD from a previous Windows install so its being problematic and not wanting to run (likely something with Rockstar social club). But I'll get back to this when I gt a chance and will post info. But js RE7 is by no means a light game like 6 and older.. 7 can't maintain 60fps @ 4K without lowering settings. I could problably load up RE6 in 8K maxed and get closer to 60 lol -
OCCT with a -150 undervolt I get 72 max, usually sticks around mid 60's.
However, gaming (only tried Witcher 3 on max settings) I generally average around mid 70's and max 82.
Should I repaste? I never done it before and to be honest I would be very afraid of messing things up.
In Ireland, room temps were around 22-24 or so.
Edit: it's i7 7700, 1070 card.Last edited: Mar 20, 2017 -
HI,
My battery wear level is showing 5.4%.
Is that good or bad?

If you're seeing within one or two months of usage then its bad. Otherwise its good.Sphinx likes this.

Hey AW family
i got a 13r3 and i'm really happy with the device, but i'm still a little bit uncertain about the size. Now i'm struggling to give the 15r3 a chance.
I read a lot of this thread here and about the problems with the 15 r3.
Are this problems sorted by AW or they still exists?
- problems with cpu temperatue, and huge temperature differences between the cores? Or i need only repaste the system and the problem is gone?
- problem with the light on the edge of the display? dont know the exactly word for this...lightcourt maybe?
- high noise development under full load? louder then a 13r3?
One more question, in a test one notebookcheck they got it with a ( i7-7700HQ) and if i want to order there is only the (i7-6700HQ)....they downgrade it?
And which display you would take, this? The 15,6"-Full HD-Display (1.920 x 1.080), 120 Hz, TN + WVA, , 400 cd/m², NVIDIA G-SYNC ?
And how big is the performance difference between the 13/1060GTX and the 15/GTX 1070?
best regards and thanks for any answere in advance, because i need to send the 13er tomorrow back and need to decide, stay on 13r3 or give the 15r3 a try. Sorry for so mutch question >.< i did read to mutch horror storys haha....

I will try and help :
Might be pot luck, but mine is about 4 weeks old - had no issues so far - temp seem to reach max around 70 degrees under load.
I think you might be referring to light bleed - Depends on what you are using it for i guess. Some have more bleed than others and depends on how much it bothers you. Yes on boot on a black screen - you may see some - once booted into windows and playing games, you probably would have forgotten all about it.
I dont know to be honest - I have never had 13 r3 - my guess would be fans will be bigger - hence a little louder under full load?
The new range have the 7th gen CPU - earlier ones had the 6th gen.
I had a 15 R2 with a 4k UHD display - yes it was good, i personally felt it was wasted on a 15" laptop. Games looked no different to me in FHD or UHD - so when I got the R3 - i went for the 120hz this time as I play more games now. However - you can always hook up an external monitor if required. (i dont have the space for one at the moment).
i think its about 20% faster - always go the fastest GPU you can get - you are better off in the long run.
There are some reviews online somewhere the 13/15/17 are all lined up next to each other - so you can see the size comparison. I will add the link if I can find it.
Hope the above helps.

If the prices for 15 and 13r3 are same, go for 15 r3 because you have a bigger card and more thermal headroom. I think 15 is well balanced in terms of performance and portability which is perfect for university.Stevie LA likes this.
-
Also, I forgot the add - check the weight difference in the laptops - especially if you are travelling back and forth etc.
-
I mean @Stevie LA is still completing his education so in the end, weight difference isn't too much of a concern. I carry it in a briefcase and honestly, I find it difficult to carry and move around using public transport but at the end of the day you get more ports and an HDD to store music, movies and archive lot of games.
@Stevie LA: If portability is of utmost importance then @Sphinx is right. In the end it all depends on one point, do you want a PC that'll last until univ. or otherwise.Stevie LA likes this. -
Hi Sphinx, hi Vasudev,
thanks you @Sphinx for the detailed answer! I know I could have found everything in this thread, but the opinions are simply so divided and me was quickly overwhelmed at some point.
@Vasudev, youre right, i think at the end of a day i be more happy with a larger display and the space for a lot of films and games.
I'm travelling with my car so the weight is a point, but its not THE point.
Thank you both again, you helped me a lot , i will give the 15 r3 a try and we will see how it fits to me!
You will surely hear more of me again!

You can turn on stealth mode on alienware so that nobody notices your PC, I do it sometimes on my PC while I'm at the university.

I just got my 15 R3 replacement in finally! (upgraded to the 7820 and 120hz screen from the 6700 60hz ips) My question is will all bios work? I have 1.0.2 currently but dells sight only has 1.0.12 as an option? I have the 1.0.8 I downloaded when I had the other system! Is it safe to use?

Weird, I remember others mentioning this but mine happened about 2-3 months later for me. My idle temps are about 10C higher than normal, which also increases load temps. Nothing changed. I have to check on my conductonaut anyway but maybe i'll just remove it for Kryonaught since its just as good apparently
