I haven't read through the whole thread, but I've seen posts that the i5 7300HQ has lower temperatures than the i7. Can anyone elaborate on that? And what about the PCH temeratures with that CPU? I plan to get the i5 and 1060, will that be a bottleneck to any games? I assume it shouldn't but for some FPS drops in RTS games like Total War, but nothing significant.

Please refer above link for the heatsink (20x20x3.5mm) I use for SSD, I use the same heatsink +Kryonaut for PCH but reduce heatsink profile (height) to 2.5mm.

The pad I use with 12w/mk thermal conductivity is from Taiwan local vendor, it's characteristics is similar with Fujipoly 11w/mk.

In case fail link, following 3 photos show the SSD heatsinking mod I done to my 15R3.

Is there anyone in the in the Cincinnati area that has done a repaste on an r3? I have the 7820hk and 1070 and temps are way too high. 96 gaming on the CPU and 75 gaming on the 1070. This is without overclock and using throttlestop. -100. I would be willing to give someone a fifty dollar gift card to help as I am nervous to mess things up.

Second question. My alienware has the 120hz screen and there is some backlight bleed at the bottom. Not horrible, but it is definitely there. It also has 2 stuck pixels in the second quadrant of the screen. How many of us with 120hz screens have this same problem?

Hi all, this might be a silly one but what are you guys using to proper up the back of your laptop for cooling?

I did have a laptop cooler but its too small for this version for the Alienware 15 as it covers the fans. It really doesn't help me when cooling.

    Thanks all

I am using the Cooler Master NotePal U3 but sticking the fans out the back since they are adjustable. I get 4-5 degrees lower temps.

hey guys, new to the forum. I had a quick question. I bought the Alienware 15 r3, i5 6300q, 8gb of ram, and the 1060 6gb. i've seen a few videos of people with the same rig getting a steady 60 fps on ultra in games like gtav and bf 1. i've been struggling get 60 on ultra in any game. the division i have to set it to medium and tweak a few things to get smooth gameplay, same as gtav and bf1. was wondering if there is something wrong with this laptop and if there is something i can do about it. thanks guys!

A big variable is the screen resolution, some may have 1080 screens where yours might be 4k. That is the obvious thing that comes to mind for me. Also I would check what windows power plan you are running, by default they are usually on balanced or some Dell thing. I always put mine on High Performance, this keeps the CPU as fast as needed when it is in use instead of trying to throttle of power savings.

I used Conductonaut and K5 thermal pad paste on the CPU chokes that used to have thermal pads too thicks (I preordrered my alienware it's a serie 1 heatsink). I have a -150mV undervolt.

This is after Battlefield 1, PUBG and Witcher 3, I don't know which game maxed the CPU temps, but I played PUBG for 3 straight hours (with friends in coop it's awesome I really recommend it) and Witcher 3 1 hour (yeah I finished all my studies that day I just wanted to play and shut my brain for one day).
Man,... I used to hit a delta of 12°C and top 95°C day one.... I'd like to thank every contributor here that offered help and advices ! It is now an awesome beast :) :

With conductonaut compared to Kryonaut i have an overall -6°C in load and up to -12°C in idle : awesome, a little hard to apply correctly, you have to insulate everything around the CPU/GPU of course.

I see your temps are impressive but the clocks and multipliers are low.
One more thing is your CPU supports C10 whereas majority of i7 6700hq has only c6 sleep state. @unclewebb This one is of high quality. Enable Speedshift for improved cpu performance.

I think @wickette was using the "on demand" performance governor. FID should have reached its boost speed, but TS only shows max reached temps, not the max reached FID.
And this screenshot was taken after playing, while idling.

    @leeloyd Exactly.

@Vasudev I used the default parameters for turbo/multipliers/clock, what you are seeing are the multipliers/clock in IDLE mode, if you look at the current CPU temp it's 46°C ;).

It's not the MAX but the CURRENT multipliers/clock displayed.

With throttleStop I only applied an undervolt on the CPU, Skylake uses an too much voltage compared to what it needs, I have yet to find a unit that did not work with a 75-100mV undervolt.

    Hello everyone!

I literally just got my new laptop. I was hoping to learn how to OC properly and do mods. There was this thread that I was hoping for to be some sort of newbie all-in-one guide for everyone. As noted before, I've only done some repasting and the usual dusting with my old M18x unit. I used to have HWiNFO installed in my old laptop, but I remember having some trouble with some of its settings before. I don't know if they still exist for the AW15 R3.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, what are the programs I need to have to do the perfect OC as well as monitors (I've installed CPU-Z and GPU-Z before) to maintain it? For the physical mods, I would prefer that some people could help answer the OP's questions in the link I've shared here.

Also, do we have a guide to the removal of any bloatwares that have installed on newly shipped units? I just really want to take good care of this laptop.

    Hey :)

i have a couple of questions ref O/C after repasting and undervolting.

At stock in unigine my score is 2432, with a slight o/c of +150 core and +250 mem my score is 2445, my temp is 62 deg.

as temps are low im pushing more from both clocks and its stable but my unigine score is much worse, going lower the more i push up but still stable.

why is this and why is my score not improving?

also unigine says my core freq is 2050mhz (this fig does not change) and mem is 4020mhz (again during bench does not change), however in evga ocx it says my max clock is 1610mhz, so what gives here?

i want to run bf1 on my external 27" 1440p 60hz monitor on ultra but at stock it will only play at solid 60fps on high settings.

    any ideas?

    ty in advance :D

Your not going to run bf1 on ultra at 1440p and get that kind of performance.

    Ok, ty for your opinion.

Any comment on the o/c unigine stuff?

Anyone else think ultra on an ext 1440 monitor not possible?

im thinking custom setting, terrain qual and a few others on ultra rest high?

i think this gpu could do it!

So, I'm doing some preliminary temp. checks. Here are the results: https://imgur.com/a/P34b7

I ran AIDA64 for less than 3 minutes, and the results look bad. I haven't done any mods, repasting, or BIOS updates (the only software I've updated is for the GPU and Killer 1435 network card).

Any tips on what to do next?

OT: I can't figure out how to post the picture itself. Does it not work for imgur albums? Just link individually?

i cannot see the pics :(

i can tell you what i did after research, there are two things you can do right away which is:

firstly undervolt the cpu, they get too much power anyway you can reduce the power and reduce heat. some ppl are getting huge temp drops!

secondly, raise your unit off the desk! i use 4 small boxes (like 1 inch square) that hold paper clips, one on each corner, careful not to cover any vents or restrict airflow. or buy a laptop stand/ cooler although after research it seems not many are that in-effective. that extra airflow room makes a HUGE difference.

run occt before and after each step (for about ten minutes), just to check the difference.

if that wirks you may not need a gou/cou/pch repaste.

i did not want to risk ****ing up my unit so i bought some liquid metal and had it professionally repasted. where you see iunlock using tape, the shop who did mine used a kinda orange translucent stickers thats he used heat to seal them around the die, very pro job.

its up to you though, but be careful!

personally, i would rather get a pro to repaste using liquid metal, why?

if theu fu@k it up, they have to buy you a new laptop.

if you do it, you will be buying a new laptop!

good luck, and post your results :)

Thanks, @paulrs1975. I'm not sure why you can't see it. I checked, and they're set to public. How about checking my imgur profile here: http://ghostredux.imgur.com

If anything, the pictures show temperatures at:

    CPU: (After < 3minutes)
    Current: 93°C
    Minimum: 51°C
    Maximum: 100°C
    Average: 73°C

    GPU: (After < 3minutes)
    Current: 77°C
    Minimum: 49°C
    Maximum: 77°C
    Average: 58°C
This is all stock settings. BIOS version is 1.1.8.

I'll look into undervolting tonight. As for repasting, I'll most likely do it as it doesn't void the warranty anyway. I'm looking into trying liquid metal this time. I don't know if there are any good people that can help me do it here in Toronto.

OT: Anyone got a good layout setting for HWiNFO64? Someone posted @Papusan's before, but it was a dead MediaFire link.

even 93 is too hot for a laptop i think, im not expert thougho.

u/v will defo help (and takes only 30 mins most of which is benching, the actual U/V takes 5 seconds to do) as will lifting unit up to increase airflow.

there must be somewhere that does LM in Toronto, I live in Poland in the country and I found a guy here 5 mins away!

    good luck mate :)

BTW i lived in Canada for a year, 6 months in Medicine hat and 6 in Wainwright, loved it, esp all the strip bars :D

    West edmonton mall was EPIC!

But thing I loved most was driving up through the Rockies in a grand am :)

Lake louise is simply stunning! I promised wife & kids I would take them one day.

And everyone (mostly) are polite and friendly :)

But DAYUM! The police don't f**k about, I remember them waiting outside bars we were in with one hand one their pistols and the other on their night-stick! Mind you I would probably do the same if I had a bar full of drunk brit soldiers haha xD

I'm experiencing a weird fps issue when launching games. A good example is League of Legends - when I start a game the game stutters and the fps is very low. I press alt-tab and then go back to the game - this is when the stuttering stops. Does anyone else have this issue? I've updated all the drivers. This is the 15 r3 with 7700hq and 1060 gtx.

Yep, I'm definitely not happy with those temperatures. I've done some lifting on my old M18x before, but sometimes you just can't have a good setup especially when you move places. I'm glad you've enjoyed your stay in Canada. You should visit again.

Thank you, I've sent some replies as well.

    Hi guys !
I just have received my AW 15 R3 (i7 7700HQ, GTX 1070 and 120hz Gsync screen), and I'm a bit scarred for the temp of the CPU in game.
Without gaming, my CPU stand to 50-55°C, but when I go for intensive gaming, the CPU can reach 99°C (If I not cap the FPS in Rainbow Six my cpu can reach 100°C !).
I have tried -0,120mV but nothing change..
The strange thing is that the CPU reach 90+°C in certain game like Rainbow Six or The Division, but in other games, my CPU stand to 70-80°C
I have checked and there is just 5°C max difference between core 0, 1, 2 and 3.

And I have stress-tested it with many soft and the temp does not exceed 75°C

    Is that normal ?
btw I don't want to repaste it for now, I do not feel ready for this.

    Thanks in advance !

You said you stress tested... Stress tested most part only Cpu? Fully load on both Cpu and Gpu will push heatsink harder due the unified HS design (shared hs/pipes). Some games will demand more from the processor.

For a stock paste/no OC, what would be the normal/acceptable temperatures while idle and under load.

I currently hover around 49~52°C (GPU) and 51~62°C (CPU) while browsing the forums (with very little programs running in the background).

Under load, I tried some light gaming with Dota 2 (max settings), and the temps were around 73~79°C (GPU) and 94~97°C (CPU).

Looking forward to repasting and changing my network card to Intel 8265.

EDIT: Temp. readings were about 20+ minutes into gaming.

For stock paste at idle <50C and max <90C. I did come across my cousin's HP Omen 15 w/ 7700HQ w/ 1050, before the temps were touching 95C on stock paste, undervolted to -120mV on battery and did some cTDP tweaks in Power options for max performance on AC and max battery life while on battery mode.
GTA V maxes the CPU and GPU at 65c. Undervolt decreased temps by 15-30C at full load and at idle. Repasting it will bring that down by 10C and would hover below 55-60C on CPu and GPU.

Ah. So I'm well within the "normal" range of stock temperatures. I really need to get a hold of new thermal paste or LM. Also, I need to learn how to OC. Gotta read, read, read~

I'm looking to buy 1050ti/1060, 99whr, 60/120 hz variant, but I really need longer battery life, can I disable (manually in BIOS, REG or where ever else) dGPU (make It idle or as secondary)? What about optimus? Can I enable it on 60hz or 120 hz (with out gsync)? What about display? sRGB 90-95% it is great but contrast...(on 1 source its 500:1 on other its 960:1). Deciding between Dell xps 15 and this one + Gigabyte Aero 15 in between (9 cell vs 6 on r3 and xps 15, but slower response time then r3 and faster then xps). Dell has slow response time (ghosting) that's the only thing that keeps my away. But I also need battery similar as xps 15. Any other things that I should know?

At risk of being off-topic, I've already asked this in the TS Guide thread, but I'll post it here as well anyway.
EDIT: Core and Cache have the same values. Intel GPU is at 50.8 mV.

EDIT 2: Do I have to adjust anything with the TPL settings? I readjusted the Core/Cache/Intel GPU again. Here is the album of my tests which is the same as the one in the quote above.

    Hi guys,
I'm in search of a backpack for my AW 15 r3, and I can't find any one that can fit the extra vents.
I don't want the Vindicator because it's too expensive in my country (France) and I want a simple backpack, not a "gaming" backpack with red and big Alienware logo..
    Thanks in advance!

Check this thread. We’ve made some suggestions there.

Anyone in here own a alienware 15 r3 with the gtx 1080 max q?? I'm trying to find some data on how well it overclocks and how it compares to the 1070 in the alienware 15 r3. I know the 1070 come overclocked now but from what I've seen on gaming reviews the 1080 max q gets higher fps than the 1070. Plus this was with the zephyrus which has a lower watt gpu than alienware and has the locked 7700 hq of which the alienware comes with a unlocked hk. Plus the 1080's cuda cores and shaders I think the 1080 max q in the alienware could actually be a beast in that 15 inch alienware. I just see very little people post about them. But I know people own them. And the fact that they aren't on here complaining about them tends to lead me to believe that they run great. I had 1 guy on the alienware subreddit had one and said it crushed pretty much any game he threw at it on max settings.

I have the USB selective suspend setting disable under Alien Fusion, but my external hard drive can't be read (?) sometimes. It shows up in the Device Manager, but it has an orange triangle notification on it. When it's not read, it doesn't show up in the Disk Management.

To add to this, sometimes the HDD isn't showing up on boot. I suspect a loose cable, but what if it's not?

Currently, after a restart, both external hard drive and the HDD that came with the unit can be seen without errors under the Device Manager and Disk Management.

EDIT & OT: Why is the unit using RAID under its BIOS settings? I tried to switch it to AHCI, but it didn't boot properly, so I had to put it back to RAID.

Sometimes RAID causes some issues. Before that, try running chkdsk /f /x on your external HDD and see if it fixes the issue. Don't forget to check SMART values of ext. HDD using crystal disk info.
If all else fails, try this method https://triplescomputers.com/blog/u...ch-windows-10-from-raidide-to-ahci-operation/
