Ran a quick Firestrike run after a touch of OC, pretty impressed with this 17r3 with the graphics amp.Works very well IMO.

Wow - I didn't realize the gains were that profound with the GA. I suppose it helps to use the 980ti! -
Dont suppose you could let us know what your overclock settings are - im getting this http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/9076155 with CPU bios OC LVL2 ( 4.0ghz ) and nothing on the Titan X in the graphics amplifier.
-
Wow your graphics score is really low for that gpu, somthing in your configuration of the gpu's must be wonky. Make sure you are in fact running on the Titan first.
-
Are you running test on external monitor and only that monitor?
-
No - just the laptop display - will try with an external .
-
Thats better http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/9088567 - still not matching you though !

Hello
I have AW 17 r2 4980hq 16gb stock ram 980m 512ssd +1 tb hdd
I order 240w psu and i wont overclock my cpu just need i know whitch XTU setting the best.
Can anyone help me? -
Managed to get some good results with my AW 17 R3
-
Alright. After wrestling with this throttling issue since I got the system, Dell replaced my Mobo, CPU, and GPU. I noted that this board came with a slighter faster CPU, 4720 over the original 4710 that was in my unit originally. Let's see if that finally gets the thing running properly. Will keep everybody posted.
-
i just got a 17r3 with an 870m. I dont want to shell out the 20 bucks for 3d mark right now so im wondering what tweeks should i know about? What should i do to make sure i get max perf out of the video card? Is there a free benchmark i can use to make sure everything is operating well?
-
You can use the free Basic Edition http://www.futuremark.com/support/downloads

3Dmark11 is a better test if you want to push your hardware. -
Can someone post the screenshot of their crystal disk mark results for the 256GB PM951 SSD of Alienware 17 R3(one that came along with laptop)?

Guys, I have a brand new Alienware 17R3 (i6700HQ, GTX980M, UHD Screen, 16GB RAM) and I get 7983 on Firestrike 1.1 (Graphics 9121, Physics 9701, Combined 3628), which I think is very low. I am running Prema Bios and have the 240W PSU. Any ideas? I might as well return this and get an ASUS G752...
-
I have Alienware 17 R2 (i4980HQ, GTX980M, 16GB RAM, 240w PSU) and I get 3046 on Firestrike 1.1 (Graphics 3357, Physics 9112, Combined 1132), which I think is very low. Power plan high perfomance. Any ideas?
-
-
I think that's about right. I have the same specs except I have the i7-6820HK and 980m 8GB and I get 8314 (stock). Looking at other scores, to get in the 8500+ range you need to start overclocking the GPU and/or CPU.
-
Here is my stock --- 8332 ---- which is acceptable -- http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7111446
Here is my very quick very very mild overclock --- 8660 -----http:// www.3dmark.com/fs/7111707 (Used afterburner software to OC the gpu)webjeff likes this. -

Couldn't go much higher on stock vBios. Noob question - in the MSI afterburner setting, does the memory clock setting halves? I.e. to get 200mhz oc, you +400?
EDIT: With PremaMod +135/300

Yep, some overclocking programs are like that, for instance NVidia Inspector is the same. The true frequency of the VRAM is what is shown in GPUz on the Sensor Tab, but because GDDR5 is quad-pumped (don't ask me what that really means!) it means that the 'effective' (relative performance) frequency is quadruple what the actual frequency is. A lot of overclocking software seems to determine VRAM overclocks on double-pumped (not sure if correct terminology) from the previous generation GDDR3 which is double what the actual frequency is, therefore that's why you're saying you have to set +400 to get +200 actual increase in frequency. I see the same when overclocking my GPU. -
Just received the new 17 r3 with the i7-6820 and also bought an amp with 980ti. Never over clocked before or ran vBios. What is the first thing I should do to get the most out of the new system and any guides would be awesome
-
Nice got an amp with a 980TI too what did you do to get that. Never over'clocked anything btw
-
I have the same specks you have but im only 7504 (stock) PLEASE HELP
-
Guys with the Graphic Amplifiers, can you post some feedback. Do you get the same result with the 980ti as if it was mounted in a desktop PC? With the GA on, does this mean the cooler on the laptop GPU is off and so you get a more quiet and less heat on laptop?
-
There's a little bit of power loss. If connected with an external monitor you lose up to 5% or so, if running it direct to laptop display you lose up to 7-9%? Something like that.
Also think I read windows only sees the external video card if plugged in, so I imagine internal one is disabled. -
IF you get an amp I would highly suggest plugging it straight to an external monitor. I am using my Samsung 55inch UHD tv. For base fire strike on Laptop UHD i get close to 10900 with amp. Plugged into to my TV, I get between 13500 -14000. based on settings. OC I get around 15200 with amp.
I do not know if that is comparable or not to the card in a desktop, but the loss is much less when in an external monitor for sure. -
So I bought my 17 r3 during the Black Friday sale last year, I'm a little upset as right now I'm not getting the benchmarks others are. Alienware posted on YouTube running the witcher 3 at 40-45 FPS on ultra in 4K, I'm on 1080 at the same frame-rates. I feel that my rig is slacking compared to others. I have the 980m, with 8 gigs of ram, as well at the i7-6820HK. All drivers are updated, was messing around with OC last night but haven't got to far as the device keeps freezing up on me. Maybe you guys could give me some better insight on how to squeeze out more frame rates from this thing?
-
Please provide a link to video. Because a 980 Ti can't even do Witcher 3 at Ultra at that FPS. Follow the link to Witcher 3 graphics performance at Notebook Check. You can see that a 980M at 1080P Ultra gets a min of 43 FPS. Sounds like your system is running right.

Hello,
I just received my Alienware 17 R3 from outlet today.
I've run the SupportAssist and ePSA to quickly test the laptop.
There has been no issue so far (other than the fact that Windows is installed on 1TB spinner instead of ssd
)
I also installed and ran 3DMark and got 8301 (everything stock including the drivers.)
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/10492030
Does it seem ok? and is there anything else I should check? -
Better stock score than I got. Mine was awful still don't know why
-
well i bought me a alienware 17 r3 4k model from best buy 3 weeks ago and so far its been ok, but its been getting really hot. So tonight i took it apart and did a repaste. The cooler had some grey cement looking stuff that was hard as rock. before i did all this my temps was in the 80s just browsing and watching videos, and the fans would be screaming. now as i write this, the cpu is 49c and gpu is 54c and the fans are barely noticeable. they have even shut off for a few seconds.

Wow, really sounds like you had a bad paste job. I'm using Chrome to stream the debate, and a Star Trek Voyager episode, while chatting on Skype and browsing this site + a couple of others. CPUID HWMonitor shows my CPU max is 52*, and min of 43*. My 980M's max is 46*.
-
i totally forgot about cpuid hwmonitor. its showing my cpu min of 39 and max 66, and my 970 at 43. guess its going to be ok now
-
Here is my Firestrike bench for my Alienware 17R2 (i7-4720HQ / GTX980m / 16GB RAM / 1080 display / Win 7 Pro): NOTE: Running Prema Vbios + overclocked 980m to +150clock / +300mem

Cinebench R15 runs...
CPU: 892cb
OpenGL: 146.16fps
Just crazy....
Odd that it shows the stock 2.72GHz....anyhow...
Test done @ 4.1GHz...
Let me double check these LOL.....nonetheless....it's steady...

For the extra 1-2k it costs, it should perform better.

. About the same price for ↑↑↑ Sky X9 as a AW17R3 here at home

@Papusan, That Sky X9 is $4,300US with a 6700K, therefore, I wouldn't expect anything less from it, although for the money it's not that impressive. I do see what you've said about the cost of both laptops though from where you're at...wow...expensive eh?
Nonetheless, the gap is closing real fast between laptops and desktops....it's already at a point where for most games, a laptop is more than enough to bring games playable at max settings with more than adequate frame rates.
I must say that I'm pretty impressed with the power of these gaming laptops. To hang up there with the 6700K's....not complaining
With Pascal...that gap is sure to be even more slim. Can't wait....Last edited: Feb 4, 2016jackie89 likes this. -
Sky X9 aka Clevo P870 is priced here at home to 26.500 Nok - $ 3,100. Not bad... With i7-6700K, Nvidia 200w desktop card, 32Gb ram, 512GB Samsung Oem NVMe M.2 SSD + 1000GB Hdd and+++. Need not cost $ 4,300
Try +4.7Ghz on an Bga model. Bigger step between socket vs BGA processor if you want OC
And the nice single desktop card is a nice Overclocker also. Not a need for higher priced 980m Sli.
Edit: 16GB ram and not 32
But you can put in 64GB. Can this be done in your Aw?
Last edited: Feb 4, 2016 -
My AW is more than adequate to run the games that I want along with handling any of my resource intensive tasks, for half the price. It's obvious that you're in the extreme with your opinion on bga's, but this is a benchmark thread for Alienware 17R2/R3, not a, "lets bash on bga," thread.
Plus, I want a laptop that looks good. Not a piece of rectangle that houses desktop components. Anyone can make that. If I want more power I'll buy the Amplifier + Pascal. There's more to bga's when you have options. You seem to be forgetting that according to your sig.
What's your XTU score? I see that you're running at 4.3GHz....it should be pretty high. -
Xtu bench is fond of newer and faster memory. A pretty useless bench test for processors. Even an throttled i7-4880Bga can have ok Xtu score. But physics in 3dmark11 is just below 11,000 and just about 12,500 in Fire Strike. Cinebench 11.5 is 9.42 / R15 858cb. Wprime 32 / 1024M 5.39 / 167 sec. Not bad to be a 3 year old 4.th gen EOL processor. More to give if this is needed. But the main goal for me now is to put in place a Sky X9 fastest as possible
Of course with Prema's bios/vbios for serious OC'ing.
-
So what's your XTU score if it's useless? LOL... Something that is globally ranked with a wide range of CPU's (including 4th gens) written off as useless?
I run 4790K's in my desktops so I know what they can do...the point here is that you didn't answer my question. -
If you look at Hwboot or search for i7-4930mx you will find it
.
If you run stable 4.3 why is the Cinebench R15 score so damn low? Skylake should have a 10% gain over Hotwell. You should have more like 940 cb and not 892 cb with 4.3Ghz. All processor benchmarks should have the same 10% gain in performance over Hotwell at same clock speed. 4.3Ghz on Skylake is more like +4.7Ghz on Hotwell. -
I'm not running at 4.3 constantly and that bench wasn't tested at 4.3. Why are you assuming? Yes, Skylake's tend to have ~10% gain over Haswell.
Did you forget your xtu score? What is your Cinebench R15? This is a benchmark thread after all. Or did you forget that too? -
Did you read my ^^^previous post? Cinebench 11.5 and R15 score is posted there. Will be happy to see your new and much better Cinbench scores with your stable 4.3Ghz
As you said this is a benchmark thread.
-
Let's see some screen shots. After all this is a benchmark thread isn't it?
I'll run some more benches tomorrow at 4.3 and post them. Meaning, screen shots.
You have yet to post any screenshots of your xtu or any of your claimed numbers.
Just saying...

I'm debating if I want to use Cool Labs Liquid Ultra or GeLid....hmm...

I don't remember but maybe 10-12 degrees lower than former Gelid Extreme. Hotwell is a lot warmer processor than Skylake. You can't have a decent overclock on Hotwell without Clu. I have run stress test with +114w on my processor without overheating. This is impossible with ICD/GC Extreme. If you don't want Clu then use ICD or Thermal Grizzly. I wouldn't use GC Extreme on any processors. Only on graphics cards.
