Dell
Dell can't make a good fan profile.
-
-
I only heard this once when I started the laptop. Never any other time. That's sort of strange then.
-
i can hear that noise every time fan starts, I don't know if it's the cpu or the gpu fan...but in fact it means that fan in idle is off?! --> cpu temps in idle are quite high (50-60 celsius degrees)
-
I can hear this sound like once every 10 minutes or even more time, for me it's only for the left CPU fan.
-
Me too..every time CPU fan starts to rotate...that is Never while gaming, but only first time when temperatures grow up
-
Ok weird issue.. hopefully there is a fix. I notice when I go to my desktop the screen dims a bit.. switching back and forth from desktop to a webpage and the screen gets darker or brighter. It's very annoying as I have it set to high performance and brightness maxed. There must be a setting or two causing this.
-
Yes it is....awful noise...hate it
Exactly...it's not only once when the notebook starts...always when the cpu gets hotter (like 80 C) the fans are going to start and you can hear that noise...like in the youtube video -
So we can consider it as "normal"?
-
guys i need help.
got the 17 today win win8 but when i started it up for the first time it asked me to choose a colour, so i just picked one cos i wanted to get on.
but now when i restart its &^%^&* annoying me.....
so does anyone know how to change the colour that you see when restarting all the time ?
thanks -
Don't know how to help you with this colour thing, btw I experienced 2 BSOD while at Windows Update section, maybe is for the Killer Network Manager? Going to disable it and retry, they should update this unstable tool.
-
That must be the autobrightness thing. It sucks I loathe it.
-
You can disable the adaptive brightness feature. It's located at the bottom of the advance settings in your current power profile.
-
Ran the test and the audio is fine there. Still sounds muffled and mostly on the left side in windows. Tried driver uninstalls and reinstalls as well as updates. No joy. I'm guessing it's just lower quality speakers at this point.
-
If the audio is muffled and comes from under your laptop I'm sorry but you have my same assembly issues, your frontal speakers are not connected. Replacement or technical intervention.
If someone lucky has frontal speakers working can you please post a video on YouTube?
Seems that we have a quite common assembly issue here. -
Mine worked fine. But I sent the laptop back so I can't record anything, sorry!
-
So actually we have no video proof about an Alienware 17 with working frontal speakers
Luckily there is a photo that shows the existence of these speakers on the Service Manual at page 71: precisely two frontal speakers 2W and one subwoofer 2,5W and two stereo microphones obviously to complete the audio sector.
Like @Ramzay said we must escalate this issue to Alienware and reviewers should definitely stop to write bad things about muffling audio because it means that they are reviewing defective samples. -
so not only do i have issues with the win8 colour on boot but the laptop aint as loud or as clear and the previous one i had (m17x)
i have played with the sound blaster but it just hits destortion, i would give my left nut to change for a better quality
sound like the poor old m17x has. -
Seems mine was already off... hmmm I have to see if it keeps doing it..
-
Hi guys, I'm new here.
Just ordered my Alienware 17 R2, very excited to get it, it's the 970m model (student budget and all.) after I was refunded for my faulty MSI GS60 Ghost Pro (860m model) that I ordered in October of last year.
I'm currently like a child at Christmas waiting for their new toy. Hope I get it soon
EDIT: Order confirmation email came through, my excitement is now in overdrive. This is my first Alienware and it's definitely a brand I've wanted to buy for a very very long time.

If you compare the fan noise with other notebooks like the Asus ROG G751 then the answer is no. I've returned my AW17 R2 and will probably not buy a AW17R2 again until this problem is solved...Does anybody know if there is a official statement for this issue?Last edited: Mar 9, 2015

Hey guys! Last night I was playing with XTU and SiSoft Sandra. Guess what have happened. When the machine is with the default settings, it completes all the tests without reaching 47W, but when I increase the limits of the Turbo Boost duration and limits, it shuts down. Even XTU is helpless. I used 240W PSU, It had no effect. Cpu performed better but the wattage, nothing higher than 42W. I think its the bios all alone.
-
Maybe because the max TDP of 47W is only reached when the CPU and the integrated GPU are running full load at the same time.
-
My speakers work fine on the diagnostic test, as I stated. They sound muffled while in window (gaming or music).
-
I have a 512GB M.2 Sata so the answer is No, the max is not 256GB. You will be able to O.C. the GPU once the New Driver is released.

I figure if I'm going to look at the thing every day it better be something that I like looking at
-
Have you solved this? Are you trying to play Day Z with the Laptop Plugged in? If you are trying to play on Battery Power, you need to go into your power settings and change it to "High Performance".

Oh my...
so I just made my purchase. Not yet an official owner but it's on it's way!
AW17R2 - the base i7, 970m, 8gb, 1tb model.
I made my purchase not through Dell, but through Tigerdirect.
I did so for the 10% Tiger Direct discount that my CC offers, in-stock availability, no sales tax (dell would charge me 8% tax. Grrrr
) and free 2day shipping.
So technically, it's like 18% off dell's site with - hopefully - rush shipping? I'll be sad if it turns out that they also get it from Dell along with the added wait time.
Hopefully, it will arrive this week so I can run it through some benchmarks and tests. Work is on an odd lull... and I just jinxed myself... so I should have time to really examine it thoroughly.
This will be my first foray into a "gaming laptop" and alienware.
My last laptop for ~5 years was a Lenovo Z560 which could handle Adobe illustrator and photoshop, dual box FFXI, or BFBC2, but has recently started to sputter on BFBC2 which made me super sad.
15.6" 1366x768 glossy display was good back then! really it was! maybe...
Fingers crossed that it clears the benchmarks and tests. I really want to have a laptop again.
I'm planning to add on a squaretrade 3yr warranty, 2x 256gb or 1x 512GB m.2 SSD, and 1x 2TB HDD.
Ahaha, I'm excited.
On a plus note, my next month's living costs are gratis as per my new assignment. Yay!
Cost-wise, its like I'm getting this laptop and all the extras for free.
-
congrats, I hope you enjoy it just let us know if you have any trouble
-
This is very strange, my speakers are dead on every test enviroment, only subwoofer is working.
I'll have technical intervention from Dell between tomorrow and friday, once seen the alien autopsy I'm going to finally post the truth about this issue. -
I have not, I posted my results in the benchmark thread. It is running plugged in on the 240w PS. I'm running on high performance as well and I know the NVidia GPU is working because I have the icon enabled to show what programs are being utilized by the GPU. One interesting thing, I installed ArmaIII and that runs fantastic at 1920x1080 and pretty much ultra settings. 40-50FPS in every scenario, it's pretty much the same engine as DayZ but I get 15-25 FPS in that game even on medium/low settings @1920x1080. :/
-
Anyone see the geforce announcement about the Witcher 3 bundle offer? Guessing we can't find a way to snag that title / offer after a month of owning the 980m / 970m...

HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
does that offer even apply to the mobile cards? -

I must have been lucky with all of the "7" Gaming Laptops I have owned. I have NEVER had an issue with ANY Laptop I have owned

Hey guys
Noticed some marks on my laptop just from normal oil from clean hands after about a week usage.. This pissed me off.. The nice material on the laptop shows a lot of dirty and oil etc...
I managed to clean most of it off using an alchohlic wipe then cleaning that with lint free LCD Cleaner but you can still see it a little
Can people share tips or products they use to keep their gaming beasts clean?
Please share anything as for keeping the LCD clean or keep dust out etc
I have googled some ideas:
Bench Mark every so often and check temps, if temps increase clean dust
A LCD sleeve ? You put it on the LCD and dont close the lid. Keeps screen free of dust and doesnt touch your keyboard ( but i couldnt find any on ebay)
How would you keep finger prints off and marks from hands as I mentioned above?
Also post any other things or ideas !
This is a photo of the hand marks just from a week usage. And I been washing my hands before use to
Also what kind of material/plastic is the laptop? I might be able to look up the best way or product to use to clean that type of material

guys is there anyone online who have the ALIENWARE 17 with win7 ?????
-
I'm also interested on this because the configuration page says that my i7 4980HQ is not compatible with Windows 7 and honestly I don't believe that.
-
For the others that are also having speaker issues.
Contact Technical Support. They will initially insist on having you mail your laptop into their service centers, refuse and insist on having a technician being sent to you (as long as your warranty covers it). My basis of refusal was more or less it was my right to have a technician sent to me (warranty covers it) and bypassing the turnaround and the fear of having the A02 BIOS installed on my system. They are sending my technician new speakers and subwoofer, as well as a 240W PSU to come and replace my speakers and hopefully (but will probably just swap out the 180W) leave the 240W PSU. This is honestly the only reason I have stayed with Dell for 10 years now, over that time through a Latitude D830 and XPS L501X I have had two motherboards, a screen, a touchpad, and a keyboard replaced in the comfort of my own home. -
Why the fear of having the a02 BIOS installed?
-
IIRC: It has bricked some systems already, so I would not like to have a replacement system (which could at that point be a refurbished A17 R2 that they have fixed at this point, pure speculation though). Also, the only real confirmation from her that I was going to be granted a 240W PSU was when I saw the order replacement list shipped out. So I didn't want to be running the hybrid-power BIOS on the 180W PSU. Once I receive the 240W PSU, I probably won't change BIOS until I'm sure the newest issued one has no issues. Seeing as besides for the speaker issue, I am fairly satisfied with my system.
-
It's actually the other way around haha.
If you ask a technician to come out, they'll most likely replace the defective part with a refurbished one. However if your laptop is new (within the 30 day limit) and you ask for a replacement system, they will send you a new one. They might tell you that you should get the part replaced instead but if you stick with it they'll put in a new order for you.
And you'll know if it's new. By law Dell cannot send you a refurbished product without it being clearly marked as refurbished (they'll be big stickers all over the box and packaging that say refurbished).
The reason I know this is a couple of years ago I bought an XPS 17 which came with defective speakers (there was a buzzing sound from the left one) so I called Dell and they said they'll send out a tech. The tech came out the next day and openly told me that since my laptop is new I should ask for a replacement system otherwise I'll be getting refurbished parts.
Granted there's really nothing wrong with refurbished parts but since I paid for a new laptop, I want a new laptop and so I did what the tech said and voila they sent me a new XPS 17.bnosam likes this. -
Yup still waiting on my replacement system. I ordered on the 5th.
-
Got my new system a couple days ago, replaces my old M17X from.... I guess 2011. I was torn on buying on this. Soldered system so no upgrades, still just 2 memory slots. All things I considered before I decided to buy it. I like the look of Alienware's. The Build quality has always been solid to me and this one is no different. I know I didn't get the absolute best system, but I am really happy with what I got.
Good to be here.bnosam likes this. -
The only major issue I had was the hot keyboard under load. Barring that I would've kept it. All the issues mentioned about this laptop didn't affect me.fahaed120 likes this.

I'm thinking on getting one, only one doubt is left, is the keyboard confortable? It's note centered with the screen and it's moved to the left due to the num keypad.
Anyone complainig about that? I can't decide between 15 and 17 because of that.
