    Dan,
If you're planning on using HDMI to connect to your display, then you need to be aware of the following limitations: HDMI 1.3 is capable of 60Hz @ 1080p and 120Hz @ 720p. HDMI 1.4 has the bandwidth to handle 120Hz @ 1080p. Anything higher than those specs and you'll have to use the Mini Display Port connection (included on your AW 17 R3). Just make sure the display comes with a Display Port connector and you're good to go! Have fun with your new rig - I just got my AW17R2 (probably one of the last to be built) 2 weeks ago and I f***ing LOVE this beast.

Thanks, it seems the mini display port has been removed from the r3? So maybe the new thunderbolt port can do what I want? As I said, this laptop stuff is new to me so trying to figure it out.

Interesting. (I just looked at your spec sheet and you are correct. It says it has a USB-C Thunderbolt connector, which is strange because from what I read about USB-C is that it doesn't support Thunderbolt devices. Please read what I read here: http://www.macworld.com/article/289...r-new-connection-overlord-get-used-to-it.html ) Anyhow, you should be fine as long as your display can connect to one of the formats that USB-C supports. You can also do 120Hz with HDMI if all else fails...

    ******************************************************************************************************
    *EDIT* - I just found this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8558/displayport-alternate-mode-for-usb-typec-announced

So, looks like you can use the USB-C port for displayport as well. Looks like you have a bit of reading ahead of you to figure out your best option, but I guess the outcome will be positive, as it looks like you'll be able to do what you originally asked (120 - 144Hz display).

Anyone else had their R3 canceled prior to going into production?

The word from Dell is that there is an issue with production and no new orders will be taken at this time. Was told that not possible to place a new replacement order at this time.

Did you order through the website or by talking to someone on the phone? I ordered mine on the phone. When I called to find out why it was cancelled I was told that I had to talk to the phone order dept as the representative could not see the order details and the phone order dept was closed. Sounds weak...

    Hey guys,

I didn't get the SSD from Alienware because I plan to upgrade it myself. Any of you know if it is still going to be m.2 ssd?

    Thanks,

Hey, so going through all this discussions figured out how stupid the mobo on this thing is, do you think a faulty 17 R2 is worth to be bought as scrap for as low as 200 usd if the board is faulty? i got it that the stupid design now is Fully soldered so a faulty part costs an entire mobo.
Do you recommend that i go ahead and try to fix it for myself? (i`m an amateur DIY sort of guy)
Where i can find a kinda cheap mobo for it or one that fits its place identically regardless of the GPU/CPU specs.
Its an intel 4710HQ , 2X8 DDR3, 970M GDDR5 ,256 m2 SSD and another HDD i`m sure the parts in good condition alone are worth much than the 200$ so was thinking of taking your opinion whether or not trying to fix it.
and it states that its (Faulty motherboard, and I/O controller failure)

Also on offering an identical 15 inch laptop with similar defects.

    and 3 older ones : 2x17 inch Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 770M Nvidia 1x14 inch Intel Core i7-4700MQ

    Appreciate any opinions in advance.

Think it will be hard to find/buy used functional motherboards for these Aw laptops right now. Ingeniously with soldered hardware right?

I never knew that previous AW came with upgradable GPU/CPU (i always thought of AW as an inflated overpriced brand lots of with eye candy but with the swappable parts that completely changes it), mainly it meant in case of failed part the loss is minimal, plus you can swap with others or just buy an upgrade through AW/dell whoever thought of the new idea of one board made the AW equal to any 1 PCB laptop which is really horrible... and kills the idea of a "multi years worth kept gaming rig"

    Howdy Taladond,

I ordered mine on the 18th of Sep, and it is still in Pre-Production. It listed 12 - 16 days shipping, but has always shown a delivery date of 13 Oct. I have been hoping it wouldn't take that long, but its not looking good...

It's an industry wide problem - you can order a replacement motherboard from Dell since you didn't get a warranty apparently. With the move to BGA I have said from the start it is imperative to carry a warranty during the period you hold a laptop, up to the five years Dell offers. It sucks, but otherwise you are left in the cold.

    Hey Guys,
Yeah Taladond, I ordered my R3 since the R2 I bought a few weeks previous was broken and had to send back, got a refund and purchased my own replacement. Placed the order on the 24th, It cancelled itself and re-ordered its self on the 29th apparently because I got 2 confirmations on those dates and asked the question. I was also told that everyone who placed and order got this? is that true? did anyone order on or before 24th? or 29th? It's also In per-production still. Little worried this is my first experience with dell and it's not going to great If I am honest.

Dont think they will erase your order history.
They probably ordered it under a new customer number.
Just add all the customer numbers under your online account so you will be able to track all the orders that way.

Ok, good news, my R3 has went into production. This is the furthest the R3 has been for me, and when I ordered my R2 in August I did it on a Wednesday afternoon, it went into production on the Thursday and then it was dispatched on the Friday. SO hopefully this bad boy follows in those footsteps.

So. I ordered an r3 on the 25th of September. Got it on the 5th or 6th.
    Specs were:
    4k display
    980m
    6820HK
1tb hdd (got aa Samsung SSD online)
    8gb ddr4 ram
    1 year accidental warranty.

It comes and is missing the 4k display. Boo.
Benchmarks I did with Fraps before sending the thing back were (max settings, everything highest it can go) Mad Max @ minimum 70. Far cry 4 @30 average (but with aa maxed so that's why) and bf4 @70fps minimum. Again all settings were maxed to the extreme. So maybe taking AA off as you don't need it on a 17 inch Wil help more. Don't know how to overclock either so.

The original deal I got through chat was 20% off. This was due to me applying a 10% coupon and then later chatting with a lady who took off 10% again when I asked about another coupon.
Ended up being 1800 after tax (little more probably ).

    But.

    No 4k!!

Yes I know 980m and 4k means not much 4k. But I'm also a student and love the tiny pixels and crispness of 2k. So ofcourse I'll love 4ks extra crispness. Plus GA and Whatever gpu can do 4k at 60fps will be awesome down the road.

So I call them up about the error. Offer me either 180$ credited (20% of 250 for the 4k) or refund.
So I talk to spare parts. Can't replace the 1080 display so no other options.
    So. Fk it. Refund.

Now my setup is the same. Made sure 4k is there. (I saved the original chat session of the first sale. And it i specified twice and she affirmed that it would be 4k. I even CHECKED the parts and it was there. I guess after it got invoiced something happened and I didn't look at the specs again, presuming they would remain the same.)

The only difference now is I added 12gb of ram and will probably talk to them again to have it lowered back to 8GB and pick up 16 on Newegg as it saves money. But I ended up getting 20 percent off still (I did Id.me troop thing to get a code. But then called a certain department up who added the 200 off after. Which I have to call back after being invoiced to have it applied. Which is good becuase now I can triple check that gd 4k display is on there ) I got the first 10% or so off already from the guy I bought from via chat.

Says I should get by the 23rd. So that's good.

    I ordered a 17 R3 with the 6820, 4K screen, 8gb ram, no SSD.
My order was placed on 8/28. The delivery estimate is 10/20.

Not to mention the fact that the prices have dropped over $100 between when I placed my order and now.

Yeah, I do think people who pre-ordered are getting screwed.

Hey guys I'm seriously considering this laptop because it seems like the 4k screen is the best option on the market in terms of 17 inch screens.

Do you think that the 970M should be able to handle most basic day to day multimedia in 4k? I also plan on doing some gaming in 1080p and watching 1080p movies, will the downscaling suffer to the point where I'd be better off just getting the 1080p screen? On that note, does anyone know which 1080p panel they use?

Has Anyone gave a review yet for the Alienware 17 R3?
I've got $$$ burning a hole in my pocket to buy a new Gaming laptop and I've narrowed it down to the Alienware 17 R3 or a Asus ROG G752.
I just need someone to convince me Alienware will be the better buy...
