I dunno man. To have that kind of paste job where one core is running so hot and throttling sounds more like a problem that needs a replacement. Repasting is not easy on these laptops and if you are still under warranty it may be best to get a replacement. I have zero problems with my 6820hk and haven never throttled. What games are you playing that you get this kind of problem?
-
Well that's subjective, but repasting is not that difficult. There is a great repaste thread, along with my Grizzly Conductonaut thread, both containing enough pictures to walk anyone through a repaste.
For the issue at hand with the core, I've experienced this already so I know for sure that it could very well be a bad paste job.
I agree, if he can get a replacement, do it. If not, simply repaste it.

As I novice, I did a repaste and it wasn't that easy. Depends on how comfortable you are with taking a laptop completely apart. That repaste thread is definitely great, but not for the novice users. I just dont think think a re paste is going to help. 6820hk's dont throttle, especially when not oc'd. And only on one core. That is kinda suspect. I would like to see a screen shot if him running whatever game thats is causing him the throttle
-
My point is that a bad thermal paste job done from the factory can very well cause one core to go wacko. I've already experienced this...trust me I know that it is a possibility. That's my point.
-
I can't make out what you're trying to say. Can you please type more clearly? I can understand if English is not your first language, that's okay, but your sentence structure does not make any sense.
-
im a ling strunk no w but I decnt think A novce should attempt repate; It's not unless you what you're doing
-
my point is that not a lot of people want to repaste. It is 1-2 hour process. And they 're so many t tings to ****up , I am am a electrical engineer and I do find
-
and unless you 980m (* plos 75c you are 0k
-
I had suspected paste from the start actually, had seen your guide quite a while ago, great post btw. I checked and had no voltage irregularities so id be willing to bet when i pull it all apart there be a nice dry crusty spot right on top of core 1. Most important one of course
And to clerify whenever i get my #1 core up to maximum usage (no o'cs) then add the heat of the gpu under heavy load and or get the other cores putting out some good heat it will get hot and throttle. Likes to happen in my heavily modded f04 and when im tabbing out of CPU intensives games like my beloved Mechwarrior Onlineiunlock likes this. -
Yes indeed. Make sure to snap a pic of the lunar surface with dry spots haha....because it'll surely be there.
It's crazy how the smallest bit of skin (the die) with a little less paste on it can have such a dramatic effect on temps on a given core.

Hello everyone, I got my alienware r3 last week. It's coming on this wednesday. Can't wait to see it.
Have a nice day

Hello iunlock, I've bought my dream spec. Gtx980m, 6820HK, 128gb ssd, 16gb ddr4 ram, intel wireless card, windows 10 pro, vindicator laptop case
DarkKnight919 and iunlock like this. -
Excellent. You've got the most important things...980M + 6820HK =P
Everything else can be upgraded at your convenience which is nice.
Keep us posted!

I'd better say something in this thread, now that I'm officially an owner.
i7-6820 HK, 16GB RAM, 980M 8GB, 4K UHD screen, 1TB PM951 SSD + 1TB 7200rpm HDD, Killer Wi-Fi + LAN.
One of the first things I did was to overclock the CPU to 3.8GHz on all 4 votes. I know it can be pushed further, and I might experiment more later. Even if I don't, 3.8 isn't a terrible speed for daily use.
I am definitely impressed with the 980M and the screen. Doom runs at 60+fps on ultra settings at 1080p, and Skyrim is running very nicely on max settings at 4K.
Edit: I'm coming from a M17x R2, 6GB RAM, 2x Radeon 5870M, 2x 512GB HDD RAID-0. The performance increase is incredible.
The only issue I've had so far is with Windows updates. Sometimes I'll get an error while checking, and need to reboot for the updates to work correctly. I've updated to the latest drivers from Killer, but using the suite instead of the bare driver. I'll try using the latest driver only, and if that doesn't work, I'll chalk it up to a flaky factory OS install and start fresh.DarkKnight919 likes this. -
Very nice. I agree the screen and the 980M works very well for more than decent gaming. I too run 3.8 quite often on all four cores...it just does everything I need well and it seems to be that sweet spot. Running at 4.0, 4.2 or even 4.3 makes no difference from what I've seen...just more heat.
How are your speeds on the 1tb PM951? -
Not 950 Pro speeds, but still pretty good.
-
Not bad at all....in real world use most wouldn't even notice the speed difference.

I'm just curious is there actually a larger PSU for the 17R3 other than the supplied 240W? Let's say 330W?
I've been hearing a lot of stories that 240W won't be enough if you push the GPU (GTX980M)
I google for a bit and the AW18 actually uses a 330W adapter. Can I use that for the 17R3? -
-
for the AlienFX themes theres no white light right?
-
Dell use low quality leds. Same as is my AW17!! Nearest is pink.

Yeah it's backwards, LOL Newest tech isn't always better

is it that its white is not an option in alien fx or that the white doesn't appear white?
if it's just that it's not an option I can put together a guide on using custom colours for alien fx, if people are interested as I have mine set to non-selectable shades -
I read somewhere that you can modify the hex value in some settings file of AlienFX to get white colour
-
You can modify for white color. But the results will be light pink.
-
FYI - you can get the amp through Dell epp for $136.79. Free 2 day shipping and 15% Dell rewards if you use your Dell preferred account as well - this will bring it down to $106ish. Use code code EXTRA10

please post it! -
Hi guys, I have a 17 R2, could you help me?
My AC adapter is gone, so I need to buy a new one. However, I live in Brazil and there is no 240w AC adapter over here just 180w. I read some about it, and some people said there is no problem using a 180w because there is a limit around 160~177w that the laptop doesnt pass. Is it true? Can I use a 180w AC adapter with no problem?
Sorry for my bad english guys and thank you very much for helping! -
Dell Brazil does offer the 240 W adapter :
http://accessories.la.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=br&l=pt&s=dhs&sku=331-9052
It's not cheap and shipping takes at least 3 weeks (probably imported), but it's available.
The 180 W adapter can lead to throttling, which is why they were offering free 240 W adapters for many people with issues on AW 17 R2 and 15 R1. -
Also the battery wear out much faster. Missing power will come from the battery because of the flimsy weak 180w.Bubloo likes this.

Hey folks, I'm trying to downgrade my UHD screen to an FHD screen on an Alienware 17 R3. Do I have to acquire a whole new screen assembly, or am I able to just replace the LCD itself? If i need to get a new assembly, where can I find one?
-
I wouldn't like to wait 3 weeks just for they send me the adapter. However, this is the most security option I have. Thank you very much my friends for spending your time helping me!
-
New BIOS released. Looks like it's a power management sleep state tweak of some kind:
-
Hi bud,
you'll need to call them directly on the alienware support to be able to get the 240W. I live in Brazil too and their options about alienware are hide from the main website. It´s going to be expenseive and if it is going to be imported from the US, it will take some time.
I´m selling one of my Alienware 17 here in Brazil, it's the high specs options with the 980M and the overclockable CPU. If you know anyone who might buy one, tell me! -
Thanks bud, can I add you on facebook? I would to talk to you.

Hello, I own an AW 17 R3 with i7 6700HQ
I did a prime95 stress test and noticed a 20 degree difference between core 1 and core 4. That seemed huge. Also, I'm experiencing a big thermal throttling(3.5GHZ to 2.85GHz) very quickly. Look at the image attached. Any fix for this? What might be going wrong? Thanks
P.S. - Which is the best cooler pad for AW 17 R3?Last edited: Jul 26, 2016 -

I think you might need to repaste the CPU, a 20 degC difference in temperature between cores suggests an uneven layer of paste or heatsink that is not sitting flat on the CPU. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut has been the best paste I've used. -
Definitely repaste as that is very abnormal.
Click on my Signature where it says, "6820HK ...." to be directed to the Grizzly Conductonaut thread if you're open to going liquid metal. That 20C difference you're experience will reverse to a ~20C drop in temp
Here's just one example out of the many that I have.
Before -> After
Laptop Cooler wise...
...because it has an aluminum surface, big holes, quiet, sturdy and it suits the 17R3 well....

There's a new "urgent" Thunderbolt Controller Driver Update:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/br...ls?productCode=alienware-17-r3&driverId=D91CC -
Weird, it doesn't show up on my driver page for some reason.

I do not think these laptop coolers works on the AW17. Most of them are not big enough to cover the bottom part where air is pulled from the coolers. I've tested some and the only thing that worked pretty well was a X stand mande of aluminum, it just simply removes the computer from the table.
I noticed +/- an 8 to 10 percent drop while heavy load.
I bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Steklo-Alumi...&qid=1469702967&sr=8-25&keywords=laptop+stand -
Actually they do work and very well I might add, granted it's a good quality one like the one I've recommended and use.
If you do a search, you'll find my before and after screenshots showing the decrease in temps.
They do work. Proven many times over.
I am also familiar with the X stand and would recommend that any day vs having the laptop just sit flat on the desk / surface.
Laptop coolers do work.
