Sometimes you'll get "Boot Media inaccessible" errors suddenly, so I'm AHCI and no problems.

I got the controller switched to AHCI and then disabled Secure Boot, booted Windows, restarted, enabled Secure Boot and rebooted Windows. First couple of boots were good and then I had 3 boots in a row where there was an issue loading the TPM driver again.

That's the TPM bug. For this @VICKYGAMEBOY has a solution when dell engineers couldn't find the solution.
Switch to legacy and boot windows. After logging in, restart and go to BIOS and enable UEFI with secure boot and TPM issue is solved.

Thanks. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it to boot in legacy. I believe because my OS is on a SSD and that is not a boot option in the BIOS.

Turn off secure boot first then, go to first line which says uefi, change it to legacy.
It should work in raid or ahci mode

That’s exactly what I did, but I could not get Windows 10 to boot. It couldn’t find boot device and I tried re-ordering or manually selecting boot devices.

I have the Alienware 17 R3. Ive had it for about a year now. I bought it as the display model at a Conn's. Everything seemed to work except I had to replace the battery 1 week in and the usbc / thunderbolt port never worked. It does not detect any devices that are plugged in. It provides power out. I cant find the TB3 in the device manager anywhere. And Im at a complete loss to were it would be in the BIOS. I have the latest bios that dell just put out. Anyone know if the Thunderbolt device shows up in our bios? I was thinking it was either disabled had wrong drivers installed that i also got from dell's website or the Thunderbolt was just dead. I installed ubuntu today and it shows not TB device detected. So im thinking disabled or dead. It was the floor display model so maybe there was some magic way i was supposed to flash this in some special order to get it online from being an original 17r3. oftware package version 17.2.71.250 aplication version 17.2.71.4 service version controller driver version and networking driver version all say unknown. I have used that usb to usb c adapter and put many things in the TB plug and it never even shows any of the devices are plugged in or removed. :( If anyone knows how to get to it in bios that would be awesome. Did it originally only recolonize TB devices and no usb devices?

    Thanks in advance
    Joe

I have a weird problem since over two weeks now.

My graphics card is always stuck at 135MHz (P8 state) and won't clock up. This suddenly happened since I closed the last game I've been playing (PoE). It's also not possible to adjust the clocks with evga precision.

In the meanwhile I've completely reinstalled windows 10 (17134 build) and updatet the Bios to 1.6.1 It doesn't matter which Intel/Nvidia driver combination I'm using (official and/or Dell driver. Always reinstalled using DDU). Currently using the latest one available. Playing on battery or AC also has no effect at all. Setting in the nvidia control panel the preferred graphics card to nvidia and energy usage to maximum power has no effect either.

I really don't know what else to do. I saw in the Nvidia forums that a lot of other user have experienced the same problem, but Nvidia released back in february a fix, which helps the graphics card to clock higher. Do you guys have any further ideas?

Make sure you're using dell/stable nvidia drivers since Win updates can install new drivers w/o needing new GFE and nvidia control panel. Disable win updates and also you need intel 6136 driver for better performance and reduced optimus stuttering.

I've tried the latest Intel and Nvidia driver provided by dell but without success. Over the last two years I always used the latest drivers from Nvidia without any problems.

So now the TPM is failing to start just about every time I boot the computer. I was not successful in switching to legacy boot as I could never get Windows to launch. I think it has to do with my SSD and the BIOS not being compatible in that mode (just a guess). Needless to say, kept getting message OS couldn't be found. I'm in AHCI mode now as well (I got it switched from RAID). What negative affects would it have if I just disabled the TPM firmware in the BIOS?

If you disable TPM you cant use bitlocker in a secure way anymore. but for normal everyday use? no downsides.

    Which BIOS version?
If you aren't using TPM then no difference at all. Home edition can't use TPM at all.

I just confirmed Bitlocker is not turned on so I may go ahead and disable TPM for now. This is so frustrating, but at least I'm not as bad off as some of the people that have installed 1.4.4 and 1.6.1 BIOS updates. I held on to 1.3.12 and upgraded the microcode / drivers manually until Dell gets their crap together and releases a BIOS update that doesn't screw everything up.

Hi, any idea how to fix this issue?

"This battery is temporary disable, please turn off the computer and Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility"

    Tried below.

    1. Draining Mobo for >30 secs and repowering up (as suggested fix in some computer with same error)
    2. Reflashing bios.
    3. Restoring previous working date.
    4. Cmos reseating.

    Any possible fix appreciated.

    BIOS A09

    TIA.

Hi there! i also have this problem with my Alienware 17r2, it happened right after repasting and updating, and now it's stuck at 135 mhz. All my video games run at 10-15 fps, did you find a solution? i've checked a lot of forums, including the oficial Nvidia Forums, and i have tried changin power options on nvidia, and on windows, but zero luck. did you manage to find a solution?

I had chat with nVidia support (I have exactly 100% same issue). removed only first part of chat (troubleshooting) and replaced names:

nVidia Support: Thank You for your patience. As I can see you have Win 10 64 bit with GeForce GTX 980M and 411.70 (the latest) driver version installed.
nVidia Support: Since you are facing this issue even after reinstalling the Windows, which is the last troubleshooting step in this case, this appeqars to be a faulty GPU.
nVidia Support: Please contact alienware and let them test this Laptop for hardware issues.
If this Laptop is faulty, please replace this Laptop now
SeveneduS: huh... thanks. seems my model discontinued.
    nVidia Support: Oh okay
    SeveneduS: have a nice day.
    nVidia Support:
Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.
Good Bye XXX, have a nice day.

Hey guys, I figured I would post here instead of making a new thread about some issues I have had with my 17 R3 after I updated to BIOS 1.6.1 as well as Win 10 1803...

Long story short my system runs fine, but every now and then I would not get my system to reboot without it "losing" my M.2 Plextor 512GB SSD drive. Basically it would reboot and that drive would not show back up, as I would have to go into the BIOS and switch to AHCI mode (I run in RAID mode usually), shut down, cold boot into BIOS, verify my M.2 SSD was there and then switch to RAID mode and it would all be fine.

I also have run into it where if my system went into hibernation/fast resume sleep when it came back up certain devices were messed up, most notably my sound on the machine would not work and trying to bring up even the volume control would not produce sound or allow me to change the volume. I might add that USB devices were sketchy after coming back up as well.

Now as to a "fix" I noticed on one of my other systems, a Asus Rampage III Extreme X58 motherboard, that as of the 1803 update it was totally messed up for sleep mode. The fix for that system was disabling VT-D (also known as VT with Directed IO), which has to do with virtual machines having direct access to hardware.

Well, since I figured it would be worth seeing if that was a problem on my 17R3 I tried disabling that in BIOS and low-and-behold, all of the aforementioned issues disappeared. I have rebooted a dozen or so times, slept the machine, even hibernated the machine and upon recovery everything just works and I have yet had it "lose" my M.2 SSD drive.

I just figured I would mention this as a possible work-around if people are having issues, just disable VT for Directed IO in BIOS and see if your problems go away.

No I'm still stuck with this issues. It happens suddenly after closing a game. I didn't do any repasting.

I'm surprised how many people with different gpus are facing the same problem according to the Nvidia forum. That's why I doubt that my gpu is faulty...

Maybe I will try to reinstall everything once more. Hopefully it will run otherwise I have to look for a new notebook.

Does gaming mode or adding apps in graphics settings to use high performance GPU worked for you? I use that otherwise some games use intel and cause stuttering mid games when nvidia turns ON and gets stuck at 135MHz on core and 300MHz on memory.

Since the Windows 10 October 2018 update I have been having almost non-stop problems with my 17R3's ethernet and wi-fi adaptors (both Killer adaptors). Internet just drops for no reason even when all my non Win10 devices work fine with the same wi-fi/direct connections.

Downgrade to v1803 and run Killer Uninstaller tool from Killer website and disable win updates using win update blocker present in WUMT wrapper script from majorgeeks.

    New dell touchpad driver:
    Fixes:
    - N/A

    Enhancements:
    - Enhanced security design of the driver.
    Versjon
    Versjon 19.2.17.70, A11

I had to extract the driver package and then extract with Winrar in order to install this driver. Follow this instruction (I skipped the device manager step and just ran the setup.exe from within the 64 Bit folder)
If you just double click the driver package as described by dell it trows an error (at least on windows 10 version 1809)

I had that issue with a ATI card once and I used an overclocking tool to bump up the clocks a bit and all of a sudden the clocks worked normally. Not sure why they got stuck. It happen a couple times and bumping the clock fixed it. I always returned it to stock clocks afterward.

Did you use Rufus? Secure boot must be disabled and once its installed turn secure boot back to ON. Check if SGX is disabled in BIOS or not?

Morning all. Glad to See this thread is still open! Still have and love my Alienware 17 R3.

Wanted to upgrade the storage on my laptop, and I'd been keeping an eye on m.2 2280 deals. I think I saw a deal on an m-key'd Intel unit being $200, but I thought my system was "B" key'd, and it wouldn't fit. So when I saw both NewEgg and Amazon had the WD Blue 2TB B and M key'd m.2 SSD for $240, I thought that might be as cheap as it would get and I bought one, as well as an enclosure for what I thought was the existing 256GB m.2 SSD so I could clone the data onto the bigger stick.

WD arrives, I take it home, and while uninstalling my existing Samsung 256GB I realize it's an M key... so I've bought the slower format WD when I didn't have to. But at least it's compatible, so I remove the 256GB, install the 2TB, and go to move the data. Only the enclosure I bought is wrong, will NOT work with M-key'd Samsung, and I start freaking out at how stupid I was. I get myself together, figure I'll just copy the games and stuff from the 256GB onto a 1TB external 2.5" SATA, and then put the 2TB back in, partition and format it, and copy the data back from the external 1TB to the 2TB stick.

Do all that, go to run Division 2 which is one of the games that was installed on the 256GB m.2, now copied to the 2TB m.2 with Windows Explorer (just copied the files by selecting directories and doing a copy and paste), and now Division 2 doesn't seem to be opening. After a couple attempts to run the game, killing the process each time, it finally runs a DirectX installer that goes REALLY slow... it gets to be 10pm at night when I gotta be up at 5am the next day, I'm exhausted, and I give up.

So I ask you, my fellow Alienware owners. Did I just do the copy wrong using Windows Explorer? I did do a "verify files" in the Ubi app, and it said the files were fine. And while the 2x pipe of the B and M keyed WD is slower than the Samsung's M keyed unit, I refuse to believe the game isn't even starting because of the SSD speed. I must have mucked it up.

If you can suggest a better way to move the data, or if you really think I should return the WD 2TB... I'd appreciate your advice. So frustrating when you are a tech, you think you know what you are doing, and this sort of issue comes up.

Yup. Still the F drive, and if I leave it alone for SEVERAL minutes, it even "connects" (that screen takes a LONG time), and gets me to the "character selection" screen. But where it might take a minute to go through startup, loading, and such process before... now it at least feels like it takes 10 minutes. It's REDICULOUSLY slow.

I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling Division 2, but if it doesn't speed up I'm gonna consider this a lemon and send it back to Amazon. At which point I gotta decide if I go with the Intel 660 2TB m.2 4x unit or what.

Verify the game files and if that doesn't work reinstall. Sometimes files don't get redownloaded when a game is copied. I used to transfer game data all the time. Slow internet FTW!

Did you install latest IRST(Rapid storage driver)? Uninstall older drivers before installing new ones.

    Thanks for sharing this..........

The IME driver's description says for R4 and R5 support. Did it install on the R3?

Also, I did try that Dell/Nvidia driver but it wouldn't install on my 980M (I have the latest GeForce driver from Nvidia instead). Are there any benefits from this specific Dell/AW nVidia driver?

Installed with no issues both drivers. It's not the main ME driver, but the INTEL HECI. They are for the r3 also, since it is on the driver pages for the r3.

You have to uninstall your current nvidia driver in order to install the driver provided by dell.
