    I have m17 R4, BIOS 1.0.8, CPU i7-6700HQ, GPU GTX1060
XTU Core undervolt -0.85 and max temps with OCCT run for 20 min came in at 90, 82, 87, 83
Other than undervolt, all stock with build date of Dec 2016
Should I be looking at repaste? Never done before and other than the max temps am happy

we actually know very little at this point until the the 7th gen are shipping with 1080gtx ... as it sits now just have to wait. I'm not convinced the 'HOT' will be solved with the 7th gen... my nib (was 2 days ago) 6th gen is in the 90's.

XTU CPU Stress Test & AIDA64

Your boost clocks are only hitting 2.8ghz. Your temps are low for that reason and it could be due to the borked bios 1.0.9.

Test Heaven and Aida64 / OCCT CPU stress test simultaneous because of this shared heatpipes / heatsink design. For harder cpu stress with cpu / gpu. Check the box with only stress FPU in Aida64. Uncheck the rest.

Your maximum clock speeds are hitting 3.6 on your original image not 2.8. Look at the maximum speed on the original image you posted. Bios 1.9 gave me the same results as 1.08 and I have the same setup as you apart from 1080p screen. Look at posts on this forum and be assured that your core temp variance are around 4c which is good.

Used to be only a TN display I think, now it's a TN+WVA. Either it's indeed a new screen or they simply relabeled it.

There are 2 memory slots. It either comes with two 8GB cards for a total of 16GB, or two 16GB cards for a total of 32GB. If you want to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB you have to remove the existing 8GB memory cards and replace them with 16GB cards.

Do all of you have the two finger scroll problem, where it goes the opposite direction when you scroll slowly but works just fine when you scroll quickly? (I'm not talking about the inverted scroll option). I'm wondering if it's an Alienware thing or a Windows 10 thing? Might MSI and all other Windows 10 computers have the same problem?

Don't let it fool you. Once he had hit his max clocks of 3.6 it throttled down to 2.8. When doing an OCCT test it should be at max clocks on all four cores at all time. It could be Dell's bios manipulation to keep temps cool but with performance deficiency. His temps in the 60s were not true when under max load which was later proven when his temps were near 90 in the other tests.

so...I just got my brand new alienware17r4 6820hk with 1080gtx qhd. manufacture date 2017.

screen is still suffering grey horizon line.

My suggestion is don't order any QHD with 6820hk to avoid defected qhd panel.

I've noticed that the 7700HQ and 7820HK are now showing on the Alienware UK site with the QHD screen.

Are these likely to be the new screen?

So let me understand a few things on my new 17R4:

You need to enable CPU Performance Mode in BIOS in order for the 6820HK to run at maximum clock speeds? i.e. 3.6ghz single core.

Performance Fan Mode, is this just running the fans at Max RPM's?

I have the Toshiba 512gb NVMe, it gets to 75C, anyone know when thermal limiting begins on this? I'll run some benchmarks on speed this evening.

My bios is 1.09 and works great intelextreme shows no power throttling with this bios.

Is hynix RAM really that bad compared to something like corsair? I believe that's the brand of RAM in the current R4. Also is it worth the trouble returning my R4 or opening a support ticket to request the 7820hk cpu compared to the 6820hk?

I'm pondering the same question. We're expecting the updated models to be announced Monday, if the new QHD panel also proves to be an IPS then I may attempt to return my unit for an upgrade.

That's exactly what I'm thinking too. I just received my 17 r4 3 days ago. The only thing I've done was test it using firestrike and heaven. Haven't used it since so im debating just returning it and ordering the newer version with the 128GB SSD and 1TB HD to save money and buy a better SSD in the process. Maybe even save me the RAM as well if the brand isn't so great. I've always been used to corsair RAM as the performance has always been reliable for me.

Alienware use Samsung, micron, and Hynix on the r4 17.
If I had a choice I would have Samsung, then Hynix, then Micron, but really they are all fine.

Alienware won't replace the 6820hk with 7820hk as that would require a new motherboard including gpu. If you really wanted kaby lake you'd need to return it.

So after updating to sBIOS 1.0.12 and doing the new 1080_OC graphics upgrade, I definitely noticed that temps after 2 hrs gaming (GTA V and BF1 both maxed out with MSAA, AA) for CPU cores were 85 deg C for Core 0 and 2 and 81 for Cores 1 & 3 (previously high 70's). GPU went up from 60 deg C to 63.
I then tried reverting back to 1.0.8, and the temps were consistently 83 deg for Cores 0 & 2 and 81 deg C for Cores 1 & 3, with GPU at 66 deg C (so a little cooler for CPU, a bit warmer for GPU...).

BUT, the problem with 1.0.8 was frame stuttering with in-game fps down to approx. 20 fps (lasting approximately 2-3 minutes) occurring every 20 minutes or so in game. Unplayable when it happens.

Anyone else observe this? I'm thinking of rolling back up to 1.0.12 (as I didn't notice it occurring with 12...) @iunlock - have you noticed this at all with 1.0.8? (I know you mentioned it with 1.0.12)

As for my screen issue (gap above the word Alienware), Dell also said that mine would be included in the list of replacements likely to be mid March, and was told to wait for further instructions for replacement. Hopefully this means a new laptop replacement with i7-7820HK :D (...one can only live in hope...)

It may be that Dell put in useless SSD's(ssd's that does not match this internal design). No reason to need thermal pads or the like to cool down ssd's in a large 17 inch laptop chassis.
If these SSD's getting such a high temperature as +80 degrees with virtually no load.... Then I think Dell should take a second look at the internal design. Or sell other and better ssd's.

I have weird issue with USB Type-C on the back. Any (Repeat ANY) device I connect disconnects after a short while with USB Device Malfunctioned message whereas those devices work absolutely fine in Side USB-C, and both USB-A ports!?

Its really bugging me out as I can't connect my hub at the back.

My USB selective suspension is disabled and all devices have 'Allow Windows to turn device off to save power' unchecked!

Anyone else have this issue with Type-C at the back of your A17R4?

Edit: The device works perfectly fine at full USB 3 speeds until the error comes ~ 30 secs to few hours!

My Toshiba ssd had elevated temps as well though not as high as yours ~ 65 degrees under no load. I installed a tiny heatsink which lowered the idle temps to about 58 degrees, admittedly still much higher than my Samsung Evo 960 idle temps of 42 degrees

    Negative.

YOUR SSD is experiencing high temperatures; therefore, by all logic, you need to inspect the SSD, troubleshoot via tech support, or send it to the depot.

Again, Dell doesn't need to redesign anything... matter of fact, it's the same design as every other system on the market. You are the only one, perhaps a few more, that are experiencing this issue, so it's isolated. This is not the TN banding issue, CPU heating issue, CPU throttle issue, 4k light bleeding, etc.... issues that are not isolated.

To be fair, as it has been mentioned, the SSD heat issue is an isolated scenario.

It has nothing to do with the design. All my SSD's run fine and very cool.

Then again, say no to toshiba. I just got two in both of my XPS's. Bummer... Bare bones would have been nice than to be stuck with two rubbish toshiba sticks.

Glad to have Samsungs in them now.

Maybe something is wrong with SSD firmware. If the second SSD mostly Samsung or Hynix don't observe high temp then its a glitch. It could be sensing the airflow temp inside the PC rather than drive temperature.

    1. should i get to BIOS 1.0.8 or the newest one (1.0.12) ? im going to use it 60% gaming 35% editting video and photos, 5% for others
    2. thermal in normal usage is between 44~50C, i stress it with AIDA64 and with HWmonitor the highest thermal in every CPU reach about 76 72 77 73, the thermal difference shows about 3~5C but only for a second sometimes it jump up to 12 degree difference in core 0 and 1 (couldnt see the others cause its too fast lol). should i repaste it?
    3. when its first connect to internet the display just blink like 3~5 times (on off on off etc) but its normal right now no blink at all, is that an update or defect ?(i believe i didnt see any permission for any update before the blink started)
    4. get some bugs, it doesnt want to charge fuly 100%, always show 1 minute left to fullly charge, is this normal?

and maybe any suggestion what else that i have to check ?

    thank you
    regards
    calvin
