Just wondering if anyone is interested in a Custom nameplate for their AW machines?
I live in the AW 13 R3 thread and have just put together a small project to get some custom nameplates made up.
Take a look at Any love for a Custom AW Nameplate? (Poll)
and get a vote in!
Cheers

I received my 6820HK last week with the UHD and GTX 1070 and the screen is gorgeous. Only complaint I have is that the minimum brightness setting is still really bright. Its sort of annoying at night in a dark room. I wonder if dell would consider making the min brightness lower in a newer bios revision.

Hi guys anyone here who already have the new units with the kabylake cpu. How are the Core temps?

Greetings everyone,
First post and long time apple user.
About to switch to the aw17. With this new info, should I wait till feb for the revised aw 17 w unlocked 1080? Or can I safely purchase one now and have this issue be resolved via new bios update or the sort?
PS. Thanks to everyone providing invaluable tips and feedback and kudos for making alienware respond to the heatsink issue.

Voltage limit will not be unlocked on notebooks. What's being validated right now is a higher TDP bios that allows more wattage consumption (total power consumption).
Naturally, with higher TDP limits, you can expect to see higher voltages being reached / sustained.DeeX and Pete Light like this. -

@GSXRMIKE04, thanks for the input. Just ordered my aw17 1080gtx from Dell France, should get it around end of mth.
Dell rep didnt seem to be aware of the heatsink revision so Im not sure what Ill end up with.
Skimped out on storage to order the samsung 960 512gb and will swap out TN screen for the AUO UHD that @ SUADE8880 kindly linked to.
Now have to order all the bits and pieces for the repaste, all thanks to @ iunlock. Never opened up a laptop/desktop before. Should be mildly interesting if not utterly terrifying for a total noob.
All seems like a lot of work for a $3000 laptop

Watch this video just to familiarize yourself with the process and keep as a reference in case you are having trouble figuring out how to unhook something.
Of course use iunlocks post and videos on the post to help as well. I used these as a main reference when disassembling as they are pretty all-encompassing.
The process is simple but each step has a correct way to do it and if you go slow and safe the first time can take well over an hour.
As for the screws you will need maybe 2 sizes of small phillips head screwdrivers. For the heatsink and some other screws the smaller of the two will help alot. When you are unscrewing them press down a moderate amount while you turn them. This will help you get the torque you need if they are tightened alot. You want to make sure you have an ideal size screwdriver and apply as much downward force as you need to turn the screws with the blades locked in place.
There are a few types of connectors to understand:
1) You will see ribbon cables that have a small plastic part up against them where you unplug them. To get them out the plastic lifts up about a millimeter on each side. At that point the ribbon will be lose enough to pull out.
2)There are I think 2 connectors that have a clear tape over them and you have to lift that tape and make sure the metal bar on the end of the tape that lifts up comes up too. Once that metal bar is lifted the connector should slide out in the direction opposite of where the tape and bar lifted.
3)The hard drive cable (where it attaches to the motherboard). You should be able to lift it straight up with the black band attached to it.
4)There is a cable in the back area covered by the plastic part that goes around the vents area. This cable has a black tape attached to it near the end. You will have to pull it straight up. This was scary for me as i could not find a way to lift the plastic part that plugs in and had to rely on pulling up on the cable itself using the black tape. I don't know if that's the right way to do it but I assume it is given that it uses the same black tape as the hard drive cable. Either way I have taken apart this thing 3 times now and nothing has gone wrong with that and in the video it looks like the guys does it that way as well.
The rest should be pretty straight forward with the info from the post, service manuals, and videos. It does help alot to have a plastic tool to help lift and separate the plastic thing over the back of the computer where the cooling vents are. I didn't have a tool so i used a few cards that are like credit cards and filed em down a bit to make them easier to wedge in there. I also used these to lift the wireless card power cables as iunlock shows in his video.Last edited: Jan 18, 2017 -
How do.
Just an update with the 'AW Custom Nameplate' poll results.
After a day we have reached the goal of 25 (26 members votes currently) to get these custom nameplates manufactured! Can't wait for this!
I will be leaving the poll open for the 7 days for anyone who wants to jump onto the first order
Cheers

Hello,
Just want to know: how 's the 4k display of 17 r4 on sRGB and Adobe RGB? Is there a review of this panel.
Thx -
Could yall do me a favor.
Anyone that has had pads with the plastic on them and still has pics, please post them in a PM to me.
If you cannot PM me then please post them here. -
Just ordered a "certified refurbished" AW 17 r4 skylake from the outlet. I7 6700 hq, gtx 1070, 256 gb NVMe class 40 ssd, 1 TB 7200 rpm, 1080 IPS panel, no gsync, 16 GB 2400 ram, 2 year support...for $1439 after tax...wow. I was nervous about the heat sink issues, but for that price I won't complain if it needs a repaste/undervolt/etc.
Arrives in 1 week. That's another perk of using the outlet.Last edited: Jan 19, 2017 -

AUO B173ZAN01.0 17.3" - 100% sRGB, 100% Adobe RGB, 96% DCI-P3 - 4K 60Hz - 390+ Nits
Which is literally one of the best looking and most accurate 17.3" 4K laptop monitors for productivity and photo work. However, I believe it was older stock, as my monitor was manufactured Week 0, 2015. It looks quite amazing, to be honest.
However, Alienware also has another 17.3" 4K monitor they've been using more recently. The LQ173D1JW31 (Sharp SHP1446) 17.3" - 100% sRGB, 95% Adobe RGB, 90% DCI-P3 - 4K 60Hz - 370+ Nits
Basically, they're both extremely close, and to get the best out of them, they need to be calibrated with specialized tools. Side by side, you'd be hard pressed to find the difference with your bare eyes. However, the Sharp has a slightly faster pixel response time, something like 25.6ms (vs the 27 of the AUO panel), in case that matters. I've seen these 2 displays side by side, showing the same images, and both calibrated and I'd be happy with either one, though I do enjoy the 100% Adobe RGB stat mostly for bragging rights. -
So I'm currently running a stable under-volt of -0.150V on my GTX1080/6820HK, I haven't tried any further and was wondering if anyone constantly runs theirs with more of an under-volt? Also, on stock clocks with this under-volt applied I get an hour long OCCT with results of 63, 65, 62, 61 deg C. If I repaste, will this help to reduce the fan noise as I notice the fans get quite loud even just playing Dota 2 (the CPU hits around 60 deg C during this). Cheers!

Ok I am about to order mine tomorrow
Before doing it, I just wanted some last input from you folks:
1- No worries on getting the 6820HK and not waiting for the 7820HK ? (not bottlenecking the gtx1080 and no real performance gain?)
2- I'll have it with the QHD screen. When plugged onto my 1920x1200 monitor or my 1080p TV, will I get more fps out of it than using the internal screen ? I guess playing at 1440p might impact fps a lot.
3- Can I rest assured that I will be playing games at ultra settings for the next 2 years at least?
Thanks again, I am soooo afraid to pull my credit card tomorrow, I really want to be sure not to make a mistake lol -

Just got my new AWL 17 R4. Ordered it 1/8/17, received it yesterday. Playing GTAV for 10 minutes got me these temps: BTW i'm on the latest Bios.
Running CinBenchR15 got me these:
These fans were pushing hard! Seems like dell is not re-engineering these laptops are selling refurbs as new. Very upset. I really don't want to tear apart this new laptop. Any advice?Last edited: Jan 19, 2017 -

Anyone else notice if you put the laptop in dedicated only mode theres a red horizontal line across the bottom like 1 or 2 pixels above the bottom row on the UHD (4k) screen. It only happens when in dedicated gpu mode (fn+f7) mode. Still its quite annoying.

I got a French rep yesterday before ordering and he told me that all issues where fixed.. Your core values are really high. I hope it's not a lie, when don't have team lhz in France to help us!

Hi all, so I am planning to change to the Alienware 17 R4.
However, after doing some homework, it seems that I cannot find a GTX 1080 laptop of any brand that does not have a G Sync display.
Does the GTX 1080 for laptop supports only G Sync? Mainly because of battery life.
I need my laptop to be able to last on like 5-6 hours of battery life doing everyday work and on Intel Graphics. From what I heard, G Sync displays need the Nvidia GPU activated which can drain the battery quickly and making it difficult to get 3 hours of battery life, even with a beefy legal 99Whr Battery.
If not, I just have to go with a Non G Sync Panel with GTX 1070. -
Hey guys, just wondering what my options are for reducing fan speed while gaming.. Is it only either reduce the video settings of the game or repaste the CPU/GPU so it runs cooler? Playing Dota 2 on max settings runs at about 50 deg C and the fans are at 4,000 to 4,200 RPM which is just a bit too loud for me. Sometimes I'd almost rather the CPU hit 70 and the fans were quieter or is this a terrible idea?
Cheers! -
2. Yes you will get more FPS running your monitor.
3. You will have a decent PC in two years.
Get one! -

I contacted Dell and I might have them do a repaste with the stuff that iunlock has used. I might also send it to iunlock as well and have him do it. I've ripped apart laptops before, but from my experience they are very touchy. What upsets me is that as a consumer who has paid around $1500 for a laptop we shouldn't even have to be doing this.. -
Well I ordered mine today (finally) and I really hope it will come new and without heat issues or I will unleash hell on them.
I kept the chat between me and the rep saying it's all fixed.
Anyone knows how to check if the laptop is a refurb?
Estimated arrival for mine : 6st of Feb. -
Mine was in a 'build' state for like 6-7 days. From the time I ordered it and got it, it was 10 days. They did goof on the shipping, so they sent me a $100 credit.
-
I ordered mine in France too, rep told me there were no issues whatsoever with the laptops... keeping my expectations low atm.
Ordered everything necessary for a repaste, liquid metal, thermal pads, etc... I would have happily sent it to team lhz otherwise.
Let me know how yours turned out to be.

Alienware 99whr with gsync will last around 3 hours (a bit more when you optimize and tune your undervolt).
Remember that there are four LHz members in the US, pick whoever is closest to you in order to save shipping costs.
The whole internet and consumer media is based off the sRGB colorspace only. -

Have been out of the loop for a while, any news on the QHD debacle and the striping problems? Any fixed panels in sight?
