Hello guys I have been out of this site for a few months now. I stilll own the laptop in my sig. I have a question: did they ever release a VBIOS for the gimped video cards? I remember they lowered the voltage or something making it less powerful? Did someone come up with a fix?

Wait until they send you the correct one, then you will have a good laugh. My refurb 17R4 came with a 10ft 14awg cable rated for 125v@15a. I could run a room air conditioner off of that thing.

Well, looks my faulty keyboard was actually a faulty motherboard. No replacement parts available so it's had to go back for a refund.

I've already ordered another model the same spec to replace it.

If this one has issues then that will be my third.

Rather look at Cpu Package temp. This sensor are more correct and showing nice 103C :bigconfused:Almost new record!! I mean the max temp record is 105C. This with a wimpy Cpu Package Power around 34-43W. Take a look also on PCH temp. Only +83C  Yeah, I can see it's a progress on the factory.

    I posted a review here. http://www.ultrabookreview.com/15147-alienware-17-r4-review/
Note that I only mentioned the issue I'm having with freezing, but I didn't let it affect my overall score since Dell claims it's a hardware defect. I get my replacement next week, so we'll see if that's really the case. I'm assuming since many others here aren't having the issue, it's probably just a defect.

Hey I purchased an Alienware R4 17 1920x1080 screen and want to upgrade it to the 2560 QHD GSync 120HZ Screen but found out the display ribbon cable is 30pin vs 40pin that I need to make the swap. Anyone know if an older Alienware display pin would work in its stead? I've had a nightmare of calling Dell, leaving their twitter support messages, e-mailing just to get re-routed back to their 1-800 hotline to get the stupid Display Ribbon Part. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have an AW 17 R4 GTX 1070 i7 6700hq. M2 SSD, I got refurbished from Dell outlet for a good price. Whenever I shut it down, it takes a good 5 minutes for it to finally shut down. I have another AW 15 r2 with the same issue. I've uninstalled the non-essential dell programs and it still does this. You guys the same? I have another gaming laptop that is non-alienware with lesser specs/slower SSD/Memory and it is almost instant with shut downs/ start ups. I've been racking my head to which program(s) are causing this and I feel like its the Alienware fx lighting. I think its AW exclusively that does this and this shouldn't be happening. I don't see anyone really mention this. Is there a way to make it more responsive?

Alienwares have always taken a few more seconds too boot and shutdown in my experience. Some people disable the freefall sensor and have better luck.

Hey did Dell have you run some tests on your unit using Dell Support Assist? Did it fail any of them?

BTW, there's a new Alienware Command Center download available. Updated yesterday. Not sure on the changes.

They ran them but they passed. I warned them ahead of time on that because their tests only last about 15 minutes - not enough time for heat to build up. I basically had to prove it to them by playing games while they were remoting in. The call took 2 hours...

Hello everyone. Long time lurker here. I just purchased an R4 and have it all set up. The temps are very good stock under load and idle. The machine was built less than 2 weeks ago. No plans for repaste at this time. I know this might sound like a silly question but what do I use to make an external USB factory backup? Is Respawn still a thing? If so where is it located? Or do I use the dell recovery option to make a factory image? Thanks for any help and feedback.

What kind of temps are you getting? Mine goes up to the high 80's-90c when I play Overwatch, mid 80's for lighter games like Dota 2. I've had mine since Tuesday. I think you'll want to repaste after a few days or a week with it. Mine came with a dead pixel though. One tiny blue pixel that only really shows on a black screen, but it's there and I always notice little things like that. It's a shame because I think I had a really beautiful screen otherwise, bright, great resolution, and minimal to no backlight bleed.

Finally got support on my freezing issues. It's only been two weeks.
    Next business day my ass!

Motherboard and heatsink replacement by a technician at my home next monday.

It's a bit annoying but I can't complain much. We don't even have Alienware in Portugal so just getting it fixed at my home is already pretty good!

I am in the same position as you... Last night I noticed 4 alienware program icons listed under Start, which ONE reports as 'Create USB recovery'. I replaced the original 7200 HD with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD, which went without incident, BUT I noticed there were 1 (or 2) hidden partitions on the original drive, that didn't get recreated on the SSD. One was ~11G, which I ASSume is the recovery partition. I am thinking I will need to restore the original drive before attempting to create the recovery media. I also do not know for sure what size USB drive is required. I ordered a 32G and am hoping for the best.

So far it stays around 63-68C under load. I've only played fallout 4, Final Fantasy 6, and some Metro 2033 so far Fans kick in pretty quick. I run the i7 7700 and 1070gtx. Everything stock.

I'm a tad OCD about recovery option on my laptops. I can't find anything about current ways of making a factory image back up.

I do this too. I have a bootable Windows PE with Macrium at all times. It works great for SSDs and HDDs and is good for backups or cloning. I got through dozens of laptops a year and this has been perfect for me. Just make sure encryption is off otherwise I don't think it recognizes the drive. You can also run a local backup, but it's probably better to not backup the OS you are booting from.

Why not just turn your clock speeds down to 3.4Ghz? I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure it'll lower your temps.

I'm using hwinfo64 and Intel XTU also shows your temps. I underclocked on Intel XTU by 0.5 and now I stay around 60c playing Dota, I'll see how cool I can stay in other games but it's very promising! I haven't repasted and put the thermal pads on yet either, but undervolting has really helped.

Macrium Reflect (and Acronis before that) are life savers man; I generally never have to re install windows because of regular imaging. My last build ran for 3 years on the same Win 7 install ... never a hitch, ran as great as it did on day one even after 3 years ... if I happened to run across something troubling ... driver issues, general failures, etc. .. I'd simply restore the latest image and keep rocking ...

Takes diligence but works so good ... and the fact that software like Macrium Reflect is free for personal use just gives me ongoing faith in the software industry and those who make the softs ...

Bios 1.0.9 Alienware 17 r4 cpu core speed windows creator update.

Does anyone notice the cpu cores only turbo to what ever you set 4 cores to run at in bios overclocking.
    So for example, I set

    1 x cpu 4.0
    2 x cpu 3.8
    3 x cpu 3.7
    4 x cpu 3.6

when the system runs on 1, 2, 3 cores they only ever Turbo to 3.6. It's as if it's stuck at 3.6 ghz.

I'm pretty sure this Issue is new and wondering if windows creator update has something to do with it (unlikely but just saying)...

Having run every skylake bios, bar 1.0.14, In benchmarks 1.0.9 and 1.0.8 are the best for performance with 1.0.9 just beating1.0.8.

I've tried reinstalling the bios, can anyone running on bios 1.0.9 check their system to see if the core speeds are overclocking higher then what ever you set 4 cores to run at.

"Those of us who work in systems know the true value of a backup" I used Acronis True Image 2 years ago. I make a daily image of the main hard disk in a NAS and it only takes about 20 minutes (with 60 days of history) With Acronis I never had any problem. Macrium Reflect is better? What difference there are? Only that it is free?

    I use Gandalf’s Win10PE x64 to restore http://windowsmatters.com/tag/winpe/

Hey All, I just upgraded my 17 R4 from the M.2 Toshiba 256 gb SSD to a Samsung 500 gb 960 evo M.2 SSD (I already had the 960 evo on hand, so used it as I needed more space). I used the Samsung Migration software to clone the Toshiba m.2 256 gb to the 960 evo. No problems, everything boots, and works just fine. However, the Samsung Magician Software doesn't recognize the 960 evo? Says its unidentified??? Does anyone know how to rectify this? I have the 1.05 BIOS, and didn't change anything in the BIOS, but it does reconise the 960 evo on the Main BIOS page. Here is a pic of the Magician software (sorry for the horrible pic). Thnx in Advance....

@wldrhino Go to Bios and change from Raid mode to Ahci mode. Then, start Windows in "Safe mode" 1 time and then start Windows 10 again normally.

It is the same with the 6700hq. With bios 1.0.9 cpu stays in the 4 core multiplier. And bios 1.0.9 has the best performance in every game i have tested it with. Even turning on speed shift and letting the processor handle its turbo rather than windows had lower performance in 2 core games than 1.0.9 using its locked 4core multiplier.

I have not tested 1.0.14 either.

Just to calirfy all the information is correct however im almost certain he means undervolt by 0.05V or -50mV.

Yup, I undervolting by 0.5 runs noticeably cooler, even without repasting. I think anywhere from 0.45-1.5 should be ok with Intel XTU, but stress test your underclock anyway.

But undervolting and underclocking are two different things. You just mean undervolting. And -0.5 volts would cut your cpus voltage in half or more and it would certainly not work. For the 6th gen cpus people undervolt usually from -0.05 to -0.15 volts or -50 to -150mV.

Yep. I found a -0.5 offset works well on my 7820HK and I can do it from Intel's program rather than the bios.

Problem with Intel is the undervolt doesn't stick. You might think it's working all the time once you set it but look again. After several restarts of the computer you open up Intel XTU and it will show no voltage undervolting.

Yea, the video I saw mentioned that, but he saved it as a profile and got it to apply. He was on the 6820HK 17 R4.

You say you undervolt with 500mV or in other words 0.5v. Can you tell me what load voltage your chips use in fully load and with what clock speed? Could you please run CINEBENCH_R15 + Hwinfo64 or Hwmonitor and post your results? Thanks
Edit. @iunlock can your BGA chips run with 500mv undervoltage? And with what clock speed?
