    Thanks! That means a lot.

I got a different monitor from the Dell Precision M 7710, part number 2RCX9. This is a GLOSSY version of the 2DK4K screen from 17R3, B173ZAN01.0 by AUO. http://laptopmedia.com/review/alien...ng-notebook-no-matter-what/#display-and-sound

I owned the 17R3 with the 2DK4K and thought that was most vivid, brightest monitor I've ever seen. But the anti-glare was so aggressive it drove me mad. I use 100% scaling, and the graininess of the anti-glare looks like dead pixel grease smeared all over the screen. I sometimes do design work on the pixel level and I couldn't do my work properly.

I have both the 15R3 and the 17R4 and I'm still deciding which to keep.

In my old 17 r3 the monitor was LG. You can see all monitor information with HWinfo.

Look this, Is all my UHD monitor (Sharp CK7T7€LQ173D1) information on my 17 r4 laptop. You can see it with your Service Tag in this web: Support> Product Support> System configuration

If only we have the option for the 4K touch again, I don't even care about the touch but the glossy/glare finish is just so nice

Thank you QuillP, a couple of questions, do you know why Dell ships 17r4's with bios set up to raid even though the drives are not set up to work in raid? Do you think it is better to go ahci or just leave as is and not use the Samsung Magician at all? It does detect my 850 Evo and I believe that is so because it is not the boot drive. It seems that I cannot do firmware or drivers updates on the 960 Evo without the Magician software. Other than that, everything is working great and both drives are detected correctly in the bios and the Intel rapid storage.

I am 100% positive now that the stuttering issue is due to thermal issues. Mine was fine last week, playing Mass Effect Andromeda without much issues (after a repaste). But a few days a dell technician changed my keyboard and I think he bend the motherboard a little bit and now it started stuttering :( Starting up hwinfo showed me a massive 10c difference between cores... I can tell you that wasn't present before the keyboard exchange.

He also broke the internal power cable (duh), so they are sending someone to repair that too. So this weekend I'm opening the laptop up again for a checkup. I already did a repaste, otherwise I'd be calling dell again.

Even with these issues though, service is better than Asus or MSI. I can still remember my dad's brand new asus laptop being repaired after 1 month or so and took 2 weeks to see it back again.

Do you have plans to create a raid? Then just change to ahci. You can upgrade the firmware to the latest version by downloading the firmware from the Samsung website (without using Magician) but you need to switch to ahci mode in any way. Only uses the raid mode if you are going to create a raid volume of 2 discs.

So I followed the guide and upon re-boot, I got the blue repair your computer screen. I restarted two or three times but windows would not update to the ahci drivers. finally did a reset and reinstall keeping my files and it worked. Only glitch the intel rapid storage not detecting my 960 Evo now and it shows and empty slot where the drive is!

might be worth checking out this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...gtx1080-in-game-random-stutter-freeze.804499/
If the technician disassembled your laptop, he might have warped the heatsink assembly causing some of the thermal pads to loose contact with the power delivery components.

I totally agree. dont get me wrong, i stand by my claim that dell/alienware after sales service is second to none, but you still need to deal with their tech support diagnostic monkey team and i would personally never trust the on site technician to disassemble such high end laptop.

Which is why after relying on Dell support for 4 months involving various exchanges/on-site support/depot repairs, I have sent my laptop to @Mobius 1 to get it in stable overclockable condition.

The 40pin UHD eDP cable for 17R4 is 2PVJC

40pin UHD eDP cable for 15R3: 5XNDW ASSEMBLY, CABLE, EDP, UHD, AW15R3

Anyone know compatible ones? These are either unavailable everywhere or are extremely expensive.

It won't do anything with the 6700cpu. It may increase fan speed, that's it. 6700 will boost as per intel speeds I.e 3.5ghz for 1 core.

So new Nvidia Max Q, I wonder if that means Alienware r5 refresh or keep same design with lower thermals?

Personally, I'd rather keep the current size but with reduced thermals using nvidia max q.

Be interesting to see reviews of this max q thing, but looks like Volta will be the next increase in performance now if this is Nvidia announcement for summer.

Don't think I would be ordering a new Alienware r4 with a gtx1080 now given potential heat issues on some models, if this new nvidia gpu design is implemented.

    If Dell release a A17 r5 refresh I'd like:-

Removal of tripod heatsink, but keep mainly same size laptop
    Glossy panel 17.3 option.
If doable removal of the 2 exhaust fan vents at the back, r3 looked smarter.

Is there any way to overclock this processor then being 6700HQ ? And how will the overclock affect torbo boost, if I increase the base clock with 100mhz will the top turbo boost go to 3.6ghz from 3.5 ?

The 6700hq is locked, you can't overclock it unfortunately. max speed will be 3.5 on 1 core.

well. I still remember how NVidia literally yesterday proclaimed that there will never be a difference between "mobile" and full size "desktop" versions of the same chip. and now again - we have "better" power consumption, "better" thermal solutions. at the price of efficiency. why call it 1080 chip. name it 980+. or even 980++

So after running mine for about a week it's looking like I'll need to do a re-paste. Playing ME:Andromeda my GPU holds good temps at 65 degrees but CPU is jumping into the mid to upper 80s with only 40% CPU usage.

im not sure what you mean but this interests me.

there are differences but they are alot more minor than before when they had m versions. number of active cores in 1070 and such. and the manufacturer imposed differences like lower power limit. the cooling on the chips and the other chips they depend on and thermal throttling and such.

I am not sure which processor you have, (or which CPUs support it), but I have a 7820HK and undervolting by -100mv (configured to the AW second performance OC profile), with Intel's XTU, has me in no hurry to repaste. I may repaste sometime in the future, but I see no need at this time. I also have the laptop's rear edge propped up on a .75" square dowel.

The only issue with XTU is that the -100mv setting is not static, and must be set upon each reboot. There are already posts detailing how to get XTU to start at boot.

ulimately, it is up to you...

Bit of help required, my work colleague who's a newbie has just purchased a a17 kaby lake 7820hk gtx1070, I've advised him to run some tests and on intel extreme utility benchmark he's only getting score of around 760 marks. This seems very low to me as I have the skylake 6820hk and I get 1220 score on overclock level 1.
Anyone who has a kabylake mind running a test to see what cpu score you get on stock clocks for a 7820hk using intel extreme benchmark? Thanks!

All good everyone remember that all unvirtuous activity has inherent consequences. Along that line though selling me a 2k$ laptop that throttles in the mid to low 70s by design is pretty unvirtuous as well. Perhaps i will look for the higher road next time i need a solution though. Also them selling this broken laptop to anyone else would be unvirtuous.

So i mean if a law says you should do something bad do you do it? Where do we draw the line?

How much is an AW17 with the 7820HK, GTX 1070, 16 GB 2667 RAM, 4K screen, 256 GB NVMe SSD, 1 TB HDD, 10 months warranty worth on the second-hand market?

Thanks, I have the 7820HK as well. I did this last night before I even read it and it brought temps down in to the 70s when gaming. At -.135mv I was crashing instantly and both XTU's and OOCT's stress test proved stable at both -.125mv and -.120mv. However I was getting fairly frequent crashing with Firefox and Chrome once I opened a few tabs so I brought it all the way down to -.100. The difference in temp between -.100 and -.125 was small enough to be within a margin of error. It sucks the 17R4 BIOS is so restrictive, I hate software voltage tuning.

Hey guys, can anyone suggest a good brand of memory which will work with the 17r4. Currently, I have the single stick 8gbs and would like to go dual stick to 16gbs. Would appreciate any input. Just to let everyone know, the GTX1060 with the i7 7700 is running Doom and other games at 2k without any issues. After an hour or two of gaming, the laptop stays nice and warm, with no overheating issues what so ever! I do keep my game settings at very high one step below max.

the new QHD screen for the AW17 is much better than the 1080p 120hz screen on the MSI, the MSI screen has a really strong antiglare coating if you look close u can see some smearing.

So, I sent my first 17r4 7820HK/1080GTX back around a month ago because of the uneven core temps, 1 and 3 were routinely reaching 95-99c even when running Firestrike. Decided to order again and got my new one today. After some extensive testing @Bios overclock 3 none of my core temps get above 80c, core differential ~3-7c (GPU never above 60c) and that is without any re-paste. Don't know if I got lucky, or if Dell has finally fixed their paste issues. I'm pretty happy. Getting 19k Firestrike scores with the GPU overclocked 200/400.

    Couple of questions...

    1.) I'm running system BIOS 1.0.8, should I upgrade?
2.) Should I upgrade to the overclock video BIOS? Currently running the version that it shipped with.

Just repasted my 17R4 (7820hk+1070) with cryonaut and did the PCH mod. When I turned on the laptop though, no boot. The lights come on and the fans start briefly when I press the power button but there is no boot or error codes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Fixed. Be careful of putting pressure on the PCH if you put a heat sink on it. It caused my laptop to boot loop with no post.

make sure all the plugs are plugged in correctly. The big white motherboard plug was tricky due to the limited space between the motherboard and CPU fan. I actually bend one of the pin because i did not line them up correctly, but was lucky to be able to unbend it later

Another update on my 17 R4 w/ 7820HK and GTX1080. The replacement was working well enough, but ME:A was still giving me the stutter/high temps even with undervolting. So I decided to get the heatsink/fans replaced and repasted with Conductonaut. It shaved a few degrees off and so the stuttering is now gone. Still not as low as I would like, but ME:A really seems to push this thing as hard as it can go.

Unfortunately the damn tech didn't plug in the daughtercard, so my left USB port was dead and the speaker/sub would blast static or thumping noises randomly and my sound wouldn't work right. Second tech managed to get it sorted out at least.

Firestrike score of 17.3k with 42x CPU. Max CPU Temp was 77 and GPU was 64C so that seems completely acceptable.
