I don't think you should use aluminum with liquid metal, but i'm no expert on the topic.

Yes, for PCH heatsink you need to use usual thermal paste without gallium. Kryonaut will be good one.

Why do you need a new heat sink?

My 17R4 is the 7700HQ / GTX 1060 (got a great deal). Found a 6820HK/GTX 1080 motherboard for super cheap. Swapped it in. Currently its running off of the 85W heatsink meant for the GTX 1060. That is why i need a new heat sink.

Out of curiosity, is that heatsink different from the 1070 one? And if so is it cross compatable?

    Hello
So, i've been trying to figure out if i have to call Alienware support about the differences in CPU core temps. I've read an old post by @iunlock that you have to set your multipliers in bios to be the same before you do OCCT testing in order to compare temp differences across cpu cores. So i did this in bios (Please tell me if i did it right, my aim is NOT to overclock, just to make sure i have consistent cpu core temps for cpu longevity).

Then i ran OCCT, and it automatically stopped after 10 min bec core#2 reached 96 temp. I'll share some of the graphs generated by OCCT and a HWiNFO screen shot. (Note the high temp fluctuations in core#2) Please advise.

When I run a benchmark on XTU it says "Yes" in "Current Limit Throttling". Not all the time, say "Yes" 3 or 4 times during the benchmark process. Why is this happening? What should I modify? PL1,2 ir undervolt?

If you're temps are jumping to the 90C's then it's the thermal paste and heat sink.
I know this may sound strange, but that current limit throttling is normal as it shows that on all the systems.

Increase PL1 and 2. Same also for iccMax value. Increased Power limits ain't dangerous.

Hi @iunlock And is it normal that during the XTU benchmark the Max Core Frequency oscillates? For example 4.28, 4.27, 4.25 ...?

Yes, try it. I raised PLl1/2 from 200,000 to 230,000, 300,000 and 350,000, but I did not change. If I leave at 0 Core Voltage Offset it does not anymore.

Since you have XTU values memorized, stop XTU service and set it to Manual. Use TS instead. Sometimes XTU behaves oddly, the same stable values cause issues while TS doesn't complain about anything.

Should i be worried? The replacement notebook was supposed to arrive today and be shipped out a couple days ago, but it's still on "label created". Concerned it might have been stolen in transit with how they don't use generic boxes.

Had the same issue, when they say label created that means Dell is "processing" the order; yours hasn't shipped yet but if you're feeling feisty call and ***** and they'll give you cash to not return it.

I just got the Alienware 17 R4 w/GTX 1080 and I noticed that GPU-Z only shows it running on x8 lanes instead of the x16. Is this normal when using the M.2 SSD Samsung 960 Pro as the only drive?

This is the same for my 1070. I believe that these laptops and maybe many other laptops use 8 lanes for their dedicated gpu. I believe that the amplifier does the same.

So i called Alienware support today, they agreed to come and fix the bezel where the tape is coming off. But they would NOT agree to repaste and/or change the heat sink. The tech i called took over the computer and ran the Intel Extreme Utility Stress test and the cpu max temp did not rise to 90 so after consulting with the "engineers" they declined to fix that. I spent 90 min explaining to them that a 15 to 20 C difference between cores is NOT normal even if the max temp doesn't go to the 90s, to no avail. (This was on stock cpu settings).

Now according to Dell's own recommendations you should go to bios, overclock to level 3 OC and test. If average temps go over 93, or if CPU doens't hold 3.7 GHz speeds, then there's a problem. So i did just that, and my Core#2 max temps went up to 93, but the AVERAGE temps stayed down in the 70s.

Then i ran prime95 on "small FFTs" for about 10 min. My core 0 & 2 temps peaked at 94 and 98 respectively, and averaged at 86 & 90. Should i call tech support again and show them this? Should i be concerned more with the max temps or the average temps? I'm still within the return period for my laptop. not sure what to do :(

Try this trick ... it worked in the past for me. This error occurs when you run the diagnostics In OC mode...

    Go yo the BIOS setup
[Select OC Level 1 -> Then select Custom and enter the following values.]
Set all Core Ratio Limit Override to 44 (41 if you have CPU 6820hk)
    Core Extra Turbo Voltage: 100
    Power Limit 1: 230.000
    Power Limit 2: 230.000

Save changes and restart. Now you must start in diagnostic mode. Press F12 when you start and Select Diagnostics. Runs the full diagnostic. It will surely give you an error. Calls the Dell support and reports the error with the validation code (see capture). With this error they must change the complete heatsink (with the 2 fans) because the CPU Fan is soldered to the heatsink and request the repaste too.

Do you use f10 to save after selecting OC level 1 and before selecting custom?

No, F10 after select custom and change all values... then, when you restart, press F12 and Select Diagnostics from the menu...

You also have the option to save the error information in a usb disk to send it to the support, but with the error validation number is enough for them. Tell me if you gave this error.

    Good Luck!

Im running the R4 with 7820hk and the 1080, here is a pic of the information on back of PSU. (see attached)

I think I am going to hold off on modding the PCH since after a 4 hour sessions of Watch Dogs 2 on ultra, the PCH temp didn't get over 65C. Also, I am realizing that the large temp differential I was experiencing between core 3 and other cores is only present when running emulation programs. So im wondering if its a software issue. I have not updated the BIOS since receiving the lappy in June. Do any of the new BIOS updates include fixes to core temp differentials?

If you ordered the 1080p then all new models Kaby lake ship with AUO (early skylake use to ship with LGPHILLIPS).

Or if you ordered qhd then they are all AUO panels.

    I'm assuming you haven't ordered a 4k panel and received a 1080p panel?

The 4k panels are AUO OR Sharp (AUO is the slightly better of the 2 panels, but they are both fab panels for colours).
