Update:
Repasted my personal unit. Finally.
In addition to my repaste etc...After 7.5 Hours (total) of messing around with the heat sink assembly with a ton of testing, balancing, trial and error to get it just right, here are the results.

More tests to come...OCCT etc...

I'm running both at 1080p
At 1440p on AW i get about 45-66 FPS
Fire strike scores are 16300 for Alienware and 17800 for msi
I get 99fps on 1440p with over watch on epic

Yup.
At max CPU load, the fans are going to come on anyway. When I'm collecting data to figure out percentages etc...to keep the consistency I keep the fans on.

What's it like then them on normal ?

Just as good LOL as in good temps... What would you like to see? What test? Game? I'd be happy to provide it.
What laptop do you own? -
Do you have overWatch ? What fps do you get I get only 90-100 with 1440p epic

Please, compare Firestrike graphics score. Only Stock clock speed on graphics. Apple vs Apples
Only way to see if Mr. Azor has gimped the power draw on 1080.
He claimed their 1080 isn't a down scaled Nvidia cards like those from other OEM's. This means AW's 1080 cards should perform better than other OEM's cards. -
I'll run firestrike on both in just a min both at stock

I'll download it. This is only the 4th time turning on the laptop since I've received it over a week ago and only the first time after the repaste just tonight haha...crazy I know...just been so busy.
I have KF2 and GTA installed at the moment. Don't worry I'll be posting a ton soon...in the mean time enjoy all the other goodies already posted by myself and other fellow members.hmscott likes this. -
Wow iunlock ur numbers are great man. I did a re-paste with conductonaut and did the arm trick and my temps went down tremendously and my core differentials are no more than 2 degrees c (sometimes less).
However, I'm still seeing like 72-74c on all cores @40x with ambient room temps @21.5c after an hour of occt. I'm undervolting -0.06v. Can't go any further or it gets very unstable in real world tasks and gaming :-(
Do you think those number are ok or can I do better? And those temps are with my laptop propped up about an inch in the back to improve ventilation.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Thanks mate. By any chance did you change out your stock thermal pads?
The temps you are getting is pretty good, heckava lot better than stock.
It is a good idea to prop up the rear a little for more ventilation.

Sorry if you've already addressed this somewhere else, but are you doing your tests with the laptop rear propped? @iunlockLast edited: Dec 21, 2016

Thanks man! Yes I used fujipoly 17w/mk. I must not be very skilled lol. And you're definitely right it's way better than stock. I was getting like 95-100c @40x on BIOS 1.0.2 running occt in less than 3min lol. But I am happy that it's way better than stock. About 20-30c better haha.
To be honest this was my first time doing anything like this. I've had plenty of experience with electronics and manufacturing but never this.

Warming up....
Best Graphics Score was on another run of 23070...so far
-
Very nice. Anything better than stock eh? Keep them cores cool!
Cheers. -
Thanks mate!

As expected. Lower graphics score with stock graphics from Alienware. I need to see the max power draw from graphics on both machines!! This can tell a lot. Of course with stock clock. Use either Hwinfo or Hwmonitor.hmscott likes this.

AW supposed to draw full 150W for the graphics card, while the rest of them out there do only 120W

I have cpuid HWmonitor where do I see the power

Msi gt73vr checking power now I'll send. New photo in a few
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
It's suppose to be 180W, not 150W.
150W would mean crippled.hmscott likes this. -
What are the rest of them supposed to pull
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
You can see it in the previous Hwmonitor window under graphics(MSI). Maybe you can't see it for AW. Switch over to Hwinfo if you can't see the power consumption in Hwmonitor
Marketing ****y from Mr. Azor
Only Razer and AW perform under pari with stock 1080Last edited: Dec 21, 2016hmscott likes this. -
That's a pretty broad question. The GTX 1080 should be no less than 180W. If it is then unfortunately, the GTX 1080 in whatever unit that it's in is crippled.
A crippled 1080 is no better than a nicely OC'ed 1070.hmscott likes this. -
Is this right 203w? For what ever reason the AW does now show me core voltage only the msi does

What do you mean ?? That's from msi gt73vr
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
Look at first picture from Msi score. Maybe I have missed but I think I saw +215W. I'm on my little phone
Probably wrong reading from processor
Regardless. Hwinfo is a much better tool.hmscott likes this. -
Is that a 1070.?

I received my AW 17R4 yesterday. I was so excited and couldn't wait to open it. My wife knows that my focus would be on the new toy and let me at it
. It's a 6820 1070 machine. Opened it up and did the once over for fit and finish and it all seemed fine. Turned it on and expected to go thru the setup. To my shock I get the ‘Windows wasn’t shutdown correctly’ screen and then it boots into the Picture screen with the time. I'm dumb founded and press the space bar to notice the last user was 'Object user' with the windows login prompt. I look at my wife with this dazed, confused and disappointed face; and considered just putting it back in the box and sending it back. The “no surrender’ part of me takes over (This always gets me into a lot of trouble BTW)
I couldn’t login so my next step was to try a reinitialize of windows by holding the shift key. I boot in the appropriate troubleshoot menu to notice it missing the all-important reset. Ok now I’m getting miffed and call Tech support. After an hour of running diagnostics and discussion of the issue (Including a non post issue where we had to pull ram and battery) Dell is dumbfounded and now they are concerned about the machine being tampered with and maybe a virus. I’m like how would this happen as it was just delivered earlier today from you.
Now the suggestion from Dell is to send me a thumb drive with a bootable image so we can reinstall windows and start from scratch. Now the kicker is it going to take them 3 to 4 days to get this to me. This little voice is still telling me why am I even considering doing this on a $2500.00 machine, and why is Dell/Alienware such a cluster on a high end laptop that they can’t even install windows correctly. Then my ‘no surrender’ attitude rears its ugly head again and beats that down (imagine the angel and devil on shoulder scenario). I walk over to my 18x and start to d/l the Windows 10 image. So there I am d/l, creating a bootable thumb drive and then installing Windows till 1:30 am SMH.
I’m not even sure if I’m keeping this as the light bleed is bad. This morning I started to d/l all the drivers and apps from the support site so I can finish the build. Maybe if I’m lucky I can do some testing tonight.

Sounds like my 1080 might be a little crippled then .. max power is 170 compared to 203 with msi gt73vr .. I could be wrong .. is there away to increase power to AW17

I just boxed it up for a refund .. with the fan noise and temps .. and lower firestrike score I'm gonna send it back .. I will say the build quality it amazing but the msi is more performance for the money with even stock thermal paste

Can somebody confirm that the LCD panel can be changed with the one MSI is using in their GT73VR? I'm talking of the:
Chi Mei N173HHE-G32 (CMN1747) = 1080p 120Hz/5ms Matt TN Panel
And if some Alienware rep. is reading...include this panel option in their line PLEASE! -
Shouldn't be so much lower than MSI's model with same clock speed!! Remember what Mr. Azor said about other OEM' so called crippled 1080 graphics cards
This is like hitting them self in the head with a BIG hammer!! Big claims must be showed with real numbers.
@hmscott Maybe you have seen it? I mean what Azor said.
-
Anyway to boot up my unit faster? Everytime I boot up, I always get checking media message all the time.
-
I saw in the Alienware 15 R3 post that Dell recognized the problem and they were safe to purchase now... is that the same case with the 17? Want to purchase one tomorrow but not if I likely have to repaste it and such. Thanks!
-
That comment was essentially why I chose to get my 17... If I get a dud there will be no remorse in sending it back.Papusan likes this.
