After replacement , My new 9900k 2080 area 51m seems to work fine for the past one week.
However, I noticed the GPU was running much hotter than the dead one under 95+% load. playing Anthem with all max setting will push the gpu to the 87c wall even at performance thermal profile. the frequency stays at 1785 MHz. Is it normal,? what is you guys case?Attached Files:

Hey guys, I can see by reading these super technical posts that Im in a little over my head here but I m just looking for some advice. Considering buying an Area 51 RTX 1070. Would there be any limitations as far as VR or would it be lacking at all in performance? Also not clear what hard drive is best for gaming or just in general. Is a RAID drive preferable?

jclausis, thanks for the link! If I was in the market now for a laptop with a rtx 2080 would you have a model be it alienware or other to suggest? I've done some research but with 2 kids and a full time job I don't have tons of time and the 51m seems to be at the top of the heap right now.Vasudev likes this.

Not especially... I would suggest waiting about 4-5 months until things are sorted out with this model. There are other laptops out there from Sager (or other boutique versions of Clevo), HP, MSI, and even Wal-Mart. Some of them will be based on BGA technology (a type of tech where the CPU and/or GPU are soldered and cannot be swapped). If possible I recommend trying to stay away from those models.
There are many sub-forums here at NBR, using the company web sites, kind of get an idea of what models you're interested in, and then take a look at ALL forum topics regarding that model. Hopefully you'll find something that suits your needs and doesn't put you in the position of having to send it back for a new motherboard, GPU, yellowed-out case, etc. within a few months. -

I noticed on the US AW page if you choose 2080 it jumps to June 25th delivery date. 2070/2060 its May 25th. So I would say they are simply out of inventory right now. This happens a lot on their webpage..VoodooChild likes this. -

Update: my LG panel looked a little creamier than my other unit and dell tech was awesome. They overnighted the part to the Depot. He brought the new panel assembly and let me have it rather than swap himself. Since dell is letting me keep both panels, I’m wondering if I should just swap the panel later and save the new one lol

Remember you can use a foam dam inside the IHS to stop anything from leaking out, too Also helps protect against oxidation, and still leaves the small gap at the edge of the IHS for expansion/contraction (there have been some people who had issues if the gap itself were totally sealed).

Mine just died. Was playing Anthem for the first time, max settings, no overclocking on the laptop (9900/2080/32GB/2TB RAID 0 SSD + 1TB Hybrid). Got through the introductory part of the game and had my first conversation in town, was walking to the second and then flipping through the game menus looking for a game-save type of thing, when the screen went black and a puff of smoke came out of the back of the laptop.
Disappointed but not surprised--will get ahold of Dell CS now. I might just return for a refund rather than risk this again. Anyone have any good suggestions for a comparable alternative high-end laptop? -

Sorry to hear this, hope its a straight forward process getting it sorted or a refund.
When did you order/receive yours, if you don't mind me asking.
Again, hope you get a speedy resolution, keep us posted. -

There are only 3 alternatives that are 17" LGA socketed + removable GPU.
On my phone I cannot remember model numbers off hand.
1) the smaller clevo 775 something or rather
2) larger clevo 870 something
3) MSI baller WT something with workstation GPU (Eurocom Tornado F7)raz8020, Vasudev, Aroc and 1 other person like this. -

I currently have the LG, and the new one is still in the box so I’m hoping when I open it in about an hour that it will show the panel model on it

It will say it on the invoice looking thingy that is blue and white.
Otherwise since its in the lid and its the entire assembly you probably wont be able to find out without installing it.
I would be super interested to know what panels the depot carries. -
That's odd. I ordered mine on the 29th as well and I did not get it until today.
Where did you order it from? Dell Directly? -
I'm on with CS chat now. They're offering to replace it. Still, kind of a huge pain; I just got finished swapping out the Wi-Fi card (replaced the Wi-Fi 5 it came with with the Wi-Fi 6 version) and loading over 1TB of software on, setting up my work VPN, a new printer (which was itself a huge pain). Not excited about doing all of that again (especially with the possibility that it'll burn out again).

Mine crapped out 2 days ago, I was running a game and paused it for a couple minutes came back and the screen was black. Shut it off and it never turned back on. Definitely not happy right now I spent 4500 on it and only 35 days old, 2080-i9-32gb ram.
Dell already got it at the repair center but has informed me the part needed is not in stock. I did really enjoy it while it worked really great machine but I’m nervous it’s going to constantly have issues. -
And what bios version was on it? Also what vBios version?
Two in a row.

I have never experienced anything like this so far. Seems to be something is wrong here.
They'll eventually come to collect one. They don't usually give a duplicate part for free.Last edited by a moderator: May 15, 2019 -
just installed the evo plus 2tb. Also have 2tb evo so thought I would run a quick benchmark in case some of you are thinking about getting the evo plus?

Can you link me to where you bought the 970 EVO Plus 2TB? The max size for the Plus is 1TB -
That I don’t know. I didn’t do any updates, so it had the version that came from the factory (unless it auto-installed an update without me knowing). I did do the NVIDIA driver updates, for what it’s worth.
CS is going to do a replacement, but they said it will take 1-2 weeks. They said my 30-day return clock will continue to run during that time, but if it has the same problem, they’ll cover a refund under the warranty (I’ll need to contact their cancellation team for that).
I’d really just like the laptop to work—the top-end desktop parts are awesome . . . but if the concept is more advanced than the tech can actually handle, what’s the point? -

They will guarantee you 30 days money back afterwards? This if the same happens again... What about the rest? What if there is something else you are not happy with on the replacement?
I don't like this type or similar deals. I would RMA for refund and start all over again.
Everything smells more like hasty R&D. They should have tested it more properly before they throw it out to the masses.
See... Alienwares Ceo Azor said by himself its difficult develope a laptop with desktop parts

Try one of those mini ITX systems?
From what I have read so far, I am still at page 892 (25 April), Dell have admitted of fitting an incorrect VRM, which burns out at higher voltages, literally burns, and I assume this destruction/shorts/bridges may send bad electricity down the lanes zapping SSDs and RAMs etc -
Does anyone know if the GTX 2070 version also has issues?
I am about to buy that one with the amplifier
Another question:
Is it complicated to repaste this? I have build many desktops before and repasted 1 laptop
I can get a free 9900K in a month so thinking of buying this with 9700 and 2070 to stay "safe" from errors and use the external gpu more for heavy work -

The 2070 has had very few issues compared to the 2080. I recall 3 2070s dying, one of those was mine. -
I also wonder if I should not stay on a 2070 rather than the 2080.
it is not for a purchase but a replacement machine for a 17R3 (i7 / 980M). And considering the 2080 option is not available anymore on the dell website...
I just hope i wont regreat with a lower spec graphic card. -

Does anyone happen to know of a program like Notepad that has transparency/overlay, so it will stay on top of whatever I'm doing and not stick out too much?

After all these burn out issues I am really starting to worry about my purchase
I just hope that guys from HID did they job well in terms of thermal compound upgrade and cpu delidding.
-

I don’t think thermal compound and pads are the issue. Machines that are running very cool are dying.
Told you that AUO panel is nice compared to the Lg.

Yes, I understand that undervolt could improve the thermal. But what i'm concerned about is whether this temps at stock normal?
-
Hey HG what kind of Firestrike GPU score are you getting out of the 51M? I know you pushed the GT75 to nearly 30K and was wondering if you surpassed that easily.
If you find a program that does that please let me know. -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
The best I did was 30,300 with very impractical, barely stable clocks. With normal clocks I’m around 28 to 29K. Highest CPU score was around 27K, which was the big step up from the GT75

Yes, it is exactly like a lottery at the moment. A $4000 Russian roulette with owner's having no clue when the next restart might be their last. LOL
What I find odd is that no media outlet seems to be reporting this issue other than the owner's themselves and AW/Dell and Azor have been as tight-lipped as a baby's backside. Its about time someone called them out on social media and other channels but it seems people are ok with their $4000 investment just dying out without knowing why it happened in the first place. Damn!

I don't recall someone successfully doing this, not sure if there is an adapter to accomplish it, I recall hearing questions about it, but haven't seen anyone do it successfully - I wouldn't try as I don't think the sockets are the same keying so it wouldn't provide what you need.
I did a quick search and found this as an answer to essentially the same question:
https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/772848-replace-wifi-card-with-ssd/
Posted April 28, 2017
If the Wi-Fi adapter is using M.2, then it's likely not keyed for SSD use (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_factors_and_keying, it likely has an E key, which is not compatible with any M.2 SSD).
If it uses mini-PCIe, then your only option is probably https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...m_re=mini_pcie_ssd-_-9SIA9Y13N49614-_-Product since most mini-PCIe Wi-Fi cards are of that size and SSDs of that size are incredibly rare."

Please post back here and let us know if you find out definitively if the Area 51m Wifi socket does or does not support an M.2 storage connection.Last edited: May 15, 2019Fire Tiger, Pudge, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Thank you for research and detailed answer, but my idea was just to use m.2 extender with native m.2 slot (which is right below wifi) and put 1120 ssd over wifi card.Fire Tiger and hmscott like this.

So I was looking back at the Thermal pads everyone was going to use. So basically for this laptop I will be getting some fujipoly Ultra Extreme's. A set of ( .5mm, 1mm). Does that sound about right? Also my laptop was delayed just now till the 29th. Because of two items 2080 and the motherboard. So I am guessing that I may just get all revised parts.
