What Chinese benchmark? I mean people have been battling these reprehensible out of the box temps for years. This is nothing new, and certainly not an Expected and Unavoidable Feature of Gaming Notebooks. Still ROTFLing actually haha.jc_denton likes this.

The saddest part is that they're so gone already, undervolting their machines ain't gonna do jack isht. They need to innovate like Alienware used to do ! But hey the customer is king ! (And stupid).
Ugh they never gonna learn that innovation will cost some $$$$ but that's something they don't want to hear. Let alone speak about it lol ( D(#)ell only uses the word innovation for marketing ). We'll see how it'll go with the R2. Having a feeling that this model will be short-lived (like the R4 that went from the 6th gen to the 7th gen and was quickly replaced by the R5 with the 8th gen) -

I have been using 2x330watt PSu's with my 51m's since that day I got them. One of them still gets much hotter than the other. It seem's to be the one plugged in closest to the center of the laptop nearest the AGA port. I have a Eurocom 780watt psu and of course it runs cool as a cucumber.Vanya, Fire Tiger and normand668 like this. -

Good choice.
Although the 51m did not completely deliver on the said promises, it's still a solid machine with solid performance (thermals are a different story) it is very steep step upwards from the older BGA filth models, but they're not their yet.
The R2 should have been an evolution, not de-evolution. They went the wrong direction and it seems that Azor still had "some" decision making going on. Still nothing from his replacement, and it's been more than a half year already. God knows what they're planning.
To me it looks like Dell is slowly consolidating AW to the G series bringing over more tech year by year and to slowly blow out the AW candle and use their IP inside of Dell while not having AW as a separate brand anymore.
That'll keep the costs down which equals to more $$$$
Edit: @Papusan Please save this comment, just in case Dell announces the death of AW.
With them you never know, they did it with EMC already..Fire Tiger, ssj92, jc_denton and 1 other person like this. -
Doesn't help much... Maybe some. But new changes in firmware and software will come later/afterwards.
Yees. Everything is better than BGA. Can't compete. Everything before Area was more as a Tripod and 100C tragedy. I hoped they wouldn't add in Area in the 100C novelle. But sure they did. This just show they don't listen on the enthusiasts fan-base.
If you have seen the Vapor Chamber for R5 you can easly see it.

I can lend you the tool to do it yourself with the copper ihs .
On my desktop with a watercooling custom the i9 10900k was hitting 100 degrees constantly with an undervolt of 80 max anymore and it would crash .
Now I'm hitting max 70 degrees with cinebenchr20 and idle is 25 compared to 40.
I don't know if HID also has the copper option because for me just deliding with LM didn't change a lot it was really the copper ihsVasudev, Fire Tiger and etern4l like this. -

How can I have them and the laptop still didn't even start production? If you mean what I said about the post made by Papusan, this is what made me change my mind about de-lidding: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...r2-owners-lounge.832848/page-50#post-11030802etern4l likes this. -
I think he meant HID's numbers from their testing. Not from your coming Dell-book
As you say it looks like they already have the numbers.

You think HID sent him detailed evidence of improvement due to delidding? That would be a very special laptop sales experience indeed!
-
Melvin Rousseau Notebook Consultant
Yeah sure why not
-
Well, a couple of reasons:
1. Variability - even if they managed to achieve particular thermals on one occasion, there is no guarantee they would be able to reproduce the result in another laptop - plus then they would actually kind of have to try and achieve the advertised termals
Potentially way more testing at the very least.
2. Reputational and possibly legal exposure as per above
3. No sign of such detailed info on their website, so unlikely to be their policy to share such information
4. Probably nobody else would do this - no competitive pressure
In summary, not much upside for them to share this. They can just offer a vague recommendation, and will bag the $5k sale all the same

This works just fine on the R1, I don't see the R2 being any different. I use regularly 1 x 330w and 1 x 240w at home and the 180w at work. I have used 2 x 330w but they are too bulky to carry 2 around.Last edited: Jul 9, 2020normand668, Rei Fukai, ratchetnclank and 1 other person like this.

Cool it! We talk laptop thermals with an expert from Dell
In part 2, North talks about one of the most controversial concerns about laptops: running the CPU up to 100 degrees Celsius. While many on the Internet believe this to be a design flaw, North explains why hitting 100 degrees and getting as close to the maximum thermal limit of the CPU is actually good. @Mr. Fox @jc_denton +++
Yeah, why should Dell's engineers follow Intel's own oc'ing engineers from the Intel lab....
https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/features/inside-intels-secret-overclocking-lab/7
"At home, the lab engineers consider a load temperature above 80C to be a red alert, meaning that's the no-fly zone, but temps that remain steady in the mid-70’s are considered safe. The team also strongly recommends using adaptive voltage targets for overclocking and leaving C-States enabled. Not to mention using AVX offsets to keep temperatures in check during AVX-heavy workloads"Last edited: Jul 9, 2020raz8020, Fire Tiger, etern4l and 3 others like this. -

I get what he's trying to say, obviously maximizing performance on boost. However if it throttles at 100'c then you never want it to hit that temp surely a max temp of 85 would make sense?
Additionally he compared it to car, but you wouldn't redline your engine all the time because it increases wear and this is the same thing.Vasudev, raz8020, DreDre and 1 other person like this. -
Dell offer overclocking. No point in that if the hardware run 100C before you click on that oc' button. Dell tune for 100C. Have been like this since 2012. Period!Last edited: Jul 9, 2020Vasudev, raz8020, ratchetnclank and 2 others like this.

Most Xeons have a 85c temp limit, likely for stability purposes, since they need to remain operational for a long time under load. I would only accept +95c in a torture/stress test or when benching for absolute records. If you render a lot, I would tune the frequency accordingly to stay within the thermal budget, but keep frequency and PL2 as high as possible without fluctuation for best performance.
Running system at 100c is just inefficient, both in terms of longevity and power. But this is what thin and light gets you, and they can use the "we are the best in density" excuse all they want, anemic cooling is still anemic.Vasudev, Spartan@HIDevolution, raz8020 and 4 others like this. -

Of course.. It’s Pcworld. Still nice getting confirmed that Dell’s main thermal engineers defending their 100C goal
With this posts I hope all others now should stop put all overheating blame on Intel.

Ah, I was wrong, it gets better:
Gordon: All those years I've been wondering why on Earth does Dell continue to use toothpaste as thermal compound...
North: Haha, good one Gordon. TBH you're not far off, and the truth is: we save just about 20c per unit that way. It doesn't make sense.
Gordon: I see, well I'm sure Dell can do better than that..
North: I'm sorry, I can't really talk about that.
Gordon: OK, now, all the new thinner Alienware laptops have been suffering from severe thermal issues. Do you think Dell took things too far in an attempt to emulate Apple?
North: I agree, we have failed our customers who came to expect top performance and excellent thermal design. The pursuit of arbitrary weight targets meant we had to shrink essential components such as heatsinks, heat pipes and fans. As a consequence we suffered unprecedented volume of returns and service calls. Due to internal politics, nothing has been done so far to reverse this disastrous strategy.
Gordon: Fascinating. Well, thank you very much for being so forthcoming. This is quite unexpected, I hope our viewers have found find this informative. After all, it's all in their hands - if they continue purchasing inferior products, nothing will change. We will leave it at that. Until next time!

To be fair to this engineer i think he does know what he's talking about but he's hamstrung to try and put a positive spin on things by those who make the decisions higher up. He may well want better thermals in the products but is constrained by the product designers who mandate the thinner chassis.
Those quotes above that @etern4l highlighted seem to suggest this too. -
Exactly, the thermal engineer has to make the best of whatever the internal Dell politics dictate. I'm just glad to see critical thinking from people that can see through the marketing smokescreen.

Yes indeed and we also share same processor vulnerabilties in AMT/MEI, processor uCode and still Intel tells us, their 14nm god knows whenever their plus(es) end on finely optimized process node is free from exploits!etern4l, Rei Fukai, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

It’s more than thin product design. They try to design the cooling in the cheapest possible way. Not for best cooling. And the thermal engineers cooperate hand in hand with the firmware crippplers. If temp go above target just add in the 4 mentioned sensors and firmware to handle the rest. Cooling is more than hardware as you know.raz8020, jclausius, ratchetnclank and 4 others like this.
