"Ultrathin gaming" probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think "Alienware". Dell is looking to change all that this year by launching the thinnest gaming laptop the company has ever made.
Thin chassis designs will always entail compromises. In this case, the GPU in the Alienware x15 will run at a lower TGP than last year's Alienware m15 R4 (110 W vs. 140 W). Yeah, design before/over functionality!
But notebookcheck forgot that the lightly thicker x17 also offer no side ports.

The ultrathin 17.3-inch Alienware x17 integrates vapor chamber cooling, Dell's in-house liquid metal formula, and four individual fans for a starting price of $2099 USD when it launches on June 15. The system ushers in a new era of Alienware where thin and light may soon take priority over the traditionally thick and bulky Alienware designs.

OK, so X actually means eXtra thin, no RAM slots in the x15, no HDMI port, no AGA based on absolutely idiotic reasons. Race to the abysmal thin and light bottom continues. FUA.

I was initially wondering why they announced and launched the m15 R6 since it would be redundant to the x15, but since the two laptops are so different (and who knows, maybe the m15 R6 with more power-capable GPUs could be more powerful), I can now understand why the m15 R6 exists.

More ports mean more fun: Let the lightning-fast games begin with two Type-C ports for up to 40Gbps data transfer connections. These ports can also serve as an additional display output for external monitors. Plus, with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A with PowerShare up to 10Gbps connection speeds you’ll have all the quality connection options you could ever need.
More ports? Do the enginereers of the model and the sales team work for same company?
The price point. Double up with the cheaper SKUs help boost sales.Last edited: Jun 1, 2021raz8020, Lakshya, etern4l and 1 other person like this. -

Ready to swap over from Gigatop to Dell?
If you want the model with the lesser ports you must go for the x15. But not a huge difference vs the x17
-
so it needs and adapter to get 2 tb ports? because i only saw 1 on the back. does this adapter come with it or a separate purchase? if its separate they are askoles. Today they only have the maxed out x17 which is a whopping 4k price (after taxes and shipping). Memory is NOT SOLDERED as per dell tech and upgradeable to 64gb tops though i think it can 128gb @3200mhz not 3466 64gb as listed. They also downgraded the 3080 to 8gb from 16gb which to me make ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!!! since they are making the x17 a 4k 120hz display only (For Now) which will already cripple the system and gaming at this configuration even they offered it at 200w its not enough. also the 2tb nvme offered with the system is extremely over valued at 420 bucks! (this is with a dell membership account that gets 2% off regular price) which is obscene and absolutely egregious. overall its just bad bad bad...... -

Dell site show the 3080 at 8gb, but the spec sheet shows the 3080 at 16gb, that's quite the discrepancy . . .
-
Depends. But it seems they will send with a cheap Usb-C to ethernet dongle. Not sure if it will have a AW sticker or Dell branding.
Alread posted the specs. They offer 3080 with both 8GB and 16GB vram. Only 8GB for the x15

I wonder why Dell has the x17 with full specs but the 3080 is only 8GB.
Either way that’s a hell of a price tag and with a basic 1 year warranty. -
I'd like to get ahold of that gallium based thermal paste and put that in my own systems. The electrical conductivity of liquid metal has been a real turn off for me, but I'd like a paste with encapsulated liquid metal.
Since Alienware has introduced this as a new exotic thermal paste, I hope other companies will produce something similar. -

I find it amusing that you only get a trackpad with lighting if you spend 1k on a graphics upgrade. -
they charge for 1 year warranty when they supposed to offer FREE 1 year on parts and service in the US but they charge you 110 bucks if you take monthly or 1 time payment. i fight that and get my money back normally. price tag is disgusting. its over valued by almost 800 bucks. 2 tb nvme is priced at 420 when a 2tb pci 3.1 with 3500read and 3200 write is priced at 193. thats a 227 dollar saving right there. minus the 110 for warranty they arent supposed to charge that 337 the cherry mx keyboard is a 120 dollar upcharge my opinion it aint worth it just get the per key thats another 90 dollar saving we at 427. 50 dollar charge for " intergraded battery" ummmmmm hello thats part of the system why are you charging us for a battery that should be included in base of laptop...minus that 50 bucks i usually fight this out with a rep. and win 477.50 they are not offering any discounts currently.......yeaaaa talk to a rep you can normally score 200-400 discount. i once scored a 1000 with a purchase of 2 desktop systems with 3090 in them. i purchased them just for 3090 to mine and resold the system. paid 3.7k for 2 3090 system tax and shipping included with 11400f 8gb ram 2tb 7200rpm system 1000w psu. which in my opinion that was worth it if you can resell the system only. Sold both systems at 700 each. so 2300 for 2 3090s. i did install rx 580 8gb in them i purchased on ebay for 100 usd before the whole graphic boom. so it really dependant on how good you talk to them.etern4l likes this. -

How come the spec sheet for the x17 says UHD but the resolution is a QHD res?

They are drunk
They write whatever they find
But from what I know... There is no QHD displays for the x17. Several is angry because of Dell's choice of panels. Maybe yooo remember Azor promised new/more choices of panels for the Area-51m ? Messed up as you remember.

Its a typo on the page. The 3080 has 16gb of vram. They will be updating the page soon to correct the error. -

I'm honestly sad to see the A51m disappear. The R2 chassis was very capable with cooling, and it would have been nice to see an A51m R3 w/ Ryzen 5900X and 200W RTX 3080 Laptop.

They should, but those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The fact of the matter is they do not learn anything from their own successes and failures, so the chance that they would learn anything from a competitor that isn't crApple (whom they aspire to be more like, unfortunately,) is near zero percent.
Well... it was uncommonly good for the brand, and they simply cannot allow that. This fits the thought above. For the first time in roughly 10 years, they finally released a product that might come close to qualifying as something other than a disposable malfunctioning turd. These nitwits outright cancel it rather than make it better. If this doesn't highlight what kind of losers they are in bold italic red font with a yellow background, nothing will. What is really stupefying is the fact that there are people who will continue buying their broken garbage because, like Dellienware, their customers also do not learn from their mistakes.raz8020, SlickDragon, Rei Fukai and 5 others like this. -
Eddy Ernie and Umar say they listening on their customers. Whom told them that they should castrate the 3080 Mobile from 140W down to 110W TGP in the x15? They even capped the TGP with +40% on the 3060. Not so sure all gamers is happy with near 30 up to 44% lower TGP due the need for a few mm thinner. And they did this for all Ampere mobile. And why not keep 3060 at 110W as the rest of the Ampere SKUs ? The chassis and the cooling should handle it. Oh'well... All get exactly what they asked for...

Edit.
See also the m15 R5 + R6 with 3060. Slightly thicker models.
You can clearly see why they also castrated the graphics in the R5 and R6. Not a pretty sight if the newer x series model perform lackluster compared to the old. Maybe they hope for the best?Last edited: Jun 1, 2021raz8020, SlickDragon, Spartan@HIDevolution and 7 others like this. -

I am curious who has ever seen and thread, forum, YouTube video asking AaW to make them thinner? Who and where do they come up with this crap? All I see is people wanting upgradeable and more powerful machine. Not castrated lachijes that run 100c all the time.

Probably an internal market analysis. If, by everywhere, you mean here, Reddit, Alienware Arena, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, then that's the only thing I can reasonably think of. I don't even think the data they were analyzing has to be just respondents of a survey; just looking at trends, what sells, what doesn't, etc from other companies.raz8020, etern4l, Clamibot and 1 other person like this.

I know, right? So stupid. The problem is they can't distinguish between Alienware enthusiasts from the past, whom they have betrayed, and ordinary consumers that are mostly ignorant, and go with cute or whatever clique they want to be part of tells them to believe.raz8020, SlickDragon, pathfindercod and 4 others like this.

Comparatively speaking it was better than their newer showings but ultimately it was an Alienware. It had its own plethora of problems like the VRM burnout issue, later bioses castrating the gpu to lower power limits, locking undervolting and so on.raz8020, Clamibot, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this.

Yeah that's what happens when you have an army of designers that are not PC enthusiasts and don't know what the hell they're doing. They build desktops and so-called DTRs like a chintzy disposable turdbook.raz8020, pathfindercod and etern4l like this.

Time have changed bro Fox. We both is too old for this. A nice looking rgb touch pad is enough for some to jump on the unknown. The more bling bling, the better. And they know it sells.
Who else got New Sexy Alienware X Series?
Edit... According to the manufacturer, the Alienware x15 is the world's most powerful notebook with a height of less than 1.6 centimeters, while the x17, with a thickness of 2.1 centimeters, is at least the thinnest Alienware notebook with a 17-inch display.
And this may help on the sales as well... The manufacturer emphasizes that the packaging consists of 75 percent recycled materials and 25 percent plastic from the ocean.

The same thought process applies to people that believe the words of a prostitute that says she loves them. She might look pretty on the outside, but her heart is as dark, cold and loveless as a chunk of coal. She loves their money, not her "customer", enough to sell her own soul. All she really offers in return for it is lies, emptiness, shame, embarrassment and disease.Last edited: Jun 1, 2021raz8020, SlickDragon, Tenoroon and 4 others like this.

The only thing that they do better than others now is their stock/production. It is very easy and predictable to buy from Dell, while you can spend weeks or months waiting for the Asus or MSI that you want to be available. I suppose that Dell has really good agreements with Intel and Nvidia and that's how they get the parts for the Alienware models. But yes, without AGA port and with this trend to follow Razer who are following Apple, I suppose that my next gaming laptop won't be coming from Dell.

The M14x is a great little machine...yes an MXM GPU would have been preferred but it was still fun to mess around with. The low powered CPU options for the 13 R1/R2 were very disappointing.
-
M14x were great machines with decent CPU options and great cooling, but maxed @ GT555m for the r1 and GT650m for the r2 which made all of its pros irrelevant. 13 r1-r2 maxed at a dual core ultrabook CPU and I dont need to say more. This x15 is just awful man, soldered RAM, heavily neutered GPUs, lack of ports, no vapor cooling, no OLED. x15 feels more like a performance laptop instead of a gaming one.
-
Yes, they have definitely lost their way even further (somehow it was possible). No numpad on a 17" laptop seems crazy to me. I'm a big numpad user but I guess many people don't care for it.
You have to take the old smaller form factor laptops for what they were. They were never meant to be the hardcore machines, just something more portable for games on the go. I never had an M14x back in the old days as I started with a maxed out M17x R3 and then grabbed the M11x R3 for a little extra fun before grabbing the M18x R2, which I still have. I've refurbished a few M14x's recently though and I'm really enjoying them. -
I am still on my Alienware m18x from 2011. I have waited for a replacement and nothing yet. The new one doesn't have to be as thick or with dual cards but it still has to be big and bold. I think Alienware is leaving money on the table by thinking smaller and thinner is better for desktop replacements.
SlickDragon, Maxware79, Papusan and 3 others like this. -
Just took a more thorough look and the X17 seems fine, only the X15 is significantly worse. The increased weight of the X17 vs M17 also signifies that the cooling has been beefed up rather than trimmed down so theres hope yet. Lack of a numpad certainly hurts but its liveable as long as the X17 is good as a whole.
Also i noticed that they mentioned that advanced optimus is listed on the X17 models as optional while being completely absent from the X15 models, so thats another strike against the X15. RIPDarkhan likes this. -
Why don't companies get smart and use daughter boards in the back of the lcd instead of having plain back housing on lcd if you want thin and light....you could get laptops super light and thin if they integrate the io in the back of a lcd. I know it would look ugly as hell but ppl want ultra thin.
So I see your the father of shunt modding laptops....3080 200w shunt mod go! Lolseanwee likes this. -

Clearly this X line are not desktop replacement machines. By comparison with Apple this looks like Alienware Air of sorts, but with an extraterrestrial twist: it's going to be more expensive than the more powerful, thicker models. While these machines have not been designed for most of us, they are too limited, there is probably a lucrarive niche market for them. For instance, an Alienware X could be a great spare laptop for oligarch kids for when they are on the go, so they will charge a premium accordingly.Last edited: Jun 2, 2021raz8020 likes this.

Now wait a minute. They were designing the X15 along side the Ryzen R5, and they decided to basically take back all the steps forward they did in the same generation? What are they waiting to see which one sells better and go with that line of thought in the future? Even if you're an Alienware fan you'd have to be insane to buy an X15. Stay clear of that thing. They even sell a better laptop, it just doesn't have a catchy name.

The thin X line has been in works the last two years for Intel chips. Only Intel was able to provide support at that time. The thicher re-designed models of the old chassis with etc Ryzen is a work they have started with lately due the newly Ryzen popularity. The future is thin. Next goal is to try beat Razer in thinnes, both for the 17 and the 15 inch model. The race has just began. And Razer should be scared.
-
Congrats on your order! Looks sweet. How did you order that particular version? Online I only see the 3080 top of the line models available.
That being said, the x17 3080 looks amazing on paper. 165w?? And a 4k screen? Yes please! Can't wait to see some benchmarks. -
That makes sense.
And with Alienware getting the UHD 120 panel Razer definitely better be scared. I say I have no true brand loyalty, but I still hate Razer with how terrible their support is. I’ve heard my fair share of horror stories with Alienware, but I’ve lived both sides and from my experience Alienware is vastly better. Atleast you can get ahold of someone.
