You think it was easy? I unlike the vast majority of the population chose to give instead of take. I spent a career serving in the defense of freedom. My service came at great cost and I sacrificed my mind, body, and soul for people who have no concept of sacrifice. I stepped up when others stepped back. That involved multiple combat deployments during my 25 years of service with America’s finest out of Fort Bragg NC. I was also wounded in combat while fighting in Iraq and wound up retiring from the Wounded Warrior program. So nothing about my life was easy. Add to that I am a single father raising a teenage son alone. I am being well compensated because of my actions so think again about calling yourself a peasant. I have seen plenty of people with less then nothing who still found happiness in spite of their circumstances. And that is why I have grown to detest most Americans. Spoiled, rotten, and entitled generation who have zero perception of what real hardship looks like.raz8020, SlickDragon, Flying Endeavor and 4 others like this.

Wait till you see what Alienware has been up to more recently.
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Alien...ested-as-a-temporary-workaround.541854.0.html
I quote: ...it looks like customers are getting Alienware laptops with gimped RTX 3070 Laptop GPUs leading to reduced performance.
User u/REAVER117 posted an issue on the Alienware subreddit that the performance observed with his m15 R5 was not on expected lines for an RTX 3070. Upon checking GPU-Z and HWiNFO, it became apparent that the RTX 3070 in the Alienware m15 R5 was reporting just 4,608 CUDA cores, 36 RT cores, and 144 tensor cores while in reality it should be showing 5,120 CUDA cores, 40 RT cores, and 160 tensor cores. This does not seem to be an isolated issue as several other Alienware owners have reported similar such mismatches in the same thread. -
Hmm. Remember when being humble was something of an aspiration for some? In my line of work when i hear people talk about how much they did and suffered when they served they ended up doing the least.
I don't think anyone needs to justify why they buy something. I'm not sure why but you are bringing up a lot of superfluous information about yourself in order to bolster your argument to justify your purchase. Whatever the reasons they are legitimate and valid. I respect anyone willing to put their money where their mouth is. Surely no body needs to denounce most of americans over a laptop thread. Turns out a laptop purchase is not the culmination of all your worldly deeds. It's just a purchase. I hope it works excellently for you. Money no object for a veteran...Wouldn't despise the people who ultimately pick up the bill though. I suppose you must be fairly high rank or special forces. I understand low rank vets, i. e. the bulk of boots on the ground, tend to experience modest living conditions to poverty in America and elsewhere, but I digress.
Hope we are wrong about your new x15, although we rarely are and the specs speak for themselves.Last edited: Jun 5, 2021 -
Has anyone seen any information directly from dell regarding the vapor chamber for the higher end models of the x17?
it’s mentioned here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Goodb...-newer-sleeker-kid-on-the-block.541589.0.html
But in a video directly from Alienware that came out today ( ) around the 4:36 mark she shows the heat sink off. It doesn’t seem to have a vapor chamber...
She also notes in the beginning of the video that it’s the highest spec version, with the 3080 and 11980hk. If there’s any version of the x17 that should have a vapor chamber, it’s the max spec version.

If I did want this notebook can't consider it. Dell flipped the motherboard again. I really hate that. Gonna be a pain to repaste. I guess since they will be using liquid metal on the CPU may not need to be repasted as much. Unless I’m missing something the MacBook overall thickness is 0.64” whereas the x17 in FHD is 0.823” and QHD/ 4K is 0.843 respectively.
Either way it’s not what I wanted to see since thinness means less cooling potential.Last edited: Jun 6, 2021 -
If you saw the pict in the post, you could see it was for the x15
Maybe next year you'll see right below 0.60" Thick for the refresh.

Yeah I definitely overlooked that.
They better refresh the A51 or at least make a 200W 3080 that can fit an A51 R2. I wouldn’t mind seeing a larger single power adapter as well.Last edited: Jun 6, 2021raz8020, Clamibot, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
A beautiful dream. +1 rep. That said, Dell already stated that R2 graphics won't be upgradeable to Ampere.
-
Yeah, people need to look more at the details. Here is a new fun one. If people want the most performance out from the cheaper SKU's as with the 3060 etc in the new x15 they have to look on the much cheaper Dell G15 gaming laptop with Ryzen 7 5800H, GeForce RTX 3060 GPU for $1225 USD
Not everyday you'll see Dell let their cheaper Dell gaming models have the highest TGP for the graphics unit

Let's just say I grew up in a Airborne Infantry unit located at Fort Bragg but didn't finish my career their. And FYI, A soldiers rank is earned not given. I never loss sight of my humble beginnings as a PVT/E1. And second. people in uniform are not given special treatment with taxes. The only time were not taxed is when were dodging bullets down range. And poverty in America? That is a matter of perspective. Allow me to quote something my brother from another mother said in Mogadishu.
When I go home people ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do you do it man? What, you some kinda war junkie?" You know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.

If you think people Like me are privileged then please go to the nearest Army recruiter and tell them you want to enlist into the 18X program. I am also quite curious about this as well. Really hoping it has one.. I am considering also getting this laptop to replace my current M17 R1, but I am aiming for the top spec model this time. Hopefully it would turn out good since DELL is pretty much among the few companies who actually honors their International Warranty in my country.
Thank you so much for your service sir. I may not be an American citizen, but I appreciate your sacrifices. -
Thanks for the amazing support on this thread. I appreciate it more then words can convey. So getting the train back on the track, building PC's and the occasional game helps to focus my energy. Especially now that I'm retired. When my X15 arrives I'll be sure to add 3dmark and push it as much as it will let me. I have spent very little time on this forum because I never considered laptops/notebooks as practical gaming devices so this will be a new experience for me. My primary forum which I've been a member for years has been overclock.com. I've had thousands of postings their on the Caselabs and Aquaero threads. For me, that is the real fun. Designing and building water cooled systems able to push boundaries. I know their has been a lot of negative comments about these new X series laptops but it's by far faster then any laptop I've ever purchased. And considering the money I've spent building desktops these X series laptops don't even come close. And just so were clear, I'm not rich. I just know how to handle my finances and San Antonio is 14% lower then the national average for cost of living. The mortgage form my 2900sf house is $920 a month. And I am tax exempt for income and property taxes because of my VA rating. I earned my BA while I was in the Army so Uncle Sam paid for me education free and clear. One last thing. Dell, Lenovo, and I think Asus gives military discounts for retirees if you buy from them direct. I know you won't get that if you buy it from places like Best Buy. The Discount usually offsets the tax. Another great things about buying direct is the coupons. Dell is good about that.

TFS, interesting stuff, and of course a respectable career for sure. I suspect your enthusiasm about the X15 is entirely explained by your self-declared lack of experience with gaming laptops. You have to take a look at the history of devolution of these devices over the last decade to see where people are coming from. Pretty much everyone here hates thin and light, since it invariably involves a compromise on performance. Take a look at the "How Dell cripples performance" thread. Bro @Papusan has the link handy I'm sure. What's worse, unlike with previous generations, with Ampere there is no way to match desktop performance on a laptop due to TGP limitations of mobile graphics chips (and the fact that the X15 uses low tier TGP chip variants adds insult to the injury).
The point is: if you are after pure performance and expect good I/O options and basic upgradeability, you will likely be disappointed to some extent (and thus might want to reconsider); if you are aware of and happy with all the compromises then fine, but do take out a warranty spanning the expected timeframe of use as QA may vary.Last edited: Jun 7, 2021SlickDragon, Clamibot, Gumwars and 5 others like this. -
10 year USAF vet here, EOD was my calling so I feel you brother.
This is an excellent forum for figuring out the what's-what with portable PCs. The list of extremely well-informed members here is far too large to try and list. The big point that's been conveyed here is that AW has gone downhill, rather rapidly, in an attempt to stay relevant in the laptop segment. Thin and light along with powerful tend not to mix well, even as we're seeing the fruits of the sub 14nm manufacturing nodes hit the markets. In one of your earlier posts you said you wanted upgradeability paths and you felt the X15 provided that. Well, these are soldered socket (BGA) CPU/GPU systems, with the X15 even having the RAM glued to the MB. Storage and WiFi appear to be the only components that you can tinker with. Historically, AW laptops since Coffee Lake run HOT. Like pushing Intel thermal limit hot, by design. Couple that with inverted MBs, repasting their laptops have gone from somewhat complex (15/17 R1 thru R4/5) to super easy (M15/17 R1) on to exceedingly difficult (the most recent offerings). Undervolting is a must. Repasting is very likely and with this element 31 crap, which sounds great on paper but a deeper dive looks to be a nightmare in getting off the CPU/GPU die, is further proof that Dell is making disposable $3K laptops.
I was initially excited about this laptop but now not so much. My M17R1 is still getting it done, still has access to the AGA, and I fully believe other OEMs are more vested in creating enthusiast grade products over what Dell is doing here. To each their own, but I would advise going with something else or at least hold off a bit and see what these things look like in the wild rather than being a test bed for gen 1 Dell tech.
FWIW. -
Thank you for your service, bro.

how do you know the new thermal paste is going to be a nightmare to get off the board? I’m just curious
-
I'm thinking when they have m17 r4 in refurbished I might purchase one if they have it with 3080 and 10980hk at least it has vapor chamber and number pad. Sucks no tb4 but u get tb3 and aga. Side ports too lol. White color. I just need something I can game with on the go from Dell with at least a 3080 and that's light.
-
how the hell that quad fan thing even needs a patent in the first place? I hope they fail, miserably at that too.
raz8020, SlickDragon, Vasudev and 1 other person like this. -
I believe repasting this laptop will be more challenging because of element 31, specifically because you'll need to use IPA or some other solvent to completely remove it. By using a solvent, it will cause the silicone medium the gallium is embedded in to dissolve and flow with whatever you're using to clean it up with. I believe this greatly increases the chances of shorting something out because of wayward gallium particulate, rather than just LM. I don't know how granular the gallium is in this paste. If it's large enough, it might not be too big an issue. However, if it's fine, this stuff isn't going to be easy to work with unless there's a way to pick it up without using solvents.
-
Ahh I see. Bummer! Thank’s for breaking it down for meGumwars likes this.
-
If you remove the new Galium/silicon pad to try other options/needed re-paste you haven’t other option than use Liquid metal/ask Dell to send out their outsourced inhired tech team. And what if you are outside the minimum warranty and can’t get it from Dell (they don’t usually sell parts)? A huge drawback if you are afraid of applying Liquid metal/nooby. Ordinary paste may become a disaster in this thin gaming book.

I don’t even care that it’s thin, I just wanted a 3080 that wasn’t gimped.

Nice! Keep us posted on when it arrives, its crazy that there aren’t any reviews out yet going over thermals. Usually we get reviews first, before the laptop becomes available to order.

congrats, I'm trying to decide between x17 or MSI GE76 . . . -
Get the GE76 unless you just need something super thin, Jarrod's tech has a review on it and it seems alright compared to the X17, and quite a bit cheaper:
-
but it is gimped.
there are many ways to gimp it, you coming from MSI, assuming their heatsink is decent, then it is power or current limited. with alienware, it will be heatsink and temperature gimped causing the throttle.
in both cases, the new CPU + GPU throttling mechanism will gimp it regardless, that is the issue with thin and light. -
pathfindercod Notebook Virtuoso
You think the X will not be gimped? I have yet to own an Alienware that hasn't throttled out of the box and required a lot of tuning, repaste and repad... I have a suspicion the new X will be hitting 100C and throttling or gimping the hell out of the cpu or gpu to maintain.Last edited: Jun 9, 2021raz8020, Rei Fukai, SlickDragon and 3 others like this.
