The stock 3466 memory is inferior to the 3466 memory that is sold on Dell's website. Stock is Adata CL24 and what they sell on Dell's website is Kingston CL22. Having tried both Kingston Fury 3200 CL20 and Kingston 3466 CL22 with two 16gb sticks I found the Kingston 3466 to be significantly faster. Latency is garbage for both, and I don't have a screenshot for the Kingston Fury, but I do have this.

The mobile RTX 3080 is as fast as the desktop RTX 3060ti so perhaps the mobile RTX 3080ti will be able to compete with the desktop RTX 3070. Given the power limitations for mobile GPU's I suspect the gain from 3080 to 3080ti will be marginal at best. Too much to hope for a mobile RTX 3090. I suspect the power requirements are the reason they have not created one. Living in Texas I benefit from cheap energy compared to most other places. My typical power bill for my 2900sf home is under $200 a month. So, from my perspective placing power limitations on electronics and PC components is silly. Why are they limiting power capabilities for laptops but not desktops? Because of the batteries? A desktop replacement does not need to be super thin with a smaller battery. It would be one thing if it was only Dell doing this but it's not. Is it? All the laptop makers are doing it. I can't wait until the supply chain issue is resolved and video cards resume normal cost. Once that happens, I will go back to using desktops and ditch my laptop. Just my 2 cents.Last edited: Dec 30, 2021Papusan likes this.

Hi everyone, my x17 arrived today and im loving it. One concern though...It seems a lot of applications are launching with low res textures on the 4k display. I also noticed that scaling the resolution back to 1080p fixes the problem.
Any known fixes for this so I can keep the 4k display active?

Tuned mobile RTX 3080s with 165w TGPs are as fast as stock desktop 3070s. Plenty of mobile 3080s that can break 14K Timespy GPU scores which places it at stock desktop 3070 performance. I was hitting desktop 3070 scores with the 3080 in my GE76 Raider. A mobile 3080ti with 175w will fall between a desktop 3070 and desktop 3080, which is still insane. -
From my experience, Synthetic benchmark and actually playing the game is two different thing and you also have to keep in mind that Desktop GPU are paired with Desktop CPU and Desktop Ram.
Top timespy for 3080 mobile is 14,000-14,500 Graphic score that would land exactly between the 13,500 of the 3060ti and the 15,500 of a 3070.
For Firestrike the 3080 lands exactly in the middle of a 3060ti and a 3070 desktop.
So the 3080 mobile currently sit right in the middle of a 3060ti and a 3070 desktop.
My guesses is that the 3080ti mobile will land exactly between a 3070 and a 3070ti desktop with around 16,000 timespy point. -
Don't forget memory. Fast ram with low latency has a huge impact on GPU speeds. I saw that when I upgraded my old desktop which had a core i7 6950x and dual Titan XP's in SLI from Kingston DDR 2400 CL18 to G-Skill DDR4 3200 CL14.
Properly tuned memory which is faster than any DDR5 benchmarks I've seen.Attached Files:

And still the fastest laptop GPU's remain far behind my pair of Titan XP's over 5 years ago. This was done on a 31" LG true 4K 4096x2160 120hz monitor using the same resolution for benchmarking. I also had 3 other 28" 2048x1080 monitors. 4 monitors in total connected to those TXP's when I ran this benchmark.

I get that DDR5 is new, but this is terrible if you compare it to my scores taken over 5 years ago with G-Skill DDR4 3200 CL14. When I bought my son's Alienware Aurora R13 I wanted him to have something that would last a few years, so I chose a 12th gen Core i5 CPU. Dell does not allow the R13s the option for DDR4, so knowing that they use crap stock memory I opted for 8gb of DDR5 thinking I'd upgrade upon delivery the same as I did for my X17. I failed to realize at the time that DDR5 memory is in short supply thanks to Micron losing a factory. I know this isn't an X17 related gripe, but when R2 gets released, it remains to be seen what Dell chooses for memory.
This article is from Toms Hardware and the latency is terrible. And again, for comparison is my G-skill results from 2017.

Does anyone know if repasting voids warranty or no?
Also on another note, can any owners of the 32gb 3466 XMP ram that comes with the laptop confirm if it is high or low density?Last edited: Dec 31, 2021 -

If you are in the US, repasting does not void the warranty. If you do seek warranty for damage that is caused by you and they are able to prove it, then you will be liable for the costs of repair. Note that the onus is on them to prove that you caused the damage you are seeking warranty for in order to deny coverage. -
Very dissatisfied with alienware at the moment. Got my x17 two days ago and went to turn it on yesterday and got this. It was perfect the first day. Great screen no bleed and no dead pixels. Very disappointed. I will keep you all abreast of how quickly they get me a replacement but as of now they have no ETA. It all works perfectly.plugged in to an external monitor

Has anyone else experienced an issue keeping the X17 on with the display off?
I have changed all the settings for the laptop to stay on but turn off the display both with the lid open and closed.
When the lid is open the display won't turn off, and when the lid is closed, the computer will go to sleep...frusterating. -
I finally did a windows 11 fresh install, but I notice when I go to AWCC I lose cpu advance view. I go into bios and see performance greyed out I hit f9 and I can turn it back on but with ever reboot it turns back to grey. Any ideas?
EDIT; Now it doesn’t grey out, it is enabled but still not OC option for cpu. I know I can use xtu and throttlestop but I want to know why it’s doing it. -
Anyone who repasted their x17, what did you use to clean the Element 31 off the cpu? The service manual says not to use rubbing alcohol for some reason?

I ordered my x17 ~ Dec 9th and it came in on the 30th. I specced 3466mhz XMP and it came out of the box equipped with ADATA low density CL22 16gb sticks. P/N: AO1E34RCSV1-BD7S. XMP was working and properly clocking the ram up to 3466mhz through both software or bios control.
I ran some tests with the ADATA ram and then swapped it out with a kingston hyperx CL20 32gb kit. I still am not able to get the hyperx kit to run faster than 3200mhz, despite trying, either through software nor bios. However, the HyperX kit pretty handily beat out the ADATA kit in every test despite the slower clock speeds.
My best timespy score with ADATA was into the 12,300's combined
My best timespy score with HyperX was just over 13,000 combined
I have the 11980HK i9 RTK3080 4k model, and I put 2x 1TB 980 pro's into it with a clean windows 11 install. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
just reset the BIOS to defaults then re-enter BIOS and you will see it is no longer greyed out. -
Does anyone else have this problem when connected to an external display using HDMI?
Every time my computer's display turns off, it will turn back on with full brightness dispite the actual brightness number being low.
Then when i move the brightness meter it instantly corrects itself.
When disconnected from the external monitor there is no issue. -
I seem to be having some issues with my x17 and I want to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing and if any solutions are out there. I have already tried a few things myself.
First off I have a 11980HK i9 RTX3080 4k model. I put in a 32gb kingston hyperx kit, 2x 1TB 980 pro's, and a fresh clean windows 11 install.
I did most of the driver's through window's update. I did the nvidia drivers through geforce experience. I also reinstalled awcc w/ the OC controls. I got the latest bluetooth driver and intel graphics driver from intel's site with the detect utility. Bios v 1.4. The mux is on (hybrid/optimus disabled)
I'm having an issue with putting the computer to sleep. I put the pc to sleep and it seems to always eventually crash and reboot and then stay powered on with the lid closed. I will notice that the fan is running, open the lid and log in and notice it is a fresh boot load. I have checked the event viewer and saw that it sometimes is a crash/reboot, and other time it seems it may just be waking from sleep randomly.
If anyone has any info on this issue or potential solutions I would greatly appreciate some help. -
I have a question for the ram experts.
There are two references for the Kingston Fury 32GB 3200Mhz Kits:
1) 8Gbit ram density 2Rx8 - Ref. KF432S20IB1K2/32 - dual rank 8Gbit density
https://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KF432S20IB1K2_32.pdf
2) 16Gbit ram density 1Rx8 - Ref. KF432S20IBK2/32 - single rank 16Gbit density
https://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KF432S20IBK2_32.pdf
Which of these kit is the fast one?
Many thanks!

Yeah that wasn't working. Turns out the bios was corrupt, had to roll it back.

X17 - anyone else getting their ethernet head STUCK into the computer port?!
Had to use a mini screw driver to pry it out more than once, what's up with that?
Do I need some special ethernet cord for it to fit in correctly? -
Had this issue with a Samsung plasma. It's your T-CON board for vertical lines. It's far too early for that board to fail so it's likely a lose ribbon cable connection in the screen or the motherboard. I got a crash course in repairing that plasma until I stupidly leaned it up against the wall and cracked the screen while waiting for my replacement board. Pissed me off because even though it was 1080p the picture quality was damn near OLED quality and replacing the screen cost more than a new TV. Then another time on my 65" 4K that I'm typing this on now I went into the service mode to manipulate some settings and I bricked the control board. It was still under warranty, so Samsung sent out a repairman who replaced that. 9/10 times if I can find a service manual, then I can fix nearly anything. But to be fair I use to be a systems engineer for AT&T Wireless. I've discovered that TV repair is far less forgiving than PC repair. Unlike TV's, most modern motherboards and PC components have redundancies allowing for BIOS flashbacks and unlike the 80's and 90's PC's components are far more modular. I once burnt a 1600-watt EVGA T2 power supply for using the wrong gauge wire during my learning phase for building cables, and after I put out the fire for the cable discovered no damage to the power supply because the internal circuit breaker cut it off before the current had any feedback. After that I was sold on EVGA. I would speculate that your X17 passed initial inspection but the cable for the T-CON became lose from inspection to arrival. Since you said it worked properly the first day then failed the next then perhaps it pulled lose after closing your lid.
-
Yes, and not just with ethernet cables. It's the way the back cables connect on the X17. There's a slight angle for insertion and because of that plastic clip that ethernet cables have, some are snugger than others. Especially CAT 7 and CAT8. I have a CAT8 connection because I have fiber internet but after a little break in period the cables become less difficult. Just give it some time and after a while it won't be as big an issue. I think the mini display port is a real pain because they look nearly identical for top and bottom but only connect one direction. It's really easy to screw up the cable or the connection if you try and force it. And that is why I have come to love and embrace USB C. Whoever invented micro USB connections were a real ass.
-
I have gone rounds with this issue but there are a lot of variables here. First is your external monitor. Resolution, refresh rate, and color capabilities. I'm Using a 60hz 64" Samsung that supports HDMI 2.1. I have tried HDMI, Thunderbolt & non-thunderbolt USB C. Both works as equally well as far as I can see, and mini display port. So, where to start.
1. know your external display capabilities and plan accordingly.
2. Choose the right cable that supports your external display to its fullest potential. My TV might be 60hz but in game mode it allows 120hz playback with a few adjustments in the picture settings of the TV menu. My X17 is a 120hz 4k screen.
3. I chose an 8K HDMI HDMI 2.1 cable with up to 48gbps bandwidth. It's overkill but the X17 supports it and from experience rather have greater cable bandwidth support then not enough. not all cables are created equal. I've used every brand of cable you can think of, but cable creation has worked well for me.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RNCNYTP?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1
4. If your external supports it disable HDR. Unless you're watching movies. Your Windows 11 video settings should adjust to your monitors capabilities. I can turn on/off HDR both in windows and my TV.
5. Adjust your color profile in the Nvidia display tab to your preference.
6. Calibrate your external screen for the best picture quality. I use a Datacolor Spyder5Elite.
7. If you're having issues with your screen not properly resetting to their previous condition then try reinstalling your drivers. Windows 11 was supposed to fix this issue and what you describe has never been an issue for me.
8 I have tried every cable option, and prior to HDMI 2.1 display port was king for speed and color options but with the right HDMI cable not anymore. Below are my color settings. I did have past display port issues with flickering but not with the X17.Attached Files:

My only issue now is when I close my lid my system is supposed to turn off, but instead it always restarts. I don't use hibernate or sleep mode and aside from that the PC does turn on the way it's supposed to when I open the lid. So, until the solution presents itself, I just manually shut down for now.

Not so sure the E-cores helps so much in gaming. But probably useful for the Dynamic boost feature in laptops. Reducing the power from the E-cores will let the graphics get the full power when Nvidia now pump up graphics TDP up from 165w to 175w. This to stay within same max allowed power consumption the engineers have programmed in the firmware (EC).
Edit. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-laptops-3080-ti-3070-ti/
Yep, better with Low-level framwork instead for proper (good enough) cooling and big enough power adapters that can feed the laptop with enough power.
The next generation of Max-Q technology for gaming laptops will have the ability to control the device’s CPU, GPU, and more to create a unified experience and increase the overall performance of the machine. The new generation of Max-Q technology will use features such as CPU Optimizer, Rapid Core Scaling, and Battery Boost 2.0 to improve the overall experience of using a notebook.
Nvidia announces fourth-generation Max-Q technologies for gaming and creator laptops notebookcheck.com
Nvidia says that fourth-generation Max-Q uses "artificial intelligence" to dynamically shift power between the CPU and GPU depending on the workload. It also uses new "Rapid Core Scaling" and "CPU Optimizer" technologies to ramp up specific cores to higher speeds, which should come in handy for multi-core workloads. In essence, your Nvidia GeForce graphics card will soon be able to control your CPU to a certain extent. Nice, Nvidia want to handle how your Cpu shall behave

That makes sense for sure. It is pretty crazy, it has been 5 days and no response from dell on when the replacement is going to ship. They said I would have something in 24 hours and the replacement should be 8 days. I am not confident right now that they even have inventory to replace it. I may just send it back for a refund and reorder with the 3080 ti and alder lake a month from now. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I remember the days when Alienware would be on the forum and help with these situations. Alienware getting gobbled up by Dell was a sad day! It is funny I tried to call yesterday and they told me they were too busy to take my call and when I asked for a supervisor they hung up on me.Papusan likes this.

Here's another weird choice from Dell. Why not brand the new Aw x14 as x12 or even x13? Think its due Razer's product stack including Blade 14: The Ultimate 14" Gaming Laptop.
The new Alienware x14 comes with a 12-inch Full HD display and a 144Hz refresh rate and top out at 3060@85W. And not much power headroom with an small 130W proprietary USB-C charger.
Edit.

Alienware showcases Concept Polaris eGPU and launches new laptops
Dell launched the Alienware Graphics Amplifier a few years ago — an external GPU that could be plugged into the company’s own laptops for gaming on the go. Note that this is just a concept, and it will likely not be released as a future product in its current form.
Edit.
And for those that hoped for lights on the secondary key symbols for the refresh. No change vs first gen. Re-use is always cheaper than making something brand new.

Well I think I got a lemon after 5 months waiting for this thing.

So by the look of it the X17 R2 is 100% the same exact laptop expect for CPU/GPU Refresh and DDR5 ram.
Keyboard, ports, etc etc ... are all the same. -
At this point I'm curious if Dell is just ignoring the competition or are they really this out of touch? That x14 is a dead on arrival with those specs with the Blade 14 being a thing. So there is no reason not to have a qhd display or more powerful options.
-
Many people go by the brand name nowadays. It's called brand loyalty. How it works, not having the right specs etc does not mean much in the long run. And design will often best/beat functionality-reliability. So do not underestimate what the customers want
