Definitely not overrated. I have a 48CX for my main gaming desktop and a 65CX for everything else.

And you will never look back. My 34 ultrawide is sitting right next to my 48CX and hasn't been used in over 5 months.c69k and Juan Phoenix like this.

Anyone have a link to a country that has them up for config yet?
-
The laptop won't be available until April 20th (in the US). So we'll have to wait until then for the product page to be up.
-
Ah, it said "shipping April 20th" so I figured something would be up by now to accept preorders so they could ship in a week.
-
Based on previous laptop releases in the US (e.g. the R4), how big a delay can we expect after the 20th before the R5 appears in the UK / EU stores? I'm looking to buy an R4 or R5 before the end of May.
-
I just noticed this was an m15 R5 release only, where's the m17 R5?
-
Maybe it’s being phased out for the Area 51m R3?
-

Other way around. The 51m is most likely phased out since the cap for 3080 laptops cards is 165w and being forced by Nvidia.Terreos, etern4l and saturnotaku like this. -
I was just trying to spook them. Lol. And the Really low cap of 165w is just. . .ugh. Honestly I feel no one should be buying more than a 3070 just to prove a point.Vistar Shook likes this.

I have a 3070 M17 R4 and I swear it feels better to game on than my 3090 desktop. I think it's the small super smooth 360hz screen. It feels smoother than anything I've ever played on despite lower frames. I also had the GE76 with the 150w 3080 and my 17 r4 with the 3070 games just as good. Strange times.Terreos likes this. -
What monitor are you using with your desktop?
-
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
I have the AW3420DW and the S2721DGF -
Oh well. Sure if you compare a relatively small 360Hz display with much larger 120 and 165 (OC) Hz monitors, you will see an improvement in perceived smoothness.
-
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
Yes, coupled with the smaller screen you will also notice less motion blur or micro stutter. This goes to show that the response time of a panel can make 300fps feel choppy, while 120fps on a super low response panel can feel smoother. -

How's your battery life on the non-Optimus display? -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
It always sits on a desk and only moves from office to home desk. Never use the battery -
-
The 18th came and went and no order page.
-
Wishful thinking.
-
Any idea when Dell usually updates their pages?
-
It seems to vary. But early morning or around noon. Normally when I new product is launched the website is unstable and really hard to place an order until the next day. Atleast that’s what I experienced ordering brand new stuff from them.
-
Sounds like a good time seeing as they havent even really released info about the configs yet.
-
Kinda standard for them these it seems. There is some info on the Alienware website.
-
it's up but no option for 3070? maybe i'm blind...going back to check...still on first cup of coffeee ;0
also just the 5800h cpu not the 5900hx. So maybe we'll see the higher end option later today or maybe they will try and sell stock of the lower end 3060 option and then put up the 3070 in a week or a month.
also no QHD screen, no option besides 16gb ram, no choice for per-key rgb or cherry keys, no changing the 512gb drive etc.
Guess they are just really trying to position AMD as the "value (ie cheap) proposition" and keep it very separate from their intel offerings.
Here's hoping that they are holding off the m17r5 to be intel 11th gen and then with every option available (QHD, 3080, 32gb or more of ram, many options on HDD etc)Last edited: Apr 20, 2021 -
Looks like not even the manuals are up. Strange as they usually would be on launch day.
-
Naw this is pretty normal. They normally don’t have custom options on day one. Probably by tomorrow they’ll have another option ready to choose from. And maybe in a week or so they’ll have custom options ready. This has happened before and seems to be how they roll.andross77 likes this.

That's good to know. I have no idea how they do things but it makes sense they just get an initial page up to make sure things are functioning and then add options.
After watching some YouTube videos comparing the m15 and m17 I'm only interested in the m17 primarily because of the cooling differences. Hopefully they update that one sooner rather than later. Also eyeing the MSI GE76 for it's superior cooling. Guess we'll see what comes to market first. -
If you are considering a 3070, you probably don't want to miss this deal - Alienware m17 R4 Gaming Laptop with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics | Dell USA
^this is straight from Dell, ~$1700 for the 3070 M17 R4 depending on what you choose -

No 32 GB RAM option there, though. Wouldn't be a big deal if it were upgradable later, but it isn't.ctorange and pathfindercod like this. -
Thanks! I'm seeing $1,900 though...
edit: now i see $1,750. i think i changed the screen to the lowest option. yeah, not getting a laptop stuck at 16gb ram for the next 5 years. But thanks for deal heads-up! I'm looking to spend $2,500-$3,500 on the new m17 or msi ge76 when they show up -
No worries, I forgot Dell updates the link each time you change the configuration. My bad
-
Is there an m17 r5 coming? Or should I just order the r4 with intel?
-
i mean....it's definitely coming, but when is anyone's guess. Someone over on reddit was saying the m17 r6 (yes r6) was coming mid May. So i don't know if that means we will see an m17r5 that is AMD processor in the next 2 weeks and then in about a month we might see the 11th gen intel m17r6?
But i can't imagine the m17 won't get updated in the next 2 months. Who knows though? Damn COVID!
If you need something now, the m17r4 is a great laptop. -
Nice to have on cold days

How is the 144hz screen? That deal on the m17 is amazing. Seriously considering pulling the trigger tonight. Just want to confirm if the screen is sufficient.

Rumors are the whole R6 line is mid-may which would be the 11th gen Intel refresh. Who knows if or when a M17 R5 could show up.
-

Where did you hear these rumors? -
There was a leak a little while back that pointed to the M15 A5 Ryzen Edition as launching 5/4, while it got the A5 wrong it did get the date (global supplier) correct, it also listed the R6 as launching on 5/16 IIRC.

The service manual and specs documents are finally up on the Dell support site. I'll be adding them to the OP.
Upon looking at the setup and specifications document, the back USB C port does indeed double as a DisplayPort 1.4.
Also, it looks like the m15 R5 will eventually come with an RTX 3050 Ti (4 GB GDDR6).MogRules likes this. -
What worries me is no power delivery option is indicated for that port. I use my USB-C chargers around the house with my M3 when I am not gaming since they are smaller and work with other devices. That would be a deal breaker for me
I asked for clarification in the AMA on Discord. -
Does this mean you can run a Valve Index VR on the R5 (the Index needs a DisplayPort). I've heard mixed messages here.

This also has implications for the XPS line as now I would expect the refreshed 15-inch model to include this GPU. Glad to see it's an RTX-class card, but I am a bit disappointed by the 4 GB frame buffer. -
I'd say it's a mixture of
- the disappointing initial r5 configurations,
- lowering the tdp of the r5 3070 from the r4 3070,
- seemingly less appealing design for the r5, and
- people waiting to see what the x15/17 will be.
I think the r5 could have been exciting if they had released it earlier and with more initial configurations, but they don't seem too interested in giving priority to AMD.
I expect there will be more activity in this thread once 3070 r5's start going out.andross77 likes this. -
