Thanks! Not sure why that one isn't linked to off the 51m support page (it's more general I guess). Anyway, I think my clean install is up and running again... ; )
-
It is my understanding that the 51m comes with only 2 m.2 slots. The base 1TB drive must be a single slot option, leaving one for the 2TB evo plus, right?
-
Yes two m.2 and one 2.5" Sata.
If you are looking for diagnostics, It's better to use BIOS Pre Boot diagnostics. If you are looking for driver updates, Alienware Update Dell command update which is decent for drivers and display service tag info.
Even Dell employees admit dupport Assist can be very resource heavy and also be buggy. It can dirty a clean install lol.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 14, 2019lostclusters and Dagr like this. -
Is the base 1TB drive you recommended the 1TB (+8GB SSHD) Hybrid Drive? Is this a mechanical drive? And if so are the 2 m.2 slots still usable with that configuration?

Anyone tried fitting a 3.5" sata drive in this machine?
-
Only way would be running some type of extension for the 2.5" drive (cabling is an issue - ie finding one long enough and correct fixture to the 2.5" mount) or hook up a USB-SATA converter and use the USB ports. otherwise not much else you'll be able to do with a 3.5" drive.

It won't fit. Plus there is no real benefit of doing this with all of the drive options this laptop, and most modern laptops have.
Why would you consider even entertaining this idea. I'm just curious.
-
I'm just wondering (because I don't know).
Are the included 16 GB of RAM in Single or Dual Rank ?
Furthermore, should I add 16 more or 32 more to reach a total of 48 GB of RAM ? And should I get Dual Rank memory if so ?
I do video/VFX editing so it's not for gaming only.
Thank you -
Just wondering if I could use my desktop 4TB hard drive =P

Hello everyone,
I got my 51m yesterday. It’s awesome but I’m having a strange WiFi issue. It will just drop randomly then start reconnecting again. I reinstalled drivers like others have stated with no luck. Anyone else have this issue or can help me find a solution? Tech support basically did the exact same thing I did as I watched in frustration. -
Try uninstalling all Killer drivers and software and download and install the "drivers only" package. In the past, the extra killer software has been less than desirable, and has caused issues like you describe.
https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-drivers-installation-64bit/
Here is also a Killer uninstaller (cleaner) from Killer themselves.
I've never used it but I hear its suggested.
https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-uninstaller/ -
Already did that. I’m wondering if it’s a windows 1903 issue or maybe just a crap card?
-
Did you use the Killer uninstaller when you did that process?
Regarding Windows 1903 vs defective card, I suppose it could be either or.
The only way to rule that out or not would be to reinstall Windows with 1809 etc.
There are many variables that could cause that. I suppose if it were me I would disconnect and reconnect the wifi card at the antennas, and also reseat the card itself. -

Has anyone used dells accidental damage coverage for anything? Howe smooth was it?

Depends on the configuration you buy:
My 16BG came with 2 × 8GB sticks with Dual Channel configurations.. I'm an going to add 2 more sticks now (same ram sets) and run in a 4 × 8GB Dual channel config..
32GB from Dell comes with 2 × 16GB formation and that's dual channel too.
Don't take your total your total RAM into 48BGs with different 16GB sticks as you'll lose Dual Channel and a LOT of performance with it. Run 16 × 2; 32GB should be plenty for whatever task you do on your system.

Sounds like the issue I have. If it is, your system is using alot of the PCIe lanes and basically kicking your wifi card to the side.
I haven't found a fix for this, but I'm told purchasing an AX200 (I think) wifi card will fix the issue as it doesn't use the standard PCIe protocol.
When the wifi shuts off, do you get an error in event viewer? If so, what does it say?
@S.K can chime in, he knows more than I do about it. -
I have been using Dell systems since like 2006ish and have used the accidental damage warranty for mine a few times and for clients many times.
I've used it for mine for minor things like damaged individual parts, and once for a totaled system.
All the times the process was used was very smooth and straight forward. If its something minor they usually ask for a photo of the damage.
If the damage is more complex or more of a "totaled" type situation, now a days I imagine they would want the system in to the depot to determine the extent of the damage etc.
I cannot really think of one time I had an issue with my system or my clients system getting something fixed that was considered accidental damage.
Which wireless card is in question? Ugg.

@DeeX yea I did exactly that. I followed what killer said to do on their website. I didn’t pull my antennas off but I reseated my card.
@SacraficeMyGoat no I don’t get any errors. It just randomly kicks me off. It did it one time when I was in the control center and the card info disappeared like the card was removed but the it starts to reconnect again. It’s weird and it pisses me off. -
AX200 is still a PCIe based card. The only reliable way to fix this (at least for me) is to switch to an M.2 CNVi based card e.g., Intel 9560ngw or Intel AX201 (I haven't tested compatibility of the latter one so not saying it's compatible, but it should most likely be. I'll test mine as soon as I receive it and update here). Right now I am running a 9560ngw and it has not dropped connection in over 2 weeks (my laptop never shuts down).FXi and SacraficeMyGoat like this.

Does a M.2 CNVi based card go in the same slot?
-
Yes. The same slot is compatible with M.2 based CNVi cards as well.

I have a question
This is not first time I spotted that all of ye use Revo Uninstaller and then a CCleaner for clean the registry , mine question is is not better use just the CCleaner to uninstall it and then clean the registry instead of use Revo for uninstalling and then CCleaner for clean the registry ?
Is there a big different vs Revo uninstaller vs CCleaner uninstaller please ?
I try google it but can’t find a much different at all , is look like booth do the job great way
Thanks if anyone can confirm it or corrected me .
Regards
Scorpik -
Revo does a more detailed uninstall as compared to CCleaner. Personally, I'd not use either of them and cleanse the registry manually but I can't recommend that method to anyone.

CCleaner just uninstalls the program, just like you would normally uninstall it from the Control Panel > Programs & Features
Revo Uninstaller, Geek Uninstaller, and the likes, scan for registry and file remnants after you've uninstalled a program and gives you the option to delete those remnants.
Don't blindly clean all the remnants because sometimes especially with driver uninstallers, those kind of programs would remove files / registry entries pertaining to other drivers (ie. Alienware programs would remove a lot of anything with the name Alienware in it so you don't want to blindly clean stuff without verifying what it's removing)FXi, c69k, Fire Tiger and 1 other person like this. -

Thank you for the info. I’m a Dell reseller and it’s all I buy for my clients. Out of the last 32 years I’ve been a dell business patterned and reseller I’ve never bought accidental coverage. I was curious as it’s something I’m considering on my next machine. Also have a clumsy doctor client that I might buy it for on his new laptop.

@S.K Is this a common problem with the new 1650 killer Wi-Fi cards? What’s the best intel replacement that will insure that I won’t have this issue. I heard 9260 is good. I don’t have a modem that supports ax.
-
Thank you for the informations !
So if I add 2 more 8 GB sticks for a total of 4x8 GB (32 GB of RAM) I won't benefit from the dual channel ? -
Nice. You'll have plenty of fun with this bad boy. ;-)
A repaste and repad is genereally speaking recommended. It's actually quite simple to do, so don't be afraid to try.lostclusters likes this. -

If all four of those sticks are of the same sizes and ideally same models, you'll likely not lose the dual channel functionality.
I'll be getting my new system with 2 × 8GB sticks this week, I've another 2 × 8GB sticks with me, I'll try it out and report back.

He asked also if the Ram Dell use is in Single or Dual Rank. You can often get a bit better performance with dual rank sticks. Maybe post what it is.
I expect Dell still follow Intels memory specs outside their main flaws "Not follow Intel's specs for ram speed" (read about Flex Mode).

I've been thus far unable to update to windows 1903. Windows update gives me an error saying “0x80070003 some update files are missing or have problems will try to download the update again later”.

Do you 'need' to update? Can you maybe create a bootable USB and carry out a clean install?
EDIT: Doing the clean install option will wipe any data stored on the OS drive so backup beforehand.Vasudev likes this. -
lol. Of course doing a clean install would result in being in 1903 and so I would be “updated”. I don’t want to nuke the damn thing, what a silly suggestion!
I want to update like Microsoft intended it. Windows Update > click update > be updated.
Some folks here reported updating. Has anyone updated via Windows Update successfully?
Thanks! -

Sorry for trying to help, I didn't know what level of understanding you had on the process, so thought it would be helpful to add in that the clean install would wipe everything.
If updating isn't working then clean install was a workaround.VoodooChild, c69k, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Download the official Win 10 ISO and create a bootable USB stick with Rufus. Then you can upgrade straight through Windows with it. If you chose the exact same version you have you should be able to upgrade without loosing any files or settings.

Yeah me too, my 2x8 GB Area-51m arrives on Thursday, let me know what your results are so I decide whether I buy another 2x8 GB or straight 2x16 GB to get a final 32 GB of RAM.

My wife and I had no issue updating.
Have you tried running the windows update troubleshooter?
As someone else suggested, a clean install of 1903 may save you a ton of time and headache.
Theres so many different variables and issues that could be going on that are causing it to not update. -
Apologies if I sounded brash. I appreciate the ideas and help. I want to update before I try a clean install.

Guys, if I can get 32 GB of DDR4 at 2666 MHz for cheap price, is this worth it to take them for the Aera 51-m even though they will run at 2400 MHz " for now" ?
-
I do not ask this in an unkind way because I don't know how many folks are experts around here, but did you at least give a shot on the "troubleshoot problems" right click on the wifi? There are a lot of common network stack issues that get corrected automatically now and it's not harmful and just takes a few minutes to see if you get a fix to your disconnects.
I wouldn't force the update, unless you have some strong need to do so. When MS finds a problem for a given hardware population they sometimes block a machine until it gets resolved. Maybe try back in a week or 2 and see if it doesn't let you update then. It is probably "checking" each time you boot so eventually the update will come to you.
I feel stupid for forgetting to mention that. Yes definitely give that a go first!
Dell should add a "submit feedback" in the AWCC, so bugs can be known and maybe addressed, and other aspects of the system could be also submitted. I'm sure there would be unpleasant feedback in the mix, so many of the ideas I see here are things they could work on even in future revisions and make better products in the bargain. But we end up resorting to contacts we know because we lack a coordinated product feedback. Sorry probably an idle thought of the day, but had to say it out loud.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 16, 2019Virale likes this. -
Tried it hah! No luck. I’ll wait to see if it works eventually like suggested above.
