A question that I have not gotten an answer for.

Is the Heat Sink Module from a GTX 2070 differ from the GTX 2080 ?

Interesting! I wonder what he means by mismatches and the tool being made. And also, the vapor chamber heatsink has an extra pipe running in the opposite side of the fan nearest the CPU, where would that “fit” inside our R1’s layout? I wanna see more!

He later told me he cant speak English well and I asked him to reply in Chinese, sadly google translator doesnt well translate the meaning of his sentences.

In my understanding he wants to produce a heat sink that you dont need to reallocate screw locations.

Also, the pictures in Redit/taibo shows Vapor chamber on the CPU only, he wants it on GPU as well.

I sent him a message yesterday about the progress, lets hope he replies soon.

Regards.

You can open the case and check it yourself, I remember I selected 2400Mhz ram and I got 2600mhz.

A lot of time you getting more than what you asked for in "Custom Build Pcs/Laptops"

2060 is missing the side radiators on the heatsink, not sure whether the 2070 does.

The mounting, on the leaked vapor chamber heatsink, is different and wont fit the current 51m mounting. He was likely talking about that.

Indeed, I wont assume most users wont risk drilling the motherboard. Probably dell will keep use intel i990k for the time being and upgrade the cooling solution.

I wouldnt be surprised if they switch over Ryzen.

I’m not sure I understand. So this is just some guy who wants to improve upon the 51m cooling solution by making a custom heat sink and possibly selling it to others on eBay, taobao etc? So then, why have people been saying a heatsink “leaked”?

I guess the designers are dells and hes responsible for the manufacturing. Or he managed to get hold on a Prototype casting for Area51m R1 heatsink.

Its china, you cant hide things there.

Just "upgraded" to 1909 Service Pack for windows and for some reason the process wiped out my 2080rtx video card from my computer. I can't even install the geforce drivers because my video card isn't "seen".

Is anyone having these issues?

Device manager, system devices and find the PCI-E controller. Update it, find updates automatically and it should connect to Windows and update them allowing the RTX card to work again.

Has he mentioned the type of vapor chamber he plans on adding to cpu/gpu? Soldering vapor chambers is a tricky thing, they easily deform when above +110c.
And low temp solder doesn't carry the best thermal transfer properties. But interesting project for sure.

I don't think he is adding the vapor chambers. The vapor chambers are already present from Dell for an alternate model AW51 upcoming. He is modifying the mounting so it is compatible with the 1st gen.

At least, that's the way it sounds.

That's why all those vapor chamber based heatsink that use the pipes for transporting instead of using the VC to spread the heat still suffer from heatpipes that get oversaturated with heat so the fan cannot replace air quick enough to cool the pipes down.

The R5 used a "vapor chamber" instead the coldplate but when i destroyed my old heatsink i found out they used a regular ol coldplate not a VC making it a second false claim in a row (the first one was that it was unlocked for overclocking)

Yeah, this whole situation just...doesn’t add up. Surely there would be cease and desists floating around by now if something like this were out in the open (as it is now). These are company secrets, are they not? I mean I understand China plays by different rules to some extend but Dell is a huge international company who could easily trace the source of these “leaks” if this were actually the case.

I’m convinced this is someone’s pet project...but I hope I’m wrong and that this *does* actually indicate a refresh.

You are going to have to use Support Assist and update the system drivers. I don't remember which drivers it updated but after it updated the RTX 2080 came back in the device manager.

Is there any solution for the problem the gpu temp is fixed at 75°C in AWCC after a reststart?
I have to reinstall OC Controls everytime i restart Windows to set my OC Limit back to 78°C
I reinstalled windows already.

I tested bios 1.7.3 and 1.9.3, 180W and 200W vbios

BIOS 1.5.0 is the answer, that's the one that locks in the GPU at the lower temperature points, but if you have a newer machine you may lose Gsync support if you have it and if you care. The newer panels were not in the BIOS back in 1.5.0 so they are not recognized for Gsync support.

I know that 1.5 would increase the limit. But the main problem is I can’t set a higher Limit in the AWCC after a reboot. The scale is set from 75 to 75°C.

Only fix is to reinstall OC Controls and do the restart after the installation.
A second restart will fix the temp again at 75.
I tried it with bios 1.5 still the same problem.

Maybe a Windows(Update) problem?

I’m seeing battery drain while my 51m is off. Anyone nail down the culprit? I recall people saying it’s a service, others it’s a device, etc.

To exemplify: I shut down at 80%, return 2-3 days later and it’s at ~65%. Only my mouse stays plugged in and has LEDs so it would be lit if it were powered while the system is off. That’s the only thing and Ethernet.

Also, I always disconnect my power adapters when I shut my system down.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks folks!

That's the only option that will let the battery drain since power is sent to the USB port even if the system is off. This was a cool idea 10 years ago where you could use your laptop to charge your phone from your computer even if it's off (welcome to large batteries, fast chargers, and wireless chargers). This is a stupid feature and should not be turned on by default IMO.

I turn off my laptop every night and also turn off the power outlet whilst having a USB-C to USB hub + my Logitech G900 Mouse + Xbox controller all connected and I have 0 battery drain.

Power profile in the BIOS is set to: Primarily AC Power not the default Adaptive

Not seeing this here my AWCC latest version still allows Temp selection, 1.5.0 BIOS and latest 1909 update, I would guess your AWCC is corrupted.

Download all new AWCC components AWCC Control Center and AWCC OC Controls, Do a complete delete of all AWCC components REBOOT ,
Install Control Center first being sure to right click and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, REBOOT.
Install AWCC OC Controls being sure to right click and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, REBOOT.

After this 3rd reboot don't be surprised to see a message about AWCC downloading an update, it may not happen right away but usually does for me after an AWCC reinstall ( I've had to do it 2-3 times )

Then check out everything is functioning, if anything is STILL looking funny REBOOT again, usually AWCC will settle down after that,

@MogRules

Why are my GPU thermal limits locked at 75C and greyed out? I am on BIOS 1.3.2 and even BIOS 1.5.0 does the same thing.

I'm using the 180W VBIOS 1.0.05 if that matters (to keep the heat down)

So this seems to be happening to everyone no matter what BIOS or VBIOS, I'm on the latest BIOS and I have this too. Maybe it's a bug in the lastest version of the AWCC.

yeah I was puzzled as everyone says 1.5.0 and earlier don't have the stupid throttling but then if that's the case with the latest AWCC, then it's a m00t point downgrading the BIOS unless we don't install the AWCC?

I hope someone can confirm this

There's probably a way to bypass this with other programs or from the AWCC itself, but you should stay on the bios with better performance as this is probably a bug that will (hopefully) be corrected soon.

I would like alienware to speak about these issues on social media. I don't mind a bug every once in a while but I would like to know when there's a problem and that they are working on it.

@MogRules @etern4l @iunlock @saturnotaku

Downgrading back to AWCC v5.2.75.0 fixed it! Now I can move the slider:

So Dell is trying its best to give us crippled performance either by force upgrading through Windows update to the newer BIOS or nagging in Dell Update/SupportAssist and now through the Command Center! Great!

It wouldn't auto upgrade for me because I don't have Alienware Update AKA Dell Update or Dell SupportAssist installed
