Actually that's not true. In some games you get 4 fps or more of difference when using 2666 over 2400

That’s my main drive! Monster performance for the price... like 3300 MB/s read, 3100 MB/s write or something like that. Absolutely beast.
I put it with an Advancing Gene heatsink tho! It ran a bit hot for my taste on long writes. The stock heat sinks didn’t help much... the Advancing Gene ones work much better!Docsteel likes this. -
That’s what I have in mine it’s fast and works well in the A51m.

Do you use the stock heatsinks or something else?
-
Mine came with the Dell heatsink
( which I’m thinking of removing and selling on the black market - as they are rarer then Unicorns)

Do you have 2 of these drives in your A51m or just the one ?
I’m wondering if the heat sinks you used will fit in both the M.2 slots, ? Didn’t someone else here mention they were having trouble fitting a heatsink in the 2nd M.2 slot ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I put mine in the spot nearest to the rib cage, not the one on the side by the battery. Judging by the space I don’t think you’d have trouble fitting it in the spot on the side by the battery though. I have a 2nd heatsink sitting waiting for when I buy another NVMe drive!Lopt likes this.

I have 2 stock heat sinks that I’ll be selling too then!!!

Hi guys just wanna ask if anyone of u experience tobii stopped working? tried uninstalling but can't download the tobii experience app on microsoft store it won't download, tried installing drivers and app from dell site but after installing them it requires the tobii experience on ms store to be installed but it won't download at all. tried resetting ms store too no luck
-
Mostly valid points, but I am in no way comparing to desktops.
-
How is this possible, did you buy it from Dell and it came with it for the system?Last edited: Jan 6, 2020Fire Tiger likes this.

If you ordered your system with an M.2 or 2, M.2 drives they are provided attached to these drives from the factory.
I called to order one as my system only had one M.2 drive but they asked me to pay £35, which I thought was hilarious considering what it is.Docsteel likes this. -
Obviously there is a perceptible sharpness and quality difference and a case to be made for "retina" screens in the past 10 years, across phones, tablets and computer screens.
-
Corrrect! And where it is most perceptible is where we were all using “non-Retina” and jumped to Retina. In the end this is marketing and a screen is deemed “Retina” depending on the use case. Example: the iPhone 3GS with its low res screen at 3.5 diagonal inches, meant to be used at about 12 inches from your eyes, vs the same size screen, with 4x the pixels on the iPhone 4. It looked damn good because we were used to ****ty low res!
Same with the iPad Mini to the iPad Mini 2 with Retina display.
Will you upgrade your screen on the 51m?Last edited: Jan 6, 2020 -
Tobii is having issues with the software, it’s been unavailable to download for a while, it says on their website new version soon.
But frankly IMO your not missing anything I really tried to give Tobii a shot but it’s kind of a useless gimmick at this point in time.
More frustrating then useful.

So I'm going to be applying Phobya NanoGrease Extreme back on my gpu again as temps has risen (last applied back in July). I followed Fox's method of applying last time described above. Is this still the best technique for applying NanoGrease on gpu?DreDre and Fire Tiger like this. -
If you can detect a (beneficial) difference, then is worth having (price differences and affordability aside). This is not marketing or fashion, it is a objective and quantitative upgrade.
If you cannot detect a difference then it may indicate a lack of individual physical perception or simply a marketing fad, as you have suggested.
From my personal experience, and agreeing with Apple's now 10 year old "retina" definition, there is a *world* of difference on the 13.3" MacBook pro with retina, on the 15.6" 4K Dell XPS, and on my 17.3" AW17 with 4K.
It is incomprehensible to me how Alienware took a step back with the A51m in this, and other areas. -

I used the 'x' method on both CPU and GPU when I done my repaste. Pretty sure I put a little too much on but had watched a silly amount of videos that pretty much confirmed anything other than not enough paste was fine.
My temps seem ok, however, I may give the above application a try and see if there are any differences.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
So have played a bit of halowars 2.
CPU temps are hitting 80. The highest I have seen yet. GPU is running cool as usual.
Odd....I'm guessing its an optimization issue with the port. -
We all got taken for a ride.... Alienware "Switch" at CES: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbre...-prototype-gaming-pc-nintendo-switch-ces-2020
I am sure you'll be wishing you got that instead of that chunky AW51M... LOL.Last edited: Jan 6, 2020 -
Uh.... wait is that on the Onion ?...… I just can't …… process this.... -
Yeah I know its .... weird to say the least, but could be a good idea actually, but I hate the controls.
-
I mean I HAVE a Switch it’s great for what it is, but trying to cram a Windows PC into that form factor?
I guess if you optimize a stripped down gaming only version with no crud maybe, but still I really don’t see the point, they should be working on our BIOS and other issues not making switch clones for goodness sake.
Someone’s priorities are not straight.

Right - but we have to keep the Area 51M GPU at 78'.... wtf Dell... wtf...

Better with 88 °C ?
Force lower temps means less RMA, lower tech support and repair costs.

Cleveo/MSI/ASUS/RAZOR have already done it better and smaller with far better sound and a mechanical KB. Oh..the finish is better too!!!
Bet they make it 20 gazillion times better with R2...
I am going to spam Azor until he fixes it...

Received my nanogrease today and did my teardown. Never worked with a paste this thick before, spreading it really was a nightmare. Ended up getting it done though, probably not a perfect application but thermals seem fine so far. Few degrees less and more importantly much more stable Temps on my gpu. Before my core clock would dip into the 1800s after playing for some time, now it's staying in the 1900s. Happy with the results. Will eventually do the pads but I haven't bought them yet; when I was in there contact seemed fine. Could see imprints on all of them.

what was the technique you used to apply it? e.g. line, x, or spread it all over like peanut butter? -

I’m a old school guy and always use the trusty AMEX to put a even coat of paste across the whole heat spreader. I have always had good luck this way...

Can the A51m BIOS be modded in a similar way to what Prema does for Clevo's or is it virtually impossible on these?Last edited: Jan 7, 2020 -

Sorry I looked back about 20 or so pages and only found a vague reference to this question: I'm assuming the 9900ks isn't supported in this machine yet?
I sent my 9900k to silicon lottery to be delidded and binned. My CPU is a dog apparently: 4.8GHz with 1.275v and -2 AVX offset.
I'm mostly trying to do x264 / x265 encoding at 4.7GHz, but even with a -100mv undervolt my temps (even after delid) are horrid. Is there any way to adjust the AVX offset?Fire Tiger likes this. -

It works there are a couple of users here who have it currently in their machines. I think @Sup3rKillaX still has a KS in his but has stated the BIOS doesn't allow the full power delivery required to power the CPU to its full potential.
@Lopt might have one too from HID Evolution.Last edited: Jan 7, 2020clayton006 and Lopt like this. -

I'd imagine there will be an R2, but I doubt we'll see it this year. I could be wrong but if it was expected in the next 6 months or so I imagine they'd have thrown together some sort of prototype to showcase its potential, but then again that could reduce sales for the current revision, so who knows.Last edited: Jan 7, 2020 -
Nope. Dell locked out everything with their love for Digital cancer called Intel Bootguard - firmware security.
More about how Intel Boot Guard works here... https://firmwaresecurity.com/2015/08/12/intel-boot-guard/
I don't think so. Dell locked out almost everything in advanced settings from what I can see. Best bet is to try XTU.Mr. Fox, Fire Tiger and clayton006 like this. -
Since we see the new screw down for the DGFF GPUs, then they must be doing an R2 obviously, but it might be Q2 maybe at best or likely Q3.Fire Tiger likes this.

For those of us wondering how to overclock these beasts, i just saw linustechtips and gamersnexus's collab video about liquid cooling the area51m, it appears they ran into many issues regarding the motherboard support for overclocking and tdp issues. It appears alienware has let us use unlocked CPU's like the 9900k, but has turned around and kicked us in the nuts with a locked down motherboard.
should have expected this to happen knowing alienware, oh well... -
Yep. About 17,700 posts in this thread and a LOT of them cover this very subject.

Its quite unfortunate i will admit, but i have paid the price of jumping on the bandwagon too soon, i have since given the laptop to a family member and got a g703gxr asus with a 9980hk and 200w 2080, that laptop overclocks quite well so i think it all worked out in the end
