Does anyone know when and if Alienware will quit using 14nm+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ and start using Ryzen for their laptops?
Or start using Ryzen as well?

Don't be so sure on that. Cheaper in-prices means better ernings when they can charge the same as today
They have already jumped on AMD graphics. But Ryzen chips won't come this year.

I really do think people need to take a chill pill on all these “I want Ryzen!” Posts. Yes AMD made a good and competitive CPU. Finally I might add. But no one in the business of making money is just gonna switch to them over night. That takes time and money. Right now everyone is probably waiting to see how they sell and see if the general public wants them. If they sell well we will definitely see them make their way to higher end machines. Probably 2021 will be when we start to see more of them crop up would be my guess.

It will take time because manufacturers already have their cookie cutter motherboard design process and going with AMD would require more R&D. AMD finally has something that can best Intel in everything except single core speeds at lower wattage, but manufacturers have been burned by AMD before. Well that and Intel provides financial incentives for manufactures to use them vs AMD.
I do hope that we see more AMD options as competition is good for the customer. Intel has been stagnant for far far too long because of the lack of competition. -
My guess is people are starting to ask questions because of the advent of the new Clevo based Ryzen systems that are hitting the market. No ODM is offering a Ryzen 3950 yet, but seeing other laptop offerings with Ryzen 12 core CPUs is triggering some of these questions.
-
Could be. But these questions have been around since the G14 was announced. It’s really just another version of Apple vs Android and people want AMD to be the new Android. Even in that case it took Android years before they caught up to Apple. Now a days most of them are better. So people gotta support AMD in these early times if they want them to succeed. No money? No AMD laptops.

Truth! I give credit for Clevo to go out on a limb with the risk. If they sell, we'll see more of them... If not, then a brief blip in laptop history.

Imagine if AMD's new chips and socket last a handful of generations like AM4 did. You would actually get meaningful upgrade paths in an Alienware laptop that supports desktop CPUs, instead of going with a basically end of life socket the moment it releases with no path to a new motherboard.
I'm still baffled people (who don't know anything about Intel or sockets in general) were mad that you couldn't go from Intel 9th gen to 10th gen when Intel has always made anti-consumer decisions and abandoned previous sockets within 1-2 generations. They complained to Alienware, rather than Intel itself.
It would be cool to just have a multigenerational desktop replacement laptop that has a range of motherboard and socket types, panels, gpus etc. But that would be like making a new desktop form factor and require more than just dell to jump on board.
Oh, but DGFF is absurd and terrible, I get the complaints about that silly format and the inability to upgrade past the same line. -
Yeah that machine got my attention when it was announced. I was really rooting for it. But only a 2070. If that was before the super cards were a rumor I’d have considered it.

Intel's next socket, LGA 1700 is meant for several gen chips. Same with AMD's coming socket replacement after 4000 series cpu's. The change will come with DDR5. But then we have the move from PCIe 4.0 to 5.0. We will see how this will pan out. And Remember AMD tried do the same as Intel.... The Exciting Future of AMD Socket AM4 community.amd.com
Maybe Dell Alienware should tell the truth instead for lure people into thinking their notebooks is upgradeable? Not all out there follow the tech move.
Will their customers get easy access to the Turing refresh DGFF cards from Dell? Area-51m R1, what happened to the RTX 2080 upgrade kits? Yeah, the upgrade path stopped in both ways

I would hardly say AMD tried to do the same as Intel. AM4 lasted considerably longer than Intel sockets have in recent years, even before they responded to the backlash and announced support for beta bios support of Zen 3 on older motherboards. Intel's decision to have LGA 1700 support several generations is GREAT, but is purely due to pressure caused by AMD. If AMD wasn't putting together products at better pricepoints and being more consumer friendly, than Intel would have continued to barely change their chips and sockets, while still locking out previous generations. AMD really did have some good reasoning for abandoning old motherboards for Zen 3 and the compromise they have come up with (which should have been the move from the start, don't get me wrong) seems to be solid. At the very least, it is good to see competition and consumer outcry leading to better consumer experiences and products.
I suppose you are right about Dell's shady advertising. It seems really wild to me that someone would buy a $3000+ laptop and not understand something as basic as the socket that is inside the machine. But, Dell's marketing surely did make it seem like "LOOK IT IS LIKE A DESKTOP! SO UPGRADEABLES!" And a great point about even the same family of DGFF cards not having availability. I was really happy to have returned the Area51m. I was in the initial run when people were having their systems combust
Even then, it had slow ram and benched low for what it was. That and terrible display options. Even though I got a great deal on it, I realized how pitiful the overall system was and decided to return it.
As an aside, it is too bad Dell seems to basically not respond to consumer outcry at all, and relies on goofy twitter personalities to try and mitigate damage control. I sometimes feel legitimately bad for some of these Alienware twitter/social media reps, who have no control over the decisions made in board rooms and by engineers. Like some of these interactions are hilarious "Hey, Dell/Alienware, here is the clearly obviously bad thing about your product, why u do dis?" Reply "Cuz Alienware support upgrading sideways!" "But, that sucks and you're a bunch of liars." I'm sure the employee just wants to say "look sorry bud, your $3000+ laptop is out of the return period and you got boned. Sorry, AW bad I'm just here for the pay check". Haha
Outside of the 13 R3 I have for some gaming on the go, I now live the desktop life and will likely never return to gaming laptops. I'll just buy little OLEDs that midrange game once ever 10 years or something

AMD follow Intel more and more http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...laris-navi-gpus.799348/page-779#post-11024012
Once one of them have more to offer they will take advantage from it. We will see more competition when both have improved their tech.gthirst likes this. -
It definitely sucks that they are removing the stock coolers, but I don't know anyone who uses the stock cooler on a higher end CPU in the first place. The stock coolers end up being worth like ~$20 because they just end up on /r/hardwareswap. It is just another nickle and diming thing. AMD was friend of the people when they were losing. Now they see Intel bleed a bit and start to change course. They are a for profit business, it is to be expected but still disappointing. Brand loyalty is stupid, which is why for years I went with Intel due to performance, and now I'm AMD, but I could swap back depending on what is available at the time of upgrade.Papusan likes this.
