Serious gamers know any incremental performance increase counts. This is why Alienware now allows you to update your VBIOS for your GTX 1080 (on Alienware 17) today and get an immediate performance increase.
The new VBIOS by NVIDIA will allow your Alienware 17 equipped with the GTX 1080 card to perform with higher clock speeds (see table below).
Previous VBIOS: Base Clock Speed of 1556 and Boost Clock Speed of 1733
New VBIOS: Base Clock Speed of 1582 (a 1.7% increase) and Boost Clock Speed of 1771 (a 2.2% increase)
You can also see an increase of up to 9% in 3DMark for Windows Fire Strike Ultra 4K or 11% in 3DMark for Windows Time Spy DX12 when using an overclocking tool*.
Download GTX 1080 VBIOS
Installation Instructions:
* Achieved with Alienware 17 equipped with Intel Core i7 7820HK, 32GB of RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080. Using 3° party tools to overclock your GPU is not officially supported by Alienware.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like the vbios is basically like a small factory over clock to base clocks?
-
So when is the AW 17r4 with the 780HK and GTX 1080 available for purchase? because afaik that's not available for purchase yet . . .
Thanks! -
Just watched the video - it wants us to update to the latest system bios first.
I know a few people have said to do it due to a bug in .09 but the fan tables are really bad in the latest one
-
We will bring that up with our conference call with Dell today.

The reason that is referenced is because this vBIOS is already on the upcoming Kaby models. Dell obviously has the 7820HK models.
-
lol I guess I should be happy they are coming soon - but damn it I want one!
-
What display you want with gtx1080?
I just cancelled a order with gtx1070 WITH 4K not what I want 60hz.
I'm looking for IPS 1440p with 120hz.

Either the QHD or UHD - from the other thread it looks like the QHD might be the better?
but let's not hijack the thread - I was just asking when they will be available . . . . -
:O
-
To finish the hijack to a satisfying conclusion, it looks like they'll be available mid-march or so, but at least by the end of March, according to Frank on Twitter.
-
seems to work pretty well... easily increased my score on the first run. TDP finally > 180w. Max temps also went up by 4c. 39x, gpu oc msi, no performance fan, repaste w arctic pads...
I'm pretty sure someone will break 18k easy on 41x ++, and also break through 24k in the gpu section
-
funny why didnt this update appear on dell support & download website? regardless, im super excited and cant wait to flash the vbios myself!! thank you all those who were involved in making this happen!
-
Works nice for me!
Just a quick non-optimised run. 19k may still be possible!
Good work Dell! finally trading blows with the top MSIs!iunlock, hmscott and alexnvidia like this. -
Its on Alienware Arena because its not a urgent update like a system BIOS.
It is also only on there because since its not an urgent update and its more involved then a regular BIOS update.alexnvidia likes this. -
Very nice. Working on trying to break 200W....
19K should be easily obtainable now...

Flash at your own risk everyone. Please know what you're doing first so that you don't brick your system. This is not a official-official release so the responsibility is on you. -
Just thought I'd share...
This is on the original vbios. (Not even the new vbios) Pretty interesting peak, which is cool to see, but means nothing....
But now with the new vbios, we should be able to stretch the GTX 1080 even more....and it does....

will it ever make to official BIOS update? or it's more of a beta now?
and assuming we dont brick our system, will this vBIOS void warranty or affect future bios releases? -
Very good news. Glad TDP is finally fixed. Supposedly.

Repost from the 17R4 Lounge...and this info. definitely belongs here...

But now...
The new vbios is panning out to be pretty nice.
This is just a preliminary casual run...
Note: Graphics Score -> 24131
TDP ~180W+ and tapping into the mid 190W's....
More to come....
Just the beginning...
-
Finally broke 18K with no effort just relaxing on my desk.
The TDP stays north of 180W frequently during a 3DMark loop and peaks into the upper 190W's.
196.543W in particular for this Run at only 55C. Just crazy.
-
207W! @ only 61C. This is traditional paste by the way (Grizzly Kyronaut), not LM. Crazy good cooling system.

By the way, it may seem repetitive, but it deserves to be shared for those who have ever doubted the cooling system of the AW17R4, when all along I've been saying that it is the best cooling system I've seen in a system in ratio to both its size and form factor.

Indeed. As a reminder, even IF the AW17R4 doesn't score 1 for 1 to the GT73VR, with the MSI having a MXM card gives it a huge advantage so the bottom line is, with the AW hitting 24500's in graphic score; in ratio as a bga machine it has already won.Pete Light likes this.

Will there also be a New vind for the 15 r3 1070 version? Because the 1070 is almost always to its power limit with a small overclock.

AW17R4 - GTX 1080
Time Spy: 7020
Broke past the 7K barrier. Things are just getting started....
-
Not likely, but the good news is that the GTX 1070 is a fantastic card and it can be pushed pretty far for some great gains in the AW.
Here's one of my Fire Strike runs on my GTX 1070 - 17R4:
The GTX 1070 in the AW beats out some other GTX 1080's in a laptop....just saying...I won't mention any names.

Dreamonic has done so much better with his shunt modded GTX 1070.
http://voltground.com/haven/threads/16/page-2#post-537 -
LOL that's not even the best 1070 score recorded.
The highest recorded so far is ~ 23 210. <- That is, "so much better."
Plus, I'm talking about an AW here, not a MSI. -
Wow 23K ! There's even more room for improvement than i thought.
That's quite the software made market segmentation indeed !
Edit : Ah found this score :

But the guy used a GE with GTX 1080, too bad
But P870-DMG with Prema modded Bios/VBios hits 21 804.

From what I know, isn't Prema vBios out yet.

Good news!..wish they would release a 1070 bios with higher TDP, I definitely hit that well before anything else.

There are leaked ones only flashable with a programmer. Google won't help you, but Baidu will.

I upgraded mine. I did the bios first. I've only had the laptop for one day, is the backlight on power button light supposed to be on all the time? It goes on when I first power it on then goes off. I'm sure it happened after the system bios update..
-
May be too late for that but is there a way to roll back to original VBIOS ?
EDIT : Not good. With my current settings (x40 & 100000 PL in BIOS) I keep getting BSODs while benching / gaming even though I hadn't any before...
Can I roll back to 1.0.9 or lower even after VBIOS update ? Thx!Last edited: Mar 3, 2017 -
Before you do try I recommend you try to understand the reason first otherwise you may be stuck on this old BIOS our vbios forever.
Have you disabled all OC on GPU and CPU?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
The only OC I did was with the CPU via BIOS.
I disabled the CPU perf mode and I'm running stock. It won't even tolerate OC presets 1,2 or 3. When heavy loading ingame or benching : BSOD...
Any way to get and reflash the original VBIOS ?Last edited: Mar 3, 2017 -
after installing vbios computer freezes during games, and the temperature is above 90 degrees.
(I replaced the thermal paste on liquid metal and the temperature was not higher than 60-70 degrees with old VBIOS...)
This VBIOS killing my R4...
Help pls...Last edited: Mar 3, 2017 -
Same here, temps are up and freezes and crashes. Yay !

Something's not sticking properly with the latest SBIOS and VBIOS when the CPU is OCed. Kept hitting power limit no matter what was done in Bios. Made it work by costumizing clocks in Bios and manually adjusting Power limit in XTU.
I'm not sure why the latest system bios was even needed for the new VBIOS. My temperatures went up a lot as well. Rolled back to 1.08 and 1.02 and it is now running back to almost normal but just a little higher because of the higher gpu tdp. It's good to see that this 1080 beast is finally unleashed and I'm already seeing the difference.IXVIXXII likes this. -
That's what I did too.
Rolled back first to 1.0.2. Saw a big drop in fps so I went for 1.0.8 and so far so good, everything is holding together, temps are back to normal too.
I'm at 4.0GHz (4x40) and PL set at 92000.SUADE8880 likes this. -
After the VBIOS update on my AW 17 R4 with GTX 1080 (BIOS 1.0.12), my battery is draining while playing games. I had a minor +150 Core/Memory OC on my GPU, but I noticed even after removing it that my battery is draining, albeit very very slowly. What's up? Is this a 1.0.12 BIOS issue?
-
I don't think it's 1.0.12 related. It happens to me too no matter what BIOS I am on : 1.0.2, 1.0.8 or 1.0.12... I'm usually missing 4%. Happens mostly when playing, don't know why
-
Something kill the battery in the new models @iunlock Battery does drain to 95% several times a day
More of the same Battery draining Yeah, AW's hired firmware employees again playing with HYBRID BATTERY BOOST FUNCTIONALITY!! -
Hey Papusan. I noticed that the users facing this issue usually have the 220 W power supply and AW with 1070. In my case this is happening with a AW 1080 with 330 W power supply. Also, I noticed this only happens when the battery isn't already fully charged. If it's at 100%, battery doesn't drain. If it's anywhere lower than that, it slowly drains away.
