So, Windows Update advertised the 1803 update to me today. I started it and got the following error:
So, that's not an app, it's a hardware feature. Clicking the "Uninstall" button (which didn't seem like a very good idea) just updates the dialog to the following:
Maybe the solution is to uninstall drivers, upgrade, then reinstall? Has anyone tried already?
Edit: related post on tenforums.com

Same here. wondering what would happen if I click uninstall and continue.
Update: Clicked next and the wizard couldn't uninstall it for me. Asking for manual uninstall before proceeding. -
Joining the thread in hopes that someone figures this out .

Same problem with pretty much everyone trying to update on Reddit. We have not found any solutions as of yet.
I removed all display drivers and got the same result. -
same problem here..maybe with a clean installation..
-
So Microsoft F'ed up big time then. Nice
-
very strange

Screw that it was a real pain to get my 960 PRO Series 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 SSD to work with this computer let along get Win10 working .

I have an Alienware 17 R4 and it seems to be updating, currently have rebooted and it’s Working on updates now so I got passed the Windows Updates Hybrid Laptop app issue.
In order to do I had to do the following
Install the Windows Upgrade assistant and download the update. Close the windows when it fails.
Disable the Alienware auto-update software
DO NOT USE the Native Windows Update since this will download the driver software again.
Uninstall Nvidia Graphics Drivers and disabled the Nvidia card in device manager (it will appear as Microsoft Basic Device
Reboot and uninstall the remainder of the Nvidia software.
Uninstall the Intel Graphics Driver
Double check that the laptop hasn’t reinstalled the software (as mine did a few times.
This bit is the tricky part (in order to prevent windows from reinstalling the offending software I placed the laptop in airport mode
Run the Upgrade assistant it will say downloading software, bring out of airport mode and allow to go to 100%. Once it does put back into airport mode and let the update proceeed.
You’ll know if this has worked because the system will say Windows Update will restart.
Restart the laptop and if all is well the system will finally commence the upgrade.
Once it gets back to the desktop then re-enable the NVidia card and reinstall the GeForce Experience and Driver software appropriately, as well as the Intel DriverMogRules likes this. -
Just logged into Windows and the update has worked

Can confirm this worked for me as well. Nice find!
Hope you don't mind, I posted your steps to the /r/Alienware reddit as well to help get the info out. I presume MS will have a fix for this sooner rather then later but until then at least we have these steps

just do it! but without unistalling anything nor deactivating the gpu...for me (A15R3) worked mediacreationtool1803 : update this pc , than preserve files and app.well done

Delete windows boot manager in your boot order list in bios. After that reset your bios. It should create a new windows boot manager entry.
-
Oh use media creation tool to upgrade and you won’t need to uninstall anything?Vasudev likes this.
-
Just a caveat for others -
The media creation kit method you recommended was a huge waste of time and bandwidth for me. I ran it and it came up with exactly the same error message as the normal update method on my 13r3 - wanted me to uninstall my "Hybrid PC with GPU connected to display". -
I followed the longer instructions up above on uninstalling graphics drivers, airplane mode....etc and it worked for me on my Alienware 13 r3
-
Thanks again, this worked for me on Alienware 13 r3
-
Yeah unfortunately it didn’t work for me either *shrug*.
I will clean install as per my normal process with every major update though, no point changing it up now. Seems the other workaround is working though for those upgrading their existing installs, best of luck everyone.

This did not work for me.
For what it is worth... Spent 45 minutes on remote desktop support with Microsoft. They hit a dead end. I shared this post and they are going to call back tomorrow with Level 2 Support. They will try again or we will remove the drivers and try that. -
Chris, thanks for posting this-I am having the same problem and no one seems to know the answer. Dell brushed me off then told me I had to pay, Microsoft says it's a Dell issue and have to pay Microsoft. My laptop is only 4 months old. I'm not technical but I will try and follow these steps. Thanks again.
-
Is this update important? I don't feel like taking the effort to do these workarounds to get it working.
-
I finally have a working upgrade. Compared to the steps provided, I shaved them down, doing the bare minimum to get up and running. This is just a shortening of the points provided by MogRules at https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/8g1cu6/windows_10_april_2018_update/
I undertook these steps:
* 0. Ran Windows 10 Update Assistant, so that it downloads all it needs (it will fail here)
* 1. Download DDU, boot into safe mode
* 2. Clean both Intel and Nvidia drivers
* 3. Turn off wifi when getting out of Safe Mode.
* 4. Boot into Windows, run the Update assistant again.
* 5. It shouldnt need any more files to download, but in any case, setup going above 49% usually will mean this error was solved. My setup went smooth without turning wifi back on
* 6. Install latest intel HD and Nvidia Geforce drivers.

for me mediacreation tool worked fine .. i updated four laptop with no problems and with all of them the update assistant fails.
-
with my 4 differents laptop it works fine.

update assistant with airplane mode after downloading the installation file worked for me on 17r4, never touched the drivers
-
Best and optimal solution. Sadly, I forgot to turn on flight mode and it downloaded drivers and removed it manually.TJCacher likes this.

I did the media creation tool and that worked. First I tried it with drivers installed, no-go. I then cleaned all Graphics drivers with DDU in Safe Mode and then reran the media creation tool. I switched to Airplane mode after the download was complete to play it safe.
Something that occurs to me, based on the wording of the error message, did Microsoft break this just for laptops that can have external graphics (not sure how they would even identify that frankly? With AGA unplugged it is just an unused PCIe x4 slot, same for TB3 solutions) or will every owner of an Optimus or Enduro laptop have this pain - which is a HUGE number of users. -
This worked for me as well. You can't do it via Windows Update in Airplane mode. It still fails, but Update Assistant or Media Creation Tool install should do it, as long as you are offline during the update.
Also, I found this yesterday https://windowsreport.com/windows-10-april-update-alienware-install-issues/ Advice is to wait on the update and not try to bypass the warning until MS issues a fix. Problems with coming back from sleep on mixed graphics systems.Vasudev and UjinKuzmenko like this. -
From Microsoft on Reddit -
"We are aware of an incompatibility issue affecting hybrid laptops with discrete GPU connected to display that may cause some devices to display a black screen after resuming from battery saver mode. To provide the best experience for users, we are currently blocking affected devices from installing the Windows April 2018 Update until this issue is resolved. We expect to release an update addressing the issue in the coming weeks and ask you to be patient. We do not recommend attempting to work around the current block to install the April Update as it is an unsupported scenario that may cause further issues. Affected devices include:
• Dell Alienware 13 R3 • Dell Alienware 15 R3 • Dell Alienware 15 R4 • Dell Alienware 17 R4 • Dell Alienware 17 R5"
cf: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...d38-b5b9-d5ea0c16e975?tm=1525314302049&auth=1
Microsoft is currently blocking these models from installing the update due to a known incompatibility that may cause these devices to display a black screen after resuming from battery saver mode. For this reason, we do not recommend attempting to work around the current block to install the April 2018 Update. Microsoft is currently working on a solution that will be provided in a future Windows Update, after which these devices will be able to install the April 2018 Update.
If you are receiving this message, you do not need to take any action at this time. There are no apps that need to be uninstalled. Windows Update will notify you when the April 2018 Update is ready for your device. -

So I guess the takeaway is if you DID get it to install, don't use Battery Saver Mode for the time being?

I confirm that for Alienware 17 R2 - I7-4980HQ - Intel IRIS 5200 - NVIDIA GTX 980M :
Intel Iris 5200, pilot version: 20.19.15.4835 (10-16-2017)
NVIDIA GTX 980M, pilot version: 23.21.13.8912 (5-7-2018)
auto update of windows 10 1803 is successful

Mine is Alienware 15R3 7700HQ GTX1070.
Windows 10, version 1803 is failing to update for several days now.
Do I have to do something about it or I just have to wait?

@Vasudev im on 1803 Build 17134.81 on my alienware 15 r2, i just tried all the latest drivers from alienware 15 r4, like the chipset driver, management engine driver, thermal platform, OSD etc etc, except touchpad and RST everything works fine, which version of RST do u use for preload, also my RST ROM is still the same 15.5.0.2875 which came with the latest bios..
-
Nothing works on RS4 when Dell says 15 r2 and above are supported. OSD, Touchpad, Fn keys etc... Random stutters as well when recording, coding, gaming and web browsing.VICKYGAMEBOY likes this.

i feel microsoft is messing up with power profiles.. man i wish there was OS like windows 7.. no extra bloats.. my new 1803 build fresh installed with all stock dell drivers.. i have 128 process running, without any adobe cloud softwares installed, where i had 60-80 process on windows 7.. today i installed samsung nvme driver 3.0 from samsung site, the SSD disapearing on reboot issue is still there when running on AHCI mode, i rolled back to microsoft standard NVME controler driver. and today i played farcry 5 for one hour on CPU performance mode, seems with stock paste im yet to break 65c on GPU and 82c on CPU, this is my last heatsink / motherboard from DELL.. as my warranty is expired.. i need a LCD screen, im not able to get SPA1 or SPB1 anywhere, if u find any link pass me, also i need to buy 5mm thermal pads for SSD..Vasudev likes this.

Process count doesn't mean anything on modern OS. On my Linux build with few IDEs and compilers there are 300 process and they consume only 800MB RAM and most of them are sleeping or suspended.
I have 155 processes on my PC and most of them are suspended. You must install hidden power profile for win 10 and some OS service tweaks as well. Nv GFE is one reason for lags.
I'm totally clueless about monitors and why do you need 5mm thermal pads?VICKYGAMEBOY likes this. -
lay on top of NVME ssd.. current SSD burns like lava if im exporting a video or copying gigs of videos.. it throttles within 3minutes.. and there is no way i can update the PM951 firmware, 3mm thermal pad on top and bottom should reduce temps, previously i had them.. and i just got reply from laptop screen.com they have LG WF4 SPU1, which is really good glossy, 330nits, 76% SRGB.. only negative 35m response vs 25ms on currrent one, also total cost including shipping comes around 6.5K INR, its a new grade A+.. so no dead pixels, no bleed etc.. if i buy it on ebay, seller can give me any alternative ones which comes around 4K including shipping but 20-30days.. Yes ur right about the process most of them are suspended.. i stopped using GFE.. just once in a while to upload new game FPS test i use..Vasudev likes this.

You could buy 960/970 pro/evo SSD. 330 nits is very good and my 220 nits screen looks dim under sunlight.
this is my panel http://www.panelook.com/LP156WF6-SPM1_LG Display_15.6_LCM_parameter_27144.html -
lol yes i know our SPM1 crappy screen, just wanted to get rid of this KFKVO crap dell packs.. 960EVO SSD hmm.. ill have to wait for next month salary lol, out of budget this month, the new ones comes with a HS on top of controller i guess, so which build ur currently on ?? and hows ur temps ??Vasudev likes this.

any AG panel with high brightness?
-
Yes the Same WF4 SPU1 comes with another option of matte with 330nits.. 76% SRGB.. thats what the laptopscreen.com support guy told me, he gave me panellook link as well, so im sure they will send what they mentioned.. i found AUO HANO4.2.. good COLOR gamut + brightness +120HZ, but i cant find it anywhere online..Vasudev likes this.
