I'm mostly interested in people's bags for monster laptops... 17"+
People that travel or carry their beastly machines around a lot.
I typically am carrying lot more than just a computer, so the case is important to me.
These are remarks from other threads... partly what spurred me to start this thread.
Kind of a tight fit for the m17x r3, but that is probably the biggest 17in there is anyways. I tested out a 17in inspiron, and it fit very easily. Unique zipper placement makes it very secure (hence the name). I would highly recommend it.
Thanks for the great responses so far !
Taking the time (as you all have) to include a link will be appreciated by many.
Nice to see a non-backpack in the mix too.
I didn't order my SLAPPA yet... I was pretty much decided but after seeing some of your bags, I may end up changing my mind.
Many of the threads I saw, people only remarked on what they think 'may' or 'may not' be good... unless you sift through a lot of threads you don't get to see what others are actually using. As short as this list is.. its pretty diverse already.
I use a Targus XL for my m18x and college books. You pretty much have slim pickings if you want a backpack for a bulky 17". The Targus XL was the cheapest at $55 for me. If money isn't a factor of course, you can go bananas on backpacks over $100.
I have a
Targus citygear laptop bag, Loads of pockets, Even a side one for a water bottle, Pocket on the back zip pocket on the lid, And the front has a double zip to access the front which can store, Mp3 player Cd/Dvd's and double pockets and a business card holder.
Its definitely a cool bag and good ground between a messenger and an even more pricey pro photographer pack or something... gotta use
and say nice avatar lol.
Later on I think I'll still get the Slappy I mentioned earlier....but I can't go bagless day to day with a 17.3" !!! (So I settled for a purse.)
That said... so far this is a good case. Yeah I got a deal, but my power brick and my laptop fit along with my oversized wallet, a few portable drives and junk and my must carry papers tucked in with my Dell.
I am was a little shocked to see how little trouble I have fitting this laptop into bags... my 17" Asus is ha;f the machine but too big for it.
I use The North Face Overhaul 40. It has an extremely large compartment for your laptop, and has a lot of space for whatever else you want to throw in there. I also use the BUILT 17"+ sleeve when I put it in the bag. It might be a bit overkill, but it protects it.
In this picture I've stuffed old 17" Fujitsu-Siemens Xa1526 into the HAL for comparison. Old bag has 15.4" in.

I use a Orion M18x backpack for my M17x, it's huge, fits all my papers and stuff along with the laptop.
It's also checkpoint friendly, which can also be helpful when you look for a lost USB key in there or other small things.
I personally prefer backpacks over messenger bags as the weight is almost equally distributed to your shoulders resulting in almost no back pain at all
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a messenger bag that fits a 16" laptop? I travel a lot and i'm afraid that a backpack will be considered as a carry on for some picky Airlines but they don't usually regard a laptop carry case or messenger bag as a carry on.
I have two cases. My primary one is some 15.6" case made by a company called Verge (not sure what model; it has no tags and I received it as a gift). The edges and corners are stiff and it looks pretty professional looking, so I like it. Also has a metal zipper and plenty of pockets to store my stuff in.
My older case is some el-cheapo Targus 15.6" messager bag. Thin foam padding, plastic zipper, nothing special.
Personally, I like Slappa, even though I wouldn't mind little more extra space. I use the Spider (see review in my sig) and didn't have trouble in few of my travels so far. There isn't that much legroom (or at all) if you plan to keep in below the seat in front of you. On the other hand, there's barely any room to begin with.
I've already posted about my messenger bags. For backpack use, I have a black LL Bean Deluxe that has seen its better days (it's definitely worn). Considering that before, I use to have to buy a new bookbag every school year because I'd break it from "normal use", I'm pretty happy that the Deluxe has been with me for three years. I also have some Eastsport bag older than that, which is still useable should I need more than one bag.
