My laptop was getting a mobo replacement and after it came back, it turned out that the sound was messed up. It came back on Friday and I didn't notice the problem until after business hours (it's quite strange, the problem) so I was feeling down on Saturday and I ordered these:

They are speakers. You control the volume by wigging the tail. I first noticed them half a year ago, but I've resisted buying them until now. Well, my laptop's gone back to the repair shop, and the speakers are on their way, but I'm wondering now: are these things better or worse than the laptop's internal speakers? All I've been able to find about their capabilities is that "The pigs deliver an impressive 1.6 watts per speaker of good quality sound performance". How bad is that?

My general impression is that powered, external speakers are always better than the internal ones in your notebook.

To compare these speakers, keep in mind that your average 30$ (2.1) speaker pair has about 2.5 W/speaker and a 2-3" driver. I am not sure how the odd speaker design would affect sound quality.

2.5 eh... Well I didn't overpay that much then, since they would've been under $30 if it wasn't for darn international shipping. Glad to hear it's not like 5 watt which would mean they are not usable. My internal speakers are in front (south of the keyboard) and while they don't sound bad, I don't like to have my palmrests vibrate while I type. So it's either music or typing. Problem solved - check - now I can multitask!! :D

1.6w is not a lot, but it should be a bit better than built-in speakers. I wouldn't pay more than $25 for these all in, but hey, if you like the piggies then why not? :)

Besides power does not equal quality. ;)

P.S. my headphones (see sig) have 1w 50mm (2in) drivers that manage to deliver awesome sound quality, but then again, they are "a bit" more than $30.

1.6 will be fine i'm sure. especially if they come out the snouts of two cute pink piggies... the bigger speaker cones themselves will make for better sound. do a review lol

Could always paint them after you buy them. I personally am an audiophile, so I don't think I could handle using cheap speakers. I'd rather just buy a nice pair of head phones for twice the price of those speakers and have them sound better then most sound systems.(But I also love the feel of bass.)

and what does the audiophile recommend for external speakers?

I bought the altec lansing fx6021 and the jbl encounter. i also have a sonic t-amp with some high-efficiency bookshelf speakers. i recently went retro with an old marantz 1090 amp which adds a retro look to one of my setups. I am, as always, looking for something sounding better.

    *laugh*

I'd never want to be caught dead with those two pig speakers but I have to admit that they look cute!

Your external speakers are likely to sound better than your notebook's speakers unless some really poor worksmanship went into them.

    Have fun with them!

I can only suggest one thing...change your boot up sound to an OINK.

I consider myself an audiophile. I have heard many speakers and headphones, and nothing compares to Bose. I have Bose TriPort headphones and Bose Companion desktop speakers, which I HIGHLY recommend both of them. You'll find that they are more expensive than "competing" models, but take it from me, you won't regret going with Bose as long as you are confident in setting down that much money.

Bose does realllly good high notes, but as for bass, they aren't exactly the best(at least thats how it was in years past, I haven't tried any of their stuff for a while)

the "Bose" system in my friend's Mazda 6 sucks. the stock system in his 03 Accord was better. So not all Bose labeled stuff rocks.

What headphones do you use? I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD 595 that are really good for just about everything :) . What things can you do to improve the sound output in a notebook?

Hellmans: I'd advise you to NOT visit Head-Fi ;)

I personally just use Sennheiser PX100's But I like them because they are virtuously weightless. I know there are nicer sounding ones(Don't get me wrong these headsphones sound AMAZING). They are under $50 too, so overall you get great phones for a small price.
