I have a bet with my best buddy. He insisted that he needs notebook bag that is waterproof at depth of 100 meters (328 ft). In my mind, who will be so unlucky to drop their notebook bag to water with 100 meters (328 ft) depth?

well you actually cant go 100m under water with that bag.
30m you can walk outside with it in the rain
50m can take a shower with it but no soap
100 can take a shower with it with soap
150 m you can snorkel or light diving
200 m you can dive with it and it will be shock proof

The notebook bag your friend would get would be quite hefty if it was waterproof at a depth of 100 meters.

Do they even sell something like that? If so it's probably not a true backpack style but just a large card case.

mmm... It's not easy to make a 100m waterproof bag. I'm not sure if you can even make a soft bag that will withstand the pressure and not let the water in. And if, as aryding said, it's a large hard case then it would be a nightmare to carry it around or do anything with it for that matter.

I have seen 100ft water resistant bags for digital cameras (so you can take pictures underwater). They were made out of clear plastic with hefty zippers. I guess there can be one like that for a laptop, but 30m is quite far from 100m. And by the way, I don't agree with tuurtje97's earlier post.

I actually do very generally agree with tuurtje97, in that whoever's manufacturing this bag would probably not intend for it to be taken 100m under water, but instead would want you to be able to take it out in the rain and not worry. I mean, honestly... what could possibly be the point of taking it that far under water? Maybe if it fell off a boat? Do you do a lot of boating Bull133?

Oh, and does this fabled bag actually exist, or is it totally an exercise in imagination?

No, as I regularly travel at a depth of 150-200m with my laptop, this bag would not be sufficient. :p

In my line of work i often find myself needing something like this. I cannot tell you how many times I have found myself trying to escape a situation and finding the water the best solution. Keeping secret documents dry is big concern of mine. So i can definitely see how this could come in handy. It a real pain in the ass being an international spy.

one thing these bags are missing is a self-inflating lifejacket/air balloon OR scuba tanks. How the heck are you supposed to surface or even breathe at 100m w/o some helium :p

Saying a bag (or watch) is waterproof at 100m points to static waterpressure. Per example, if you jump in the water with a 10m waterproof watch, it's dead because the force with which you hit the water adds to the pressure of the water.

So, 100m also points to the resistance to heavy rain, a water jet etc as pointed out above. A better measure to see what such a bag can handle would be the international IP standards because no one would jump in the water with a bag, but plenty of people would like to know if a bag can handle drizzle, full rain, a water jet, temporary immersion or permanent immersion.

If by 100m you mean it could take a heavy rain shower/water drenching from above. I've already got one :p It's the Chrome Ivan and almost every pocket is rubber lined. the main compartment is a rubber bag itself that you roll up much like a lunch bag. Now I'm looking for a good sleeve...

If your friend is truly thinking about tossing his laptop into the ocean from time to time, a bag really isn't going to cut it. Best bet would be a watertight laptop case from Pelican or OtterBox - I doubt they'll do 100m, but they'll do much better than the most water-resistant backpack.
