I start law school on the 28th (no reason to rush into these things, right?), and I'm looking for a messenger bag that I can use to safely carry my 12" Dell Latitude X1 and what will probably amount to quite a few books. My only other requirement really is that it's predominantly or entirely black (for purely aesthetic reasons).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks. :)

id say get a messenger bag you like, then get a laptop sleeve. this allows for more options bag wise as well as laptop protection wise. Also, i've found that laptop messengers tend to be smaller and have less space because they need to fit the laptop. Even if you do end up getting a laptop specific messenger bag, i would still recommend a sleeve for the extra protection.

i'm sure plenty of people can give you their opinion on which bags are better and what not so i'll just leave my two cents and be done with it. tombihn, timbuk2, chrome (you either hate it or love it, it seems), sf waterfield and booq bags. there's also the targus, kensington, mobile edge, ogio, victorinox, jansport, etc. I personally prefer the first list because the bags tend to be better both in features and appearance though pricier.

There's also a sticky with a bunch of manufacturers, links to reviews, and so forth. www.ebags.com has a pretty good selection and it's a nice place to start.

I agree that it's good to get a regular messenger bag and pair it with a laptop sleeve. When I got my 13.3" W7J, I had a hard time finding small messenger bags though. I thought it was kind of pointless to get a small laptop and stick it in a large messenger (unless you've got lots of other stuff you need to carry, which I don't).

So, here are a few smaller messenger bags I found:

-- STM has small sizes available in some of theirs
-- Manhattan Portage has smaller sizes in their messenger and shoulder bag
-- Timbuk2's small messenger ended up working very well for my 13.3" laptop
-- Tumi has small sizes available for some of their messengers
-- Puma's Laptop Bag looks fairly compact
-- Sumdex has a couple of smaller messengers available
