I am looking to get a new laptop and I want to go with a 4k monitor. I work on a 15 inch laptop all day long and it bugs my eyes that i can see the pixels so I want higher resolution than the 1920-1080 I have now.

The question comes up when I read about scaling issues for some software. Why don't people just set the monitor resolution at a lower scale (in Windows Control panel) when using those software? Then switch to higher when watching a movie. Is there some reason this would not work?

If I got a 4k monitor but kept it only at 1920-by-1080 for most of the time, would those problems with scaling even matter?

You are correct. That would work.

But it is a pain in the rear to switch resolution every time you run a particular program. That is why people don't do it

Thanks! I know it would be a pain, but in my case I would leave the monitor on 4k most of the time and only have to switch the display resolution to the lower value for 1 software that is from 2010. I have asked others who run this software if it works well on their 4k monitors and they claim the icons are blurry with even 150% I just want to make sure I could set the display to the lower resolution for that particular software and it would look like it does on my current monitor.
