Is 1680 x 1050 possible with a card that does 1600 x 1200 output?
I'm trying to buy a monitor for my notebook but I don't want to buy just a 19" screen.

It is POSSIBLE, but not likely.

My understanding is that external monitor output resolution (and possibly even color depth, but all this is card/driver-dependent anyway) is (or can be, again, depending...) independent of the internal LCD resolution. So, the internal LCD can remain at, say, 1600x1200, and the external monitor output can be... well, whatever you wish (within limits).
Specs for your laptop and/or video card can (must) include maximum supported external resolution. See if you can find this. Chances are it will be something higher than 1600x1200 which would constitute proof that this resolution can be independent of the internal one.
But like I said, all this is model/driver dependent. What is your graphics card and laptop model? -
Yes, it is possible. I had the same problem, and my solution was a good VGA cable with 14 pins instead of 15 pins.
My video card is Intel 945GM. YMMV.
1680 x 1050 output possible?
