I'm in the market for a (external) monitor. In an ideal world, I'd like it to have these specs:

    • 16x10 aspect ratio. Although I've found out at work that 16:9's aren't the end of the world when they're sufficiently large, I find myself wishing for more vertical pixels at times and quite rarely more horizontal ones. Dual 4x3's would also be an option, though I suspect those have gone the way of the dodo.
    • Matté. This is the only one of these that is a hard requirement.
    • Has both VGA and some newer-fangled input technology, and supports 1920x1200 with VGA. I know some "full 1080p" TVs don't support 1920x1080 or higher over VGA, and that would defeat half the purpose since my laptop only has VGA and S-Video ports, and S-Video ain't reaching 1920x1200 .

I'm looking in the range of 22-27 inch screens. As for quality, a screen that meets the above specs but is rubbish is obviously not worth it. Higher quality is desirable but I'm not looking to drop a grand, either. IPS and other non-Twisted-Nemantic options are a general plus but I've been using TN for years now so TN is an option as long as it's good quality TN. Screen-door effect is a considerable negative, I've grown accustomed to nice matté screens. For reference, I found the ThinkPad T410 to have a rather poor quality screen due to screen door effect when I looked at it in 2010; the Samsung LTN154X3* screen in my Dell by comparison is much better by comparison and I'm happy with its quality.

Some degree of adjustability (on the desk) is also nice so I have a good viewing angle. But I don't need anything fancy in that regards.

So, any good screens out there by these standards? Or did they stop making them all when the 16:9 craze hit?

No, I don't expect you to know this screen, but if so all the better.

Dell U2410 meets all your requirements. I have 3 of them, they are IPS panels as well so they are much higher quality than the cheaper TN based panels.

Thanks for the suggestion! It definitely seems to meet the bill. Going to have to consider the price a bit, but I might well go with this. I'm glad there is a monitor that meets all my preferred specs, I wasn't sure there would be.

Other nominations are also still welcome.

Another option to consider (although, perhaps wasted if you are only going to use analog VGA input) is the Asus PA246Q. Its a 24" wide-gamut IPS display. Native resolution is 1920 x 1200. It offers sRGB, AdobeRGB and native 'Standard' modes (plus some silly ones like Landscape and Theatre). It ships with an individual test certificate for the sRGB and AdobeRGB mods.

I own two of them, bought from Amazon.
