    Hello,
I just got my new laptop and now I need a new backpack to carry it around in. I'm in college so it needs to do a lot! It needs to be able to hold a 17" laptop,(hopefully in a padded seperate area then books so it doesnt get banged up too much) power cord & ac adaptor. Mouse, and maybe 2-3 textbooks, a couple spiral notebooks, and pens and pencils and other little school stuff.

I know it seems like alot, but hopfully someone knows a good one? I tried googleing but there were too many choices! Plus hard to tell from the pictures how much it will actually hold and what the inside compartments are like.

Hopefully someone here can help me!

You need to try some on for size. My advice would be to....

    1. Look for a backpack with laptop compartment that has a top load pouch with closed sides and a tongue on top that will velcro the compartment shut. The compartment should also be separate from the main compartment if possible. This is safer since heavily loaded bags are more prone to zipper failure. The last thing you want is to have your lappy drop out of the bag if your bag ever opens up.

    2. Try the bag on & get a bag with the best seaming/sewing at the top of the straps & the bag since this is the point on the bag that will take the most abuse.

    3. Buy a bag with the widest straps with best foam padding in the strap. If you are carrying as much as I think you will your shoulders will thank you.

    4. Get a backpack with a waist strap if possible to help distribute weight. Unfortunately less expensive bags will seldom have this feature.

    5. Get something with a good pad against your back otherwise you'll feel everything & it won't be the best protection for your lappy either.

I like the Mobile Edge SecurePack.

    http://www.mobileedge.com/mens-laptop-bags/laptop-backpacks/securepack-black.html

I have a Sager 5793 and I carry that thing all over the place when I travel.. I'm able to fit my laptop, power brick, mouse, 6 outlet power strip, headphones, 5-6 CD cases, and random stuff like paper and pens. The total weight is probably around 15-18 pounds and it feels very light and balanced when walking around. Very sturdy too. Big thing I like about it is that no one can access any zippers or pockets while you have it on but its also very easy to open up when its off. Great for when you're walking around crowded areas or through airports.

I use the Slappa Matrix. Make sure you get the v2 though, as this model fixed some of the weaknesses of the v1.

Also, that O neil Drift looks pretty awesome.

the targus city gear backpack is nice for a 17 inch too. I have to agree with crimson these things have enough room for a week trip and then some for your laptop
