A lot of laptops actually suck in more air than the blow out for their cooling needs. So a cooler might actually take away air from your port and rob your lappy from air. You'll have to research how your laptop cools itself and decide if you could use one.

My laptop saw no improvement from a cooler, even when gaming all the temps were largely the same. I ended up giving it to someone else, since it wasn't worth the fan noise for me. I still do keep my laptop tilted at an angle when its on the desk though, because that actually does seem to help without added noise.

For the M17 yes if you are going to use it for gaming since it sucks air and the really hot parts are in the back (dont have it yet but many have reported it) the NZXT ACC-NT-CRYO-B Aluminum Notebook Cooler 120MM is a pretty sweet one, it blows air and has 3 fans positioned in the back, a bit expensive and it does tilt your laptop but that thing eats heat.

I believe that the Zalman NC2000 can also be used for 17" notebooks. Not sure if you can get it for under 50$ though.
